I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad is a resident and has been for 2 years. He certainly can be impatient and rude at times. However, I would be grumpy if I was a resident there too. I’m not impressed with the staff at Sugar Creek and haven’t been the entire time he has been there. He moved there without my knowledge while I was out of state. Now he is stuck. He doesn’t want to leave bc it’s one of the only facilities left that allows smoking. Otherwise he would not be there. It’s frustrating when I come to visit and try to track down a nurse to ask questions; they are never readily available. I have to wonder the halls to find someone. When I do find a nurse, they act like they don’t know anything about my dad and to find out they would be extremely inconvenienced. Obviously this is concerning. My dad fell out of bed a few days ago. I called to check in on him today. The nurse who answered the phone said she had no idea how it happened because she wasn’t there...it was during night shift and she’s a day time nurse. She said he seemed fine, but he refused to take his meds the last few days. I’m sure he is angry at the staff bc he fell out of bed and that’s why. Anyway, the nurse wasn’t going to find out how it happened. I had to make the suggestion to check his chart to find out what happened. She said she would put me on hold while she went to The other side of the building to look it up. I was on hold for 15 minutes in total before I hung up. Disclaimer— Sugar creek is very small and takes 5 minutes max to walk around the whole building. While on hold, another nurse picked up the phone and said that the nurses were on lunch and that’s why nobody was answering. This is extremely unprofessional! So none of the nurse staff is available from noon to 1:00 everyday? I hope none of the residents have a stroke or anything life threatening during their precious lunch hour. Obviously the nurses need to have a break and eat lunch, but all of them at the same time?! Nobody seems to have a helpful or customer service mindset— the only person who actually answered my questions when I called back today was Mareen (not sure about spelling, but she has an accent). She was short with me as well and said she couldn’t tell me how he fell because I’m not his POA. Yet, they called me to tell me he fell out of bed? Seems like everyone is trying to cover something up and not disclose the full truth. I don’t trust the nurses and worry about my dads well being. I wish I had gotten the names of the other two nurses. Transparency is the best way to comfort worried family members and this place does the opposite. We can’t even go visit him bc of the corona virus lock down, so I’m stuck with the little information I was given today about the incident. The nurses seem like they don’t want to be there. Overall just disappointed with the whole situation. I’m not new to nursing homes. My dad has been in nursing homes for years now—all while I wasn’t his POA. My expectations are reasonable. This place has a lot of work to do, starting with the staff.

Sugar Creek was very nice, and the staff was friendly. The building was very old and remodeled. Most of the patients seemed to be happy and in a good mood. They had an activity coordinator and they take the residents on field trips, to the stores, or out to eat. There's plenty of things for them to do. They feed them well, and my brother is putting weight back on. The nurses and finance managers are great but the social workers not so much. My brother is there on a special arrangement with Medicaid.

I visited this facility

It's a little out of our budget. They have a support group that meets once a month. We were able to attend once, but I haven't been able to go again. But it was helpful. It was very nice, but it's very small, they only have 13 beds. They're building a much larger one. It's under construction and it should be done this fall.
