We didn't like Lutheran Home at all. It was not great. My sister was there for a few months, and she was there for rehab. The staff did not respond when called. They were constantly changing, so there was no continuity in staff. And it didn't seem like anyone knew what was going on. They need to improve on staffing. I think their staff for rehab was inadequate in terms of knowledge. My sister liked the food. I think they had amenities. The place was clean. There was a beauty salon there, but my sister didn't take advantage of any of their amenities. There was no help, and my sister would wait for an hour and a half for someone to answer the button. We complained, but it didn't improve.

My dad was in rehab at the beginning of this year. When he first arrived at this facility, he was placed in a Covid positive area because supposedly he tested positive for Covid. The room was the size of a walk in closet, filthy and extremely hot. It was so hot that his sleep apnea machine broke down. Also, my dad was on three different prescribed high blood pressure meds that made him urinate more often. He called crying one day because he sat for 2 hours in a wet pull-up. Instead of the staff changes the wet pull-up, they put 2 pull-ups on him. I called the on call doctor and complained. Never done anything to help him. Pull dad out after 2 weeks

Provider Response

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We sincerely apologize for the challenges and distress your father faced during his stay. Please know we're actively investigating the issues you raised and we're committed to making improvements to prevent similar situations. If you're open to it, we'd appreciate the opportunity to discuss your father's experience further. Please contact Dawn Sanks, Director of Nursing.

I have been shocked at the care when my good friend ended up in the rehab and then the skilled nursing facility. While there are a few kind, skilled people at the Lutheran Home skilled nursing facility and their rehab center (there always are people doing this work that have hearts and care deeply), the place is understaffed and only now that she has gotten much better is she doing okay there. Originally, she wasn't being turned and had a bad bed sore until I and another friend complained and they started putting cream on and then we would turn her when we visited until the sore started healing. When I asked the nurse about it, she said that since my friend was in hospice, the hospice would have to give directions before they turned her... (really? you have to get directions to turn someone on their side, which takes 30 second when they have a big bed sore?) One day, my friend ended up in the bathroom and the person left her there and then went home at the end of their shift - it was over 2 hours before someone else came who had come in for their shift. When they brought food, they didn't tell her where things were on her tray (she has very low vision) and they would put the desert in front and the heavier food and soup in the back and not even tell her where the silverware was. One evening, the food was "kielbasa" and "herbed carrots". Well, a little bit of ground up kielbasa was on a white hot dog bun (didn't remotely cover the break), carrots (with NO herbs at all) and all was cold upon arrival including the soup and coffee - now how nutritious and delicious is that for their hefty price? When she would push the button, it was often an hour before someone came. This was in both the rehab center and skilled nursing, where she paid $14,000 a month! In rehab at least, there were good physical therapists.

The workers were so lazy when it came to cleaning up my parent that my parent developed pressure sores. The first area my parent was so hot that his defibrillator broke. The staff lost part of his sleep apnea and refused to compensate for the loss.

I wasn't impressed with Lutheran Home. They talked a lot about money. No one ever showed me around the place. They were more concerned about whether my mom could afford to be there. That turned me off very much. I found out that a friend of my mother's was living there, and so I went to visit her after we talked. Personally, I found the place very depressing. It was clean, but the walls were painted dark brown. It was dark and dingy. Also, it was a huge place, and I actually got lost getting out of it. It took me 20 minutes just to find her. I took this stairway, took this elevator, took that hallway, and I found it very confusing (I'm sure that's just because I didn't know where I was going), but I was not impressed with the place and I don't think I could let my mother live there. I only spoke with the director and the person at the front desk. They were both very pleasant, too. I was just kind of put off by the fact that the first thing they talked about is how much money my mother had. That was very offensive to me.

Lutheran Home checked all the boxes. They have intellectually stimulating activities like book club, bible study, and other things where you can really put your brain into gear. The staff was very friendly with us on our tour. The staff was friendly with the other residents and with each other. The one-bedroom was good and newly renovated, so it was clean. It seemed appropriate for the size.

My stepfather is in rehab at Lutheran Home. It is very clean and very organized. For someone that has balance issues or you're concerned about falling, they have the right equipment to be able to manage the patient. The staff is fantastic. The social worker is so helpful. The therapists are very kind and very good. My mom said the food was pretty good. The room is very safe and very clean. It has a nice view of the neighborhood. He's in a private room, so he has a private bathroom with very helpful shower equipment to keep him safe. I do know it's very expensive because we couldn't afford for him to stay there beyond the rehab.

Our overall experience with Lutheran Home is not very good. I think mom said she liked the food; she didn't complain about it. Most of the staff members were good, but they were not exceptional. According to my mom, they would come in, do PT, and leave, and then she'd sit in her chair for the rest of the day in front of the TV. Once or twice a day, they would come in and walk with her; otherwise, she would just sit, and she was complaining about that. She'd rather sit in the common areas with other people, but they explained to me that since it's COVID they're not doing that. They didn't do laundry, and they made me pick her up to go get her second COVID shot. So they didn't even give her the COVID vaccine in there while it was free all around. She apparently missed the window. So I had to go there, take her out of there when she could barely walk, get her a vaccine, and bring her back. That was annoying. I would have had to pay for them to do her laundry. She had a suite, which was the biggest room on the floor, so her room was absolutely beautiful and huge. I saw people coming, taking their relatives, and walking with them outside in wheelchairs. I had a lot of issues with the social workers and caseworkers not calling me back, but then when they did, they would finally solve issues, so I have mixed feelings about that. Part of the building is brand new and part of it isn't.

I visited this facility

Lutheran Homes was a very unpleasant community. It was very dark, hospital like, there were not many recreational areas, and it was very institutional. I did not like it at all. It was at the bottom of my list. The dining room was just plain tables and chairs. It was very dark and claustrophobic, the halls were narrow, and the furniture was hospital-like. It wasn't very warm.

My mom lived here for a year in the memory care unit. Her private room was perfect. She was treated with kindness and care. Could not say more about the staffs Communication skills and care of my mom and attention to her daily needs. She loved going to music, exercise classes and Sunday church services. Her favorite thing was watching the daycare kids through the windows! Loved this place!

my mother received excellent care at rehab-then was transferred to nursing care-BIG difference--was there over week-end-no one came into see her-no nurses-no assistants sat her at a table all by herself-for what this place cost-there is no excuse for not making her welcome- or caring for her-think twice about bringing your loved to nursing care at Luther village!

My father went from Northwest Community Hospital into this facility for extended care. It was the worst decision we ever made. Terrible care and ultimately my dad died after going back into the hospital. My dad wasn't eating or drinking and the nursing staff did not seemed concerned. If I could even say any of the caregivers had actual nursing degrees. If you want your loved one to die a horrible death but them in here.

Lutheran Home for the Aged was very good. It was a very clean place. The location was very easy and very close. The people were nice. They treated my mother well, and they did what they needed to do -- help her rehabilitate to walk again. There are various types of rooms there depending on what the need is, but they are clean and all have individual TVs. It was a one person per room type of system, and they all had their own bathrooms. The grounds were very pretty. They just did some remodeling, and they are still working on it, but it’s awesome.

Lutheran Home was very beautiful and the people were professional and kind. The only downside about it was that he didn’t like that they were pretty strict with him having an alarm on his shirt because he wanted to get out more and be more independent, preventing him from walking around versus just sitting down or something. They were very helpful, so I didn’t have any issues with that. They kept him really active with physical and occupational therapy and took him down to the dining room when there were activities going on.

My dad stayed for respite care at Lutheran Home. They did not put him in an appropriate place, so the staff was very anxious when dealing with him. They had to call in outside help, which we had to pay for. I would not give this place a high rating. He was there for seven days.

I visited Lutheran Home. It was quite expensive, and it didn't fit with my parents needs. However, this place was very clean. It was topnotch. If I was going in, and I was younger, the Lutheran Home has a lot of good things going for it. I like it. However, the staff was a little more business-like and not as warm and open.

My father has been transfered between the hospital and the Lutheran Home several times over the past 6 months. He has received excellent care. The hospital staff has called the Lutheran Home to compliment them on the care provided as my father's health is quite complicated. While the new rehab facility is beautiful, it is the staff and the cares they provide that matter. Each and every member of his care team - the MD, the RN's, the aides, the Wound Care specialist, the therapists, the dietary aides - all provide caring and competent care.

I am/was a resident of this facility

The Lutheran Home (main buildings and retirement homes) are beautiful. Had always heard this was a wonderful place for loved ones. Very close to home for our family to have our Dad near by. He had to be admitted as an (after care) patient from a hospital stay. The staff was not overly friendly, the food was gross, and the care wasn't to great either. Our family, (my Dad included), were shocked. My Dad was in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's, not in a wheel chair either. Most of the patients were pushed in front of the nurses station and a tv or video playing in front of them. Many of them had there heads laying down on the table where they were seated. My Dad never ate in the eating area with the rest, because it was so creepy. While visiting, someone (many) patients would by yelling "help me". It was a little like one flew over the Cuckoos nest. My Dad would look down the hall and say "look at all those dead people". He did not stay long, and I have heard they were making changes (I hope).

They treat my loved one with care and respect. She is well cared for, and she is happy. The facility is very clean, the staff are wonderful. The overall facility is very nice. I wish that there was a place for family's to dine and/or visit with other residents and their family on the unit.

I thought the nurses and staff involved with caring for my grandma were very cordial and professional. The facility was also very clean and well maintained. Throughout the whole process of my grandma's Alzheimer's developing, they were extremely helpful and ensured that she was in the best of care. We had no idea what to expect and they did their best to assuage all of our fears and concerns. However, the management and security officers were very rude and unprofessional from my experiences with them through my mom having worked there and in passing on the way to my grandma's room. They acted as though they were superior to everyone and treated their staff like dogs both behind the scenes and in front of customers - very rudely and tersely. It seemed as if everything was a crises when in reality none of it was. Whether it was a fire alarm going off or a bathroom running out of toilet paper, both were handled with what seemed to be the highest level and stress possible.

I had two grandparents live at assisted living one was awful it smelled, the food was awful and she would often complain. This place was absolulty amazing it was very clean and my grandma had her own room. The room was always clean very nice and orginized, she had her own tv and bathroom. The food was great too because she gained weight while she was there unlike my other grandma who lost a lot. There was a lot of chance for her to socoalize with the other residents staying there and she made some new friends. It was a little more expensive but it was so much more worth it. The staff treated her great she would compliment them often. The grounds were also great beutiful to wheel her around and go on walks with. Overall a great place I was very impressed and greatfull that she got to spend her days in a much better place .

My father was a resident of this facility for several weeks. The staff and the amenities of Lutheran House were outstanding. His room was very nice, and was kept very clean. There was an atrium with trees and birds that was very lovely, and despite my father having soome cognitive issues, he always talked about the "pretty birds." In addition to the Atrium, there was also some very nice artwork through the facility, and my father appreciated it very much. The food was outstanding, and the residents were frequently taken on trips. My father spoke quite positively about many of the staff members, and I believe that the loveliness of the facility and the high level of care he received gave him a great deal of happiness and helped him maintain a greater level of awareness than he would have had otherwise. I, as well as other family members, appreciate the care that the staff at Lutheran Home showed to my father. In a world where nursing homes are often less than ideal, Lutheran Home stands out as being a very caring and supportive facility.
