I am a friend or relative of a resident
I am a relative and Durable Power of Attorney of a former resident of this Nursing Care Center. His experiencce, as well as my own, in this facility was of mixed feelings. The facility itself is very clean, with no lingering odors and the residents were for the most part, well dressed and groomed every day. There were times, however, when the unexpected would be seen. The food was well prepared and presented within everyone's dietary restrictions, but was often brought to the residents barely warm, with beverages tepid temperature, at best. Maintenance of the facility was acceptable as far as repairs, safety, lighting, and emergency preparedness. Staff was mostly very responsive to resident requests, with exceptions, related to staffing issues. Staffing levels were maintained at mandated levels. The quality and training of the Cert. Nursing Ass't.s was often questionable. The oversight by the nursing management was limited due to overwhelming duties, resident and family demands. Many times call lights were unaswered for long periods of time, in excess of 45 - 60 minutes. The incident rates were high, I believe due to the slow response time causing residents to attempt to get themselves up to the bathroom or other related activities of daily living. Follow up on incident reports was the resjponsibility of the Nursing Director and could be instananeous or delayed, dependent on the availability of this Administrator. Staffing was at mandated levels, but even at the highest level, direct care staff were required to care for as many as 12-15 residents each. The assignments were divided geographically by units, not level of care. Therefore on any given day, one CENA may be responsible for 75% of her residents being of a higher level of care and observation. Cooperation among the staff was inconsistent and often territorial with some of the direct care staff not willing to assist with other residents needs. Overall, it was obvious that the facility did the best it could within the rigid structure of State and Federal Mandates, Regulations and/or Laws. The Administrative staff was often "doubled" up to replace absent Nurses, but there was a spirit of "getting things done" to meet the client and family needs.
