I am a friend or relative of a resident
They switched my father's medication after he had been at The Oaks for three days despite our request and the doctor's orders not to change his medications for two or three months because he was being aggressive. The first day that he arrived, there was a lot of confusion and it was chaotic. Everybody was coming in at once. They didn't they do some research as to what kind of problems he had before they bombarded him. Most of them acted like they didn't even know he had dementia and that was all in his records when he came over. Then there was this aide who came in and she was going to show him who was boss. She flipped him all over right away and then he just got really combative. The whole time he was there after that, it was like everybody was afraid of him and he did get real combative because they didn't approach him with a gentle suggestion. The worst thing was on Saturday where he'd been there for a week, he had a huge infection on his big toe. His big toe was standing straight up. It was all bloody and his feet were so swollen and I told the nurse that his feet needed to be up because they made him sit in his wheelchair all day long with his feet just dangling on. He has to have his feet elevated so they don't swell. She said they'll have to talk to the doctor about it. We asked for him to get a flu shot, he never got that. Then he fell and they took him to emergency. We went on Monday to get his belongings out of his room and there was somebody else in his room and I asked where my dad's stuff was. Those were sent to storage and they just threw his stuff in a bag and threw the bag to storage. My mom is almost 84 years old and she's been through so much and she just burst into tears. I can't believe people can be so insensitive. They did not know how to deal with dementia patients at all. They should not be accepting dementia patients when they don't have the proper training to deal with them.
