I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My brother was in Destin Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He was getting occupational therapy and physical therapy, but it was a joke as far as I'm concerned. With regard to the staff, I talked to some good ones and some bad ones, but it was a hassle to get through to anybody, with COVID and all that. I don't recommend that facility to anybody. If anybody asked me, I would say, "Go some place else," because my brother did not get the therapy that he was in there to get, and then they would not let him go. They held on to him for the money. His daughter had to threaten to get the law and everything else before they would release him, but they finally let him out. I've never been in there because of COVID (nobody could go in), but it looked like a decent place, I suppose. He said, "Oh, they are good to me, they treat me well." He's just a really positive kind of person. He tries to make anything work, but he said, "They didn't give me enough exercise." They wouldn't let him get up and push the walker, and that's what he needed to be doing. The food was OK, but it wasn't anything to brag about. He got plenty of food, I think, as far as the quantity, but it just wasn't anything to be excited about from what he said. He's on a special diet because he has kidney disease, and he shouldn't have a lot of certain foods. He can't eat peanut butter, bananas, broccoli, dark-green vegetables, and asparagus, and they would still end up sending him that stuff. He had to just send it back or not eat it.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband was a resident from August 2020 to March 8,2021 when he passed away. I found this facility to be very professional and have a very caring staff. I want to thank them for everything they did to keep my husband comfortable.

Incredulous and unbelievable

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I have never seen more rude and haughty staff. When you call there are several excuses -if anyone will answer the phone - the nurse is too busy, no one is in that wing, you have to leave a message. They never return your call. Often, especially on the weekends, you can let the phone ring for 5 full minutes and no one will answer. I have waited10 minutes on hold only to finally get someone to pick up the phone and take a message - insisting you must say why you are calling! It is unnecessary denial of the individuals right to privacy. I have never been inside but have heard from others that claim it is rundown and not as clean as they would expect. There are no phones in the patients rooms, only a portable that everyone on the wing must share. They stand there waiting while the phone is in use - to find out what is being said, maybe? I have no idea since I normallly do not discuss state secrets with elders I normally call. And they usually talk about their pain, aches and bowel movements. I almost hate to call fearing they do not sanitize the communal phone between uses. They appear to be woefully under staffed. With COVID-19, attacking and running rampant in long term care facilities you would think the staff would understand how friends and families want what little assurance is possible for the safety of these residents. I am sure there must be at least one caring person on staff, but I have yet to talk to them. Stay away. There has to be some place where they have compassionate staff looking after those who cannot take care of themselves. It terrifies me places like these still exist and get away with not giving appropriate care, emotional support or controlling patient behavior by seriously over medicating them so they sleep all day. We have thousands of people in the streets protesting for being asked to stay home for a month!! These people who have been sequestered for much longer than 30 days without visitors and calls from the people that love them, and these facilities should be made to provide access to their residents every way possible without endangering themselves or others lives. This is not where you want a loved one to live the remainder of their life.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother was sent here after surgery for rehab. The nursing care was satisfactory but the therapists were rude, impatient and borderline abusive. One of the therapists ripped a notebook out of her hands when she was taking notes saying, "you don't need to be writing anything down. I don't want you to twist my words". She was dropped from therapy and transfered to the long-term wing. Most of the nursing staff on the long-term wing couldn't care less about their patients. I've witnessed patients yelled out or calling out for help and being ignored. I saw a patient with her call light on, which hadn't been responded to, try to get out of bed herself and fall. I had to go find a CNA to get her help. In my mother's case, she can not get out of bed on her own and has to use a bed pan. First off, they keep the bed pan on the dirty bathroom floor half the time and don't wash it between uses. When she does have to go, it can take an inexcusably long amount of time for someone to respond to her call light. I've visited her before and have seen her wait over an hour before anyone responded to the light. If she would have had a medical emergency, she would have been dead waiting on someone to show up. Sometime she can not hold it until someone shows up and wets the bed. She has told me she has sat in a wet bed for hours before some changed the sheets on numerous occasions. They are also negligent on basic hygiene. They have never brushed her teeth in the time she has been there. She can only brush them when a family member come to visit. She has also gone weeks without being given so much as a bed bath. She has developed bed sores with they haven't treated adequately and have become infected before. Recently the infection got into her bloodstream and she had to the hospital for several days. The nurse at the hospital said that she almost died from this and they waited way too long to send her to the ER. She suspected that they were trying to treat it there because it was obvious that they had been neglecting her. Although we tried to get her released to another facility, she was sent back here with explicit instructions on her wound care. They stopped following those instructions within a week. The place is infested with roaches and she's even woken up and found them crawling on her before. They will not treat for them and confiscate any cans of bug spray that we bring in to try and keep them under control. Her roommate likes to throw her own feces around the room some of it will not be cleaned up for days sometimes. The "healthy" meals they serve regularly include hamburgers, hot dogs, and fried chicken straps. The actual healthy food they serve is inedible most of the time. We've brought our concerns to those in charge, but while things sometime get better a few days after that, it always reverts. With the exception of a few truly outstanding individuals, the staff doesn't care and the administration doesn't follow up or have any standards. I'm left with no choice but to explore a negligence suit. If you are considering putting a loved one here, please look elsewhere. I have to hear her tell me that she wishes she would go ahead and die so she doesn't have to live like this anymore. I don't think a day has gone by since she went in there that she hasn't been pushed to the point of crying by someone. No one should be made to feel that way.

I am/was a resident of this facility

We were in Destin Healthcare and Rehabilitation. They totally neglected patients and neglected me. Ninety percent of the staff was horrible. The supervisor or the administrator was not good at her job. They have a dining area that I did not go in because I ate in my room, and the food was starchy every day.

Other

I know people who have worked there and they were scolded for brushing the patients teeth, they were told there wasn't time for all that not to mention a bath, just a quick sponge bath. the care and concern for the patient isn't there. The nurses and aides yelling at the patients, some of them were scared to death of the nurses. Some of the rumors you hear about nursing homes are true, review all options before you put someone here!

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I chose Destin Healthcare for my mother because she has been there before a few years back. The staff was great, and everything was fine. It was clean. She had a roommate, and the room was spacious. They were proactive and helpful. If you went to them for something, they would try to go out of their way to make it happen. I didn't try the food, and she didn't like it when she was there.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

The facilities were very nice. They had different wings for the patients and the same nurses tended to work the same wings, so we became friends with the nursing staff as we also visited my grandmother. She was well taken care of and I could tell the staff was genuinely happy to be there and to help the patients. The food was well done and healthy and tasty. We were encouraged to come eat with my grandmother and they had meals and events at holidays that were well decorated. The facilites were not only pretty, but very clean. I never saw any dirt or anything that wasn't well taken care of. And they had a beautiful courtyard that allowed us to go on walks with my grandmother when the weather was nice. And they had outdoor furniture that allowed us to sit in the sun and talk. The game room had fun, easy game that my 3 y.o. daughter could play with my grandmother together. And I really liked the security. The doors couldn't be opened from the inside without a door code. And the doors were in sight of all the nurses stations.

This Facility Has Been the Best Thing That Could Have Ever Happened to My Family!!!

My family and I decided it was time to place my beloved father in a nursing home due to the fact that we could no longer care for him at home. This was the harderst decision we have ever had to make in our lives. However, we are very lucky to find such a caring, loving, and truly life saving facility as Destin Healthcare. The staff there strive to make a difference in everyone's life that they come into contact with. My father is very well taken care of. The staff are very open, honest and friendly. This is a very home-like environment. I am also friends with the family members of other residents of this faciliy and everone couldn't be happier with their decision to come to Destin Healthcare. This is why when I read the review saying that Destin Healthcare was so awful I was completely confused. I have never experienced anything like what was decribed. Sometimes we have trouble accepting the fact that Mom or Dad are ill, not understanding why things happen the way that they do and taking it out on others. My only thought for that family is that everything is okay with them and that they find the peace of mind that they need! As for my family and my father, we couldn't be happier. I would really just like to take the opportunity to thank everyone at Destin Healthcare for taking such great care of my father. I truly believe in the staff there and the care that they provide for each and every one of their residents!

DO NOT ADMIT YOUR LOVED ONE TO THIS FACILITY

Our father is clinging to life due to the extremely poor care received at this nursing home. Specifics: he was dehydrated and not given ample fluids. He had zero body fluid when rushed to a nearby hospital today; His kidneys had shut down. His lips were cracked and he was craving liquids. He was only in the nursing home for 2.5 weeks and was never evaluated by a physician. When questioned about the fluid intake I was told by the "in charge" nurse that they are not mandated by law to place this information in the patient chart. It was kept in the patient room. I asked her how could she be sure that my father was not dehydrated and she assured me that liquids were given to him on a frequent basis. Another concern is that they do not bathe the patients on a regular basis. The hospital said they will bathe him because of his strong body odor when admitted. We could not find his clothes on a recent visit and finally they were found in a dirty pile in the bottom of the closet in his room. My sister went to the washing machine and washe d and dried them herself. He had been wearing filthy clothes as observed by several family members on a recent visit. He had mouth sores and blisters in his mouth and apparently, they never swabbed and swished his mouth on a regular basis as it had been detected that he had bacteria in his mouth. His breath gave that away! If you decide to admit your loved one to this nursing facility, I strongly suggest you have someone in the room with him at all times to observe and to make sure that they get the care they deserve. Insist that a physician evaluate your loved one within 2 weeks minimum. I would not treat a dog like this! He is in God's hands now and we can only pray he survives this horrific ordeal. I can't help but wonder how many other patients are receiving the same treatment.
