I visited this facility

I went to look at Brookdale Olympia West. The thing I liked least about it was the smell. It was not fresh and clean-smelling. You see a bunch of senior citizens just kind of sitting around in different rooms, a lot of them by themselves. It wasn't homey, inviting, or fresh. It didn't have anything that I was really looking for. The people were unattended. The staff who gave me a tour was pleasant and seemed fairly knowledgeable about memory care. The rooms were clean and of average size. They had safety monitoring in there in case one of them fell. It's not a place I would take my mother-in-law. It's a step above the old-fashioned nursing home, but not a whole lot. They took a couple of the residents for a drive through Olympia. One lady said, "I didn't have any fun. I fell." They say they do barbecues, games, and activities, but I didn't see anything.

Brookdale Olympia West was a nice and secure community. It was very clean and appealing. It looked like there was a town square inside with a place for socializing. The lady who showed me around was very helpful and very kind. They had a library, some outside courtyards available, and a couple of TV rooms.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father moved into Brookdale Olympia West. They seem to be really accommodating, and everybody's been nice. It's a nice facility. It's OK as far as facilities go. There's been some miscommunication over him getting his showers and laundry done, but that's the only issue we've had. They seem to feed them well and they're distributing his medication, and that has made a big difference in how he is. He seems a lot happier. He's settled in and more well-adjusted. In the beginning, I think the schedule got screwed up or something, but it took a couple of weeks to get him a shower, which would get me up the wall. I think we've got that worked out, and the laundry situation. But other than that, everything's been pretty good. There's people at all levels in there. You could have a conversation with him, so it was a little tough for him at first to adjust to the other people. He didn't have anybody to really have a conversation with, only one other lady, and the rest of them were more advanced stages, and so you can't really converse too much with them. That's been hard for him, but he's really happy with the staff, especially the younger staff. They've been really good to him. He's in a studio. It's got a bathroom with it, and a sink. It's got a closet, we put his TV in there, and we pay for the cable. He's got a window where he can look out to a little bit of a grassy yard, and we brought him his chair from home. You can bring in some personal furnishings and make them feel at home. They have a little bus and they do take them on outings. It's a little bit on the pricey side. I don't think he is really excited about the meals. My mom was a gourmet cook, but I think they're balanced nutritionally, and they have a couple of chefs. I think it's good food. It's just not the top of the line he's used to.

I think what I liked best about Brookdale Olympia West was the atmosphere of caring. I didn't see any negatives. I toured their memory care and the systems that they have in place are reassuring to loved ones and show a lot of thought and care. The person that toured us was very pleasant, very knowledgeable, and understood our concerns. They have 3 different options for rooms so you get to pick the best fit for your loved one.

We actually chose Brookdale Olympia West just because of the energy there, the staff, and the facility itself. We just really liked the facilities. The staff members were really friendly, knowledgeable, and very positive. They had good interactions with the residents. The residents themselves seemed very happy. So, it was a really pleasant experience, the tour we had. I liked the outdoor area that was available. I'd like the security they had in place. The rooms were clean and bright. I liked the fact that they encourage the residents to get out of their rooms and interact with other people. They have some kind of customized diet. They can handle my mom's medications. She has diabetes, and they can handle that. I mean, there's an extra charge for that, but the point is that they can take care of those things for her. They have an activity schedule every day. They have lots of opportunities to interact and do things. It just seemed like a really nice place.

We spent 1.5 months working with them to move my father there for care. He is a Medicaid recipient and we were told he could move in and use Medicaid right away. They then completely changed their tune and said it would be $7,000/month for 18 months before we could switch to Medicaid. Darrin had absolutely no regard for them wasting our time or completely changing their policy mid-process. He blamed it all on an employee who no longer works there, despite us having started the application a month before Darrin claims they changed their policy AND with them still listed on DSHS as accepting Medicaid. They also went an entire week without contacting us despite multiple attempts to get ahold of them, and one day didn’t answer the main phone at all. I would absolutely not trust these people with caring for my loved one when they can’t even handle simple administration and communication. Darrin also refused to give me his supervisor’s name so that I could make a complaint. You will find no accountability or compassion here.

Provider Response

Thank you for taking the time to share you thoughts about your recent experience. We regret that we were unable to meet all of your expectations and adequately explain the Medicaid process from the beginning. We are also aware that the Executive Director was able to provide you with alternative resources for your father. Please be assured your feedback will be reviewed and used to help better serve our residents and their families.

Horrifically understaffed. Removed our parent and should not have waited so long to do it. Poorly managed, no followup phone calls when concerns addressed in regards to care. New facility staffed with more individuals than ever seen at Brookdale. New facility caretakers seek families out, update you and clearly take pride in their assigned patients. Concerning that Brookdale continues to be licensed.

Provider Response

We take your comments seriously and are committed to providing quality care and services to our residents and their families. Our management team has reviewed these concerns and we wish to assure you the safety and well-being of our residents is our top priority.

Brookdale Olympia West was a beautiful, excellent place. This would have been my first choice if it had been closer. The residents in the memory care unit were engaged in activities and seemed very happy. The staff was very nice, natural, and easy going. They communicated with their residents nicely, had great food, and a really nice and spacious memory care unit.

This is a beautiful facility and the staff are friendly. My father lived there one month before I moved him out to an adult care home. The lack of an adequate number of providers to care for dementia patients results in neglectful care. I watched the care providers "running" constantly to help residents but the demands of this type of population require an appropriate number of providers. I found the director to be very professional and met with her on a weekly basis to review the concerns that I had regarding my dad's care. The other staff members were doing their best but the workload is huge. It was a very disappointing experience and I can not recommend it.

Provider Response

I am a friend or relative of resident

My mom has been a resident here since 4/16/2014. The staff is awesome. The ED, Marni, is great to work with. Responds to your questions in a timely manner and addresses all issues face to face. The business manager, Misty, is awesome. She is so helpful that it's always a pleasure to talk to her and she's great helping you out when you need it. She is always running around the community and stays busy!! The nurse in charge is Debbie and has only been there 3 months. This is a person when it comes to care giving, truly cares about the residents and treats them like family. She is compassionate, understanding, and straight forward. She will answer your questions honestly, she manages my mom's care sufficiently, is constantly giving me advice on matters regarding my mom and is just great to deal with. Roxanne, the Activities Coordinator is geat and funny to be around. She's constantly working hard to engage the residents, takes them on bus rides and works to make sure they are as active as they can be. I've gotten to know most of the staff and I failed to mention the nursing staff.. They are great. Always answering questions, great in redirecting residents, calls me with questions or updates on my mom.. Kim, Kim, Muriel, and Laci are who I've dealt with and not only do i give them a A++ in service but they have earned their wings. It takes special people to work in a facility like this and I just can't say enough good things about the staff. I agree with some others on here that staffing could be better for dealing with the residents but everytime i'm there visiting, the caregivers are on the go all the time and very friendly to the residents and guests. There are two sides to this place and there's the caregiving and business side. I understand the business side and compared to other facilities around there, Clare Bridge was comparable to the other Tumwater facility with regards to staffing. It's not a one to one care place so I get that and understand. They do the best they can and it's true about everyone that works there. I gave 4 stars because of this.. Otherwise i have no complaints at all about the care. Sales is handled by Sherry and she is great to work with. She goes thru all the forms with you page by page and makes sure you understand everything you're signing. My mom is Medicaid so most of the paperwork was a whiz since it's all taken care of. Ask any question of Sherry and she'll have the answer for you. Clare Bridge is located across from Capital Medical Center on the West Side. It's a quiet area and we have never had a problem parking cars there. I think if you are looking for a facility, you will be happy with Clare Bridge. I realize everyone has different needs. Just be up front about your expectations and they'll be happy to talk to you about anything and everything regarding Clare Bridge.

Do not send family member to this facility. We were charged five hundred extra dollars because they had to feed my Grandfather, yet he always had food all over his face and clothes. They neglect their residents. It is hard to ever find a nurse or CNA when visiting. They left my Grandfather with no shoes on only socks when he is a fall risk and the floor was hardwood. If you try to set up an appointment to meet with the administration about your concerns they will cancel on you for no good reason. Nurses are extremely rude and not helpful. The staffing changes constantly. I have kept records of when I see neglect and plan to report them to APS. I strongly suggest finding another home for your loved one.

My visits to Clare Bridge of Olympia were always pleasure filled. The one of a kind staff is always willing to go above and beyond to make it's residents and visitors feel more than welcome. It is a newer facility with vibrant colors and spacious rooms which makes it feel very lively. They allow you to have small pets which may be a problem for some people but my Grandmother loved having her dog with her. Another great thing they have is activities you the whole family can enjoy making for a all around great visit!

I have come in contact with many of the staff that would in this facility. They encourage Life Enrichment with these seniors and take the seniors out on sight seeing tours every Saturday. As well as conduct movie and comedy nights. The people who live here seem overall happy and to enjoy their space that is provided. The family is encouraged to make the residents rooms as comfortable as possible and are allowed to bring in decorations and televisions for loved ones.

The best way to describe my visit in this facility was I was pleasingly surprised of the good interaction. I was not able to tour the grounds but from the inside it looks nice. I think if you want to go outside you can just call out to a staff and they will assist you. However, I saw two bench areas where you can sit down. We saw three rooms. The first one was called Emily, it was their show room. All amenities were there and you can even take out the bed and bring your own. The second room was a shared bedroom by two women. It was unkept but that's understandable because it was accommodated. I also saw the residents doing an exercise. They were sitting in a chair with a leader in front. The administrator also mingles with the residents pretty well.

This Facility seemed fantastic the few times I was there. They were very helpful and friendly at the front desk whenever I went. They have some activities for the patients and for their visitor. My uncle even has his wiener dog with him at all times, and he loves that thing more than anything. The only thing I noticed that wasn't great was how often the caregivers checked up on the patients. The facility seems fairly new, I'm not sure if it is or they just remodel often, but it has a great uplifting atmosphere. I have only visited in the summer months, but it seems they have a lot to offer in the summer, I've heard that isn't so in the winter months, but who does have a lot to do then? My family plans on keeping my uncle at this facility for a long time, we are quite happy so far!

The staff seemed fairly knowledgeable and friendly. Although, the front desk staff on weekends had a hard time answering any of my questions, and had problems locating my family member when I arrived. The amenities were above average, but seemed only geared towards summer activities. The facilities were also kept in great repair, they seemed to remodel fairly often. They allowed pets and residents were allowed to decorate their rooms which I though was a nice touch.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Though most of the caregivers were kind and greeted family members with courtesy, many of the elderly people were left in their wheel chairs in the hallway for hours. As you walk through the hallway, there are people lined outside the doors as well as bathroom lights lit up. I have great appreciation for good care, as I am a caregiver myself at an Adult Family Home. I hate to say that the care is bad, because usually with loving and kind people (as the people at Clare Bridge seem to be,) comes loving and kind care. The problem probably exists with a horrible caregiver:resident ratio, as most nursing homes have this issue. My grandmother was at this nursing home and had many days where her hair was not washed as it should be, etc.. Not okay.
