Before I moved to my present city, I lived in the Virginia suburbs outside of Washington, D.C. As my contemporaries began to age, many of them moved to assisted living facilities where they knew they'd have all the comforts of home without all of the responsibilities. One of the more popular places to move was The Virginian, a multi-story continuing care retirement community in Fairfax, which had both assisted living and nursing care services. The Virginian is a very upscale and gracious facility that appeals to those who have always led an active and involved life. When they become a resident of The Virginian, their former skills and interests are captured by the activities staff, so they know they will never be alone.Residents going into the assisted living or enhanced assisted living sections of The Virginian will have cozy and comfortable apartments that are equipped with extra-wide doorways, spacious closets, grab bars in the bathroom and extensive services that include meals, housekeeping and medication management. My friend Evelyn was able to select the color paint that she wanted for her walls, and the maintenance staff was very cooperative in adjusting the shelves in the closet so they were more lower, making the iPads more accessible.Every resident will get a full assessment prior to moving in and from that, a personalized care plan is developed. It's a very sophisticated computerized tool that is completed over the course of several weeks, and covers everything from how many times a resident is likely to use the rest room in a day, to their favorite foods. This help the staff hone in on providing very personalized assistance.Evelyn loves living at The Virginian and enjoys the food more than anything else. She gets three well-balanced meals a day and lots of opportunities for snacks and social events. She especially loves her ice cream, which residents can have any time they like. The Virginian is a stately community that treats its residents with really well. Their personalized care plan is their Bible when it comes to planning and providing care, and I think that is why it is such a successful place.
