I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Do not even consider this place, please. Animals at the shelter get better care. The building may appear good enough but it is a terrifying, filthy, scary, unforgiving place to die. If your loved one has any cognition at all, don’t look here. This is only for patients in about in hospice. No activities, no exercise, meds not administered or incorrectly, understaffed. There is not a kind or reassuring word from any administrator. Sales job of epic proportion. Too many lies to list. Feckless, cruel administration with no regard for patients. Can’t even manage laundry. Loved one in filthy sheets for three weeks and then laundry when finally taken was lost. Air on any day but Sunday when visitors come is not fit to be breathed. Severe patients left to wander all day unattended in and out of rooms, defecating and urinating on beds and furniture getting to to bed with others so unsafe and administration indicates this is normal and no big deal. They should be on no list of any kind.

I have no idea how this place is allowed to operate. Basic care is not being done. My loved one has a rash from sitting in their own mess for hours. Not enough engaging activities throughout the day. The management team is unapproachable. There is no communication and staff seems to not care one bit. Items go missing and clothes get sent to laundry to never be seen again. I feel so much guilt for forcing my loved one to endure life at Harmony.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My sister is in memory care in The Harmony Collection at Roanoke - Memory Care. They have a lot of systemic issues. She has had trouble getting her laundry done, which is supposed to be included. And if it gets done, it doesn't get back to her. We've had problems with medical care there. We've had problems with basic hygiene. Their communication is very poor. The facility looks great except for the unpleasant smells. The design and decor are good, but it's not kept clean. They are understaffed. For whatever reason, they aren't able to accomplish taking care of my sister in my sister's case. They had an activities director, but my sister didn't take part in a lot of activities. She would refuse sometimes. I saw very few activities going on, although I know they have a calendar of activities. I saw activities where nails were getting done occasionally, but other than that, I didn't witness a lot of activities going on. I have been there at mealtimes, and the food didn't look appetizing to me. The layout was good. It wasn't clean. My sister's room was not kept clean, and if you walk through the halls, you could smell odors. They need better communication. It was very hard to know and get in touch with medical staff. They have a person in charge of the building, but they weren't on site. It was hard to know who to contact when you have a concern. If you leave a message, you don't always get an answer or response. They need more staff. They couldn't keep up with laundry, they couldn't get it done. I think maybe they need better training on how to approach dementia patients. I got a lot of my sister refusing to do things, which in fairness, she does, but I didn't hear a lot of problem-solving on how to address the issue. It's like if she said she didn't want to do something, they went, 'Oh, well, that included not coming to breakfast and not coming to lunch,' so sometimes she would miss two meals a day. She lost a lot of weight there because she wasn't eating.

Awful place. The building itself looks nice until you are there after dinner and see how the staff won't clean up after residents and themselves. None of the promises we were told were kept. Mom was left in her own mess for hours at a time. Laundry was NEVER done. No one was giving her showers. Mom enjoyed spending time outside and doing activities with a few of the ladies but it doesn't seem like the nurses care to engage with the residents. There's a lot of texting and gossiping at the desk. Epically in the evenings. They will say anything to you to get the paperwork signed. Do not put your loved one in this building.

I visited this facility

I like The Harmony Collection at Roanoke - Memory Care the best. It was very nice, new and clean. Everybody was pleasant, and they were friendly. I watched the interactions between the staff and the residents, and it all looked positive to me. The common spaces were bigger than the other places I've looked at, so there were more places for the residents to gather. It's not just one room near the entrance that everybody sits in a wheelchair or sleeps. They have a library and a theater. The facility looked secure.

Provider Response

Thank you Patti. We strive to provide a caring, loving environment at our communities and we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with others.

My mother is already placed at The Harmony Collection at Roanoke - Memory Care. It has three different buildings on the same location. The staff is very responsive and very good. The manager, Margaret, is fantastic. She's a great help. She's been very helpful to us in the transition for my mother going into the facility. There was a transition issue, and my mother was very concerned, upset, and confused. All of the people there were very good at helping her in that transition. She goes to all the meals and she's very happy with them. It's very well kept and always very clean. They have the staff there always cleaning the facility. It's a beautiful facility, and they maintain it very well. It's one of the more expensive facilities in the region, but I think it's worth the money. They have a very good system for physical therapy and occupational therapy that comes into the building. They have a doctor who comes in once a week, and they have nurses as well.

Provider Response

Thank you so much Paul. We strive to provide a caring, loving environment at our communities and we appreciate your trust in caring for your mother.

My mother moved into The Harmony Collection at Roanoke - Memory Care. She seems to hate it, but that's just her, because we're happy so far. The staff seems very patient there, but with the lockdown, we haven't had a whole lot of interaction with the staff other than my sister who takes the phone call. Mom seems to like the food. They have some activities. I know she's done some crafts, and they have like a garden club. They seem to be knowledgeable about Alzheimer's, and so far she's a hard one, but they're handling her.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My in-laws are residents of the memory care and independent living of Pheasant Ridge Memory Center. The memory care so far seems excellent. It's a beautiful community and they're seemed to be staffed probably better than most of the places we've looked at. The one thing that stood out was that they have a private bathroom there. The apartment is a really nice-sized room and a big bathroom with a shower and chair. The other places we've looked at, you have to go out of your room in order to use the shower, and the rooms were small. The one here is just a very nice room. It's a big place, but there's a lot of small areas and they take the residents in smaller groups to work together. So you don't have to sit in a big area, you can find a little quiet space and they have all kinds of little spaces. There's a big town center in the middle so you really feel like you're in a little town. They have a movie theater, they have a store. And so the residents can look around the store and take stuff back to their rooms, usually old things, like old clothes, pocket books, games and things like that. They do a happy hour every Thursday evening in the store with alcohol-free beverages. They have lots of activities throughout the day. The physical therapy team helps with getting the residents seated for their meals. And they do their nails and just a lot of interaction with them. So it's also like therapy but they're doing fun things while getting their therapy. There's an art room, library, lots of little stations, there's a baby station, station for the men like a man cave, and there's a kitchen and laundry area. It's a real beautiful community with high ceilings and lots of light. They have two dining rooms with a kitchen down the middle, so they can serve on both sides. And the CNAs that sat them down helps them as needed in gauging how much they're eating. We've been very pleased so far. The way they keep their residents active and in different areas, not just corralling them and sitting them down like a baby sitter in front of the TV, I really like that. I think it's very expensive, but they're providing a lot.
