I'm living at John Knox Village. We haven't been able to get out or do anything because of the virus. It is going to start opening up next month. I've been here since the first of the year, but we could go out with our mask on, and I was able to go swimming. They have two pools: one inside and one outside. It's a pretty nice place. We're going to discuss Hemmingway next month in a literary group, which I like. I could order food, and they give me a certain amount of money each month for food. I just have a one-room with a bathroom and a kitchen. When I first came here years ago, I had a bedroom, but they also have one-rooms, two-bedrooms, and little cottages. I haven't had a lot of interaction with the staff because we're kind of locked down, but everybody's really nice. It's a little expensive. I can afford it right now, but I can only live here a couple of years, then I'll have to go to a cheaper place, but they're well worth whatever I'm paying. They keep raising the rent every year quite a bit.

John Knox Village was a nice place, and there were lots of activities going on. They were just priced way too high for us. They had a swimming pool, an ice cream parlor, pool tables, and all kinds of things to do. They also had a good working staff. They're perfect for my husband who's on a walker now as it's really hard for him to get about, but I don't want to pay that much money for something that is not really any better than where we are. We went there during this pandemic and they took our temperature and all that. We talked about money first, and the staff who accommodated us told us how much. We've been there several times after that because we're thinking maybe they're going to bring down the price, but they didn't. Their food was wonderful. It's all really good, I guess, for a cafeteria style of dining, but now they're already taking the food to the apartments or the houses.

My mom lives in John Knox Village. It's a nice place. She has a one-bedroom duplex and a screened in porch. I think it's a little expensive, but she's OK with it. They have everything from studios to houses. They have indoor and outdoor pools. It's a giant community. I don't know all the ins or outs, but I know they have seven restaurants. They can have food delivered. I haven't really dealt with the staff because she's independent living, so I haven't really had to deal with them that much. She does her own laundry, but she has some maid that comes clean. They just add it to her monthly services. I personally think it's too expensive, but that's just my preference.

We chose John Knox Village for my father because it was close to me, and because of all their amenities. There'a lot I can't say right now. They've been in lockdown pretty much since they moved in, so they're not able to use a lot of the stuff that they have. All the staff there is excellent, as well as the people that give the tours. They're very knowledgeable, they're very helpful, they answer all your questions. I was really impressed, plus the food is amazing. It's very, very clean, very clean.

Be careful at John Knox if you want “out” during the first year. We recently visited John Knox considering a house or villa. One of our concerns was having flexibility if we did not like living in a retirement community. Some CCRC’s in the Kansas City area have a policy that you get 100% of the entrance fee back if you move out within 6 months. Not John Knox. Their policy is that if you move out during the first year you get 85% of the entrance fee back. But, that 85% does not apply to the second person fee or the garage fee—you get none of that back. John Knox has many different plans: the four basic are (1) 0-50—you get 0 back if you continue to live there and a 50% reduction in higher need fees, such as assisted living, etc.; (2) 50-50; (3) 80-50 and (4) 80-20. The figures for one specific option—a house of 1,090 sq. ft.—are: 0-50 Entrance fee = $215,851 Amount John Knox keeps = $71,180 % kept = 33.0% 50-50 Entrance fee = $300,954 Amount John Knox keeps = $83,945 % kept = 27.9% 80-50 Entrance fee = $386,053 Amount John Knox keeps = $96,710 % kept = 25.1% 80-20 Entrance fee = $310,098 Amount John Knox keeps = $75,584 % kept = 24.4% While I have not run figures on other options at John Knox, we decided this was very steep—we would lose 25% to 33% of the entrance fee if we moved out of John Knox within the first year. Beware!

I’m moving to John Knox Village Care Center. They have two indoor swimming pools, a two-lane bowling alley, a health club, movie theater, and seven restaurants all on campus. They have built a lot of houses now, and they have a golf course. I’m in a studio with a good-sized living area. I have a balcony I could go out and sit on. They have bowling, classes, and a website, so you can find out what’s going on. The food is very good.

The nursing care is terrible. They socialize more often than they work and don't treat patients with care. They are not skilled enough to recognize serious issues and are slow to respond to patients. The therapy is good but it's not worth going there for the care received.

John Knox Village is wonderful. Our room is very comfortable. We have a one-bedroom, and it's just what we need. The food is very good. They have a pool and a nine-hole golf course. They do trips near and far and go to the theaters. They have a movie theater on the property and good restaurants with good food. The reason we decided on this place is because everybody who's here whether they are employees or residents is happy. It's a continuing care community. Once you're here, you're here. They don't kick you out. It's a very comfortable place to live and everybody is very helpful. They care about both their employees and their residents. It's a really good place to live for seniors.

My mother moved into John Knox Village. They are skilled, and I would give it the highest rating. The staff is fine. They have seven different restaurants and a lot of activities. It's a like a resort. There's lots to do there so you don't have to leave, like a golf course, a bowling alley, and a fishing lake.

We looked at the one-bedroom apartments at John Knox Village and they seemed to be fairly spacious. They have two windows, one in the bedroom and one in the living area, a big bathroom, and the closet was an average size. They have so many activities thay you can't even name them all. There's something going on morning, noon, and night, and what I really like is they have exercise classes, which I think is important to my mom. It's very good. If mom picks this place, I would be happy. The people were very friendly. It's an older facility, but it's very clean and nice, and they're doing some remodeling.

John Knox Village was a huge place with several hundred acres. It had different levels of care. We toured one of their newer, not quite finished yet, multi-level apartment buildings for independent living. It had a large number of apartments in it. They had a wide range of activities and a lot of nearby establishments of all kinds, which made it probably the most flexible of any place we've been in to find what you want to find. The apartments were relatively large, very open, and very nicely done. The staff member was probably the most superior person who we met at any place we visited. He has followed up a number of times trying to see if there's anything more we need to know. They took us to lunch there, and it was excellent. We enjoyed the program that was in session where they talked about the other companies that they're affiliated with to assist in moves, like selling their home, moving your goods, helping you with layout, what you could take to an apartment, and where to put it. We looked at the library, which was remarkably extensive for a facility like that. They had a salon that the women often use and a workout room that had people doing exercises in it; the equipment was all new and fairly extensive, and the room was large enough to accommodate quite a few people, probably 20 to 25 people at a time. Also, they had a computer area that seemed very useful. There were separate desks and computers scattered around the facility at various spots that people can stop at and use. There were a lot of people in the dining room when we had lunch there. Probably 200 or 300 people were dining at the same time we ate. It's clearly outstanding.

Pros: there are lots of activities for the residents to participate in if they wish to do so. Cons: Very Poor Management. High turnover in staff. Longer termed staff is overworked and underpaid. Management doesn't respond to concerns from family in a timely manner. Some concerns are often never resolved. Most nurses/aids are great with the residents, some are not. JKV seems to be shorthanded often and resident care suffers such as regular toileting for residents is overlooked or unmanageable with limited staff. I was once told by an aide, when I asked why my mom hadn't been taken to the bathroom, that she was responsible for 18 residents and that she just hadn't made it to my moms room yet but she was trying and she was very sorry. Maintenance concerns within resident rooms are ignored and/or not fixed in a timely manner. There are some very good nurses & aids that work very hard and just seem exhausted. The place looks nice, but before you choose this care center for your loved one, talk to some resident families that have lived there for awhile. You will see there are major management issues.

John Knox Village was wonderful and has a great staff. Our only problem was the pricing. The rooms were nice, they were good-sized, and everything that you needed was there. Everything was clean and good, like moving into a new home. I was happy with it. I saw the seniors eating and it looked like everyone was enjoying the food.

Dad is in John Knox Village. It looked like there's a lot of help, nurses, and assistance. He's in a room, with a bathroom, sink, and a window. It's too far away from me, but closer to my siblings. I'm impressed with the service so far, but they're expensive.

Mother had been at John Knox Village in independent living since August of 2008, but as her health went down, she ended up in assisted living. They go from independent living all the way to skilled nursing care. I think it’s one of the best that we have in the general Kansas City area. It’s almost like a community and has a pavilion which can hold as many as 2,000 to maybe 5,000 people. It’s huge. There are three or four restaurants on the campus. There’s also a touring company that you can make arrangements with who can take a group of people out to different types of activities. It is convenient right off 470 Interstate. On campus or off campus, they will provide you with transportation to your doctor’s visit or to the hospital. They have ambulance services and their own maintenance services. They provide you with weekly housekeeping as part of your monthly service fee, which, I think, is reasonable. You can get meals, too. It has a lot of planned activities. I recommend it highly.

John Knox Village is awesome. They have five restaurants, a fitness center, a pool, a library, a grocery store, their own hospital community, a bowling alley, and a beauty salon, and a bank is connected to it as well. The staff is excellent. They provide all kinds of stuff like the coffee shop and the fitness center, and all that is free. They have different activities going on throughout the day. It is just an awesome place.

John Knox Village was clean, nice, and had everything that you needed. They had all kinds of workout rooms, activities, restaurants, transportation services, and trips. Their menu and food were very good and had lots of options. I was pleased with that. Everybody was great and nice.

Initially when I walked in, I really liked it. It was pretty. I liked the variety of living quarters that they have. It would fit a lot of different needs like maybe if they wanted a little cottage type apartment or your standard apartment living or an actual house. There were lots of different things like that. So they had more choices available but it is very expensive. The staff people were very nice. There was a lot that I liked about it but what I did not like was that it smelled like urine in the hallways. I realize that if you’re in an assisted living thing there is probably going to be accidents and things like that, but I think there is a proper cleaning procedure that you do. I do not think it should smell like urine even though you maybe prone to have those problems. There were lots of things going on; it was very active. What I liked was the beauty salon and hairdresser place was right inside the building, so you did not have to walk outside to walk to it. Everything that you would need was right inside the building. It even had a little grocery store that you could shop at right there.

I visited John Knox, and it seemed OK, but it did not have a great reputation for responding to calls, so I decided not to stay there. It seemed like any other nursing home. They had lots of activities. It didn’t seem different from any other place. They seemed to have like regular hospital rooms.

John Knox Village was very clean, but Mom thought it was dreary because there was a lot of the color brown around. The staff was nice. They had updated the other areas of John Knox, but they had not updated the assisted living area.

John Knox Village had all the amenities, full continuum of care, and lots of activities. The rooms were nice. They had a snack place with a small sink, small refrigerator, room for microwave, and a coffee pot, and the bathrooms varied in size. The rooms were clean and nice but small. The residents seemed content, happy, out and about, and lively.

John Knox Village was fine. The rooms were small, but I enjoyed it. There's a lot of staff which was impressive. It was clean, and they really take care of their residents, so I was pleased with it overall.

John Knox Village is nice, clean, and had a friendly staff and above average food. The studio apartments were nice. Of course it's not like being at home, but the meals are fine. The dining area was fine and more like restaurant-style dining. It was quiet, and everybody seemed content. I think they should have more activities for the residents.

If the person has the money, it would be nice to retire early at John Knox Village. They go on trips, that you pay for and if you have a doctor’s appointment, that’s all free. They have three different restaurants: a regular dining area with scheduled meals, a coffee shop, and one open 24 hours a day, so if you want a cup of coffee or a hamburger at 2:00 a.m., you just go down there and get it. They are expensive but not out of line. If you’re independent, you can go into a high-rise, multi-level building or a cottage. If you do have to go to assisted living, they have a place for that, too. What I saw of it was about like living in a town. They don’t have any retail in that community but there are quite a few activities just across the street and down across the road, like grocery stores and fast food places, which is nice because you aren’t restricted to just that area. We were looking at a double and single bedrooms with a kitchenette with a refrigerator and a sink. I don’t remember if they had a microwave or not and somehow they don’t provide any stove until you go up to the cottages where they have a stove to prepare your own meals on.

John Knox Village Care Center, was the most positive place that we've been to. They were very engaged with their residents who seemed very happy, and well-adjusted. It was very lighted, very tranquil, a lot of opportunities for different types of classes, and ways to get involved with other peers. The place where they would serve lunch wasn't just like a cafeteria. It looked very nice, and they had menus that were very thoughtful for the guests. It was very different than any of the other places we've been to. There's nothing that probably would match that. During lunchtime, you see a very animated group, all excited, all talking, and very happy. If you have somebody that you want to go somewhere where they would feel like they can still have quality life, and be with other people. This was a bit better than the others. The only negative one was the execution of promising to get us there now. All of a sudden they're saying they can't. They put us in a difficult place to not go find some place else. We actually put down a deposit. As far as the environment, it was excellent, and the cost was OK. It was a little high, but considering what they were offering, it was worth it.

I'm going to be moving to John Knox Village. My visit was very positive. Everyone was very helpful, cordial, answered all of the questions, and showed me around. I was very pleased. The dining area looked like a regular restaurant, very clean, and very neat. My apartment is very nice. There are many activities. There are two swimming pools, a bowling alley, fishing, golf, and all kinds of clubs.

my mom has alzheimer's

My mom entered John Knox's memory care III over a week ago. It is a beautiful facility, and everyone, including the other residents were so nice. Sadly, my mom walked out the front door during the day and the center never even knew it! It was in January and very cold outside. To remedy the situation they suggested we hire a full time aide (on top of all that money!) to watch her. Imagine a lock down facility letting a resident elope and then putting the problem on the patient/family's back. After my mom escaped they also sent her to the emergency room so she could be admitted to the geriatric psyche unit at a local hospital, this was to balance her medications in a 2 week hospital setting. The ER told us that she did not meet their criteria of combative, hostile, destructive, etc. She is just a normal little old lady trying to get back to her husband of 60 years and life. OK. Bad call John Knox, trying to ship out your problem. Well, she escaped again, in broad daylight, through the open front door! 2 escapes in less than a week. John Knox this time used an emergency transport to send her back to the ER, who again refused to admit her to the geri psyche unit as unsuitable. We had even cooperated fully and told them the criteria and procedure for admissions to this unit. This has been difficult, expensive and hard on my mom. John Knox desperately needs to get control of their lock down unit so that residents don't continually escape. We are working with them now and hope to see better.

Do Not Buy In

Do not buy in! My mother was very fond of the Village until she entered the Nursing Care Center. The Care Center is decent on the surface but is understaffed and her care was shortchanged. I finally had to remove her. The independent living is great and they are expanding but, if you buy in, then you cannot change your mind when it is time to enter the Care Center. There is no telling the conditions of the future. If you have special needs they cannot address, you are stuck. They will hang that Care Center % discount over your head but a discount is not a good deal if the care is inferior. Better to save that money and have a choice of where to go when that time comes. Both my mother and I were very disappointed as are other patients but they don't have an option to leave.

My stepmom was in John Knox Village for a while. Everything seemed to be just fine. They did a good job with her. There were no problems that we know of, as far as mistreatment or anything else. My father was able to have lunch or dinner with her while she was there, and he liked the food. They had quite a few activities, and she could have lunch or dinner with other people than just sitting alone in her room, which she liked.

John Knox Village really would be the most interesting to us. We thought it was very adequate, extensive in terms of services. There were variety of living possibilities, so it?s a large enough community that would provide options for community efforts and involvement in what is offered there. It?s close to where our brother lives, plus factor for that community. The staff was a very hospitable person who showed us around; we looked at an apartment, and it would be somewhat to our satisfaction. The rooms were adequate. The place was safe and secure. I know that he had a course that was there that I was very much interested in because I am a singer, so that was interesting for me.

John Knox is a very large organization. They cover everything from just apartments to assisted living to nursing home, and they are very prominent here in Lee Summit. I pick them because they have openings, they are reasonable, and they are just right down the road from where I live. It is nice that my parents are in the apartment together with a small kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and a big living room. The staff brings them their medicine. There is a nurse on staff and ENTs next door. All meals are provided, and they say the food is excellent. They have a swimming pool, a golf course, and a fishing pond. They do wood working classes and aerobics. They have all kinds of things.

John Knox Village Care Center has a wide variety of different apartments and assisted living type of things; they have apartments, homes and duplexes. It's got a pool, billiards, cards, and all that kind of stuff. The staff was professional and courteous.

John Knox Village was an old facility. It was all spread out. To take advantage of some of the things they did have, you would have to walk outside and my parents are ninety four and ninety three. I just didn't want that for them. The apartment they had showed us was a comfortable size, the carpet has been replaced and the walls had been painted, so it looked clean, but it was just an older building.

Our dad is at John Knox Village. It is very affordable. We place him in an independent living there. But he had an accident and the blow in the head increases his memory problem. So, we transition him there to the memory care. Right now, he is progressing and he is going into an assisted memory care. They have several different levels of cares there and I can transition him from different levels of care. The people there are extremely nice. They work with him and they have one-on-one with him. He is set up for physical and occupational therapy. We talk to the therapist and the staff there to work out something that works for him. All the people there seem very nice and easy to get a hold of. They call us every time there is an issue. It just works out really well. My sister and I eat there a couple of times and the food is good. They have four different restaurants that you can choose from. They can also take out food from the restaurant. Part of the package in the independent living includes $180 worth of meals per month and that is affordable as well.

My father had ongoing medical issues relating to alcohol abuse and a need for supervised care. He was extremely ill and was moved taken to a hospital in Michigan, where they didn't expect him to survive. Once his medications were adjusted, he rapidly improved and was moved into a rehabilitation facility in Michigan, but we moved him to John Knox Village in the Kansas City area in order to have him nearer to us. He also had a sore on his foot resulting from poor circulation in his legs. It had been an ongoing problem for nearly 30 years. When he finally had a shunt put into one of his veins, his circulation improved and the sore eventually healed. However, the muscles and tendons in his foot had atrophied to the point where he could only walk on his toes. Within just a few months, the therapists at John Knox had him walking almost normally for the first time in decades. Within nine months, he was able to move back out to live independently. We were very pleased with his results.

This facility was always kept clean and the staff always had a smile on their faces in greeting when we came to visit. My uncle enjoyed his stay with them because he had freedom and still was cared for when he needed it. He enjoyed having his own belongings and when we visited it felt more like home.

This was the best facility I have visited. The best because it was the cleanest and the staff was friendly. There was no nursing home smell. I could tell the staff really cared about the residents. Even the cooks and janitors knew the residents names and took the time to talk to them. The residents seemed happy. My family never had any complaints about the care our relative received. The food never looked too great, but they did change up the menu a lot. They didn't serve the same foods over and over. Everyone's personal bathrooms they had in their rooms were small. Kind of difficult to get a wheelchair up the toilet, but not impossible. They have activities for the residents everyday, including volleyball with a balloon that was fun to watch. Overall it was the cleanest, warmest, and friendliest long term care facility I have visited and as far as they go I would recommend it.

John Know Village's main location in Lee Summit, Missouri has apartments, homes an alzheimer's unit an assisted live units. Will refund deposit at resident's death. Monthly rents are high, depending on living locations. My aunt entered started in an apt.,[2002] & passed away in the Alzheimer's unit in 2006. wonderful care in the Alzheimers unit.

Staff is unfriendly, inconsistent with care, and the facility has an extremely high employee turn-over rate. Many of the residents are left alone in their room all day, only to be attended to when food is ready. When we first visited John Knox, we were told they would bring all of the residents that were able to leave their rooms to common areas for daily games like BINGO and Dominos, however my family member has lived there 5+ years and has been invited to BINGO twice. They are constantly moving the residents around, which can be very stressful, when they have to change rooms, layouts, dining tables, and roommates.
