What to Consider About Memory Care in Dallas County

Dallas County includes the city of Dallas and many of its suburbs; it is one of the most populous counties in the state. Out of the millions of Texas residents, over 380,000 have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or dementia. Dallas County estimates that 12.6 percent of its population of 2.5 million have a cognitive impairment. Seniors aged 65 and older, 10 percent of Dallas County's population, are especially vulnerable to these conditions. To care for these folks, Dallas County has over 1,100 memory care facilities.

The State of Texas's Department of Health and Human Services regulates memory care facilities, both those that are part of a larger assisted living community and those that are secure, stand-alone memory care facilities. Requirements for memory care facilities stipulate specialized staff training and certification. These are designated Type B facilities and are home to residents who need overnight supervision and staff assistance to evacuate in an emergency.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Memory Care in

  • Dallas County is known for a climate of long, hot summers and mild winters. Late summer highs can reach the high 90s or over 100, but cold winters and snow are rare. Those in memory care with health conditions alleviated by warm weather may find relief, but seniors sensitive to high heat may be uncomfortable outdoors.
  • Because Texas does not have a state income tax, Social Security benefits and retirement accounts might be larger for families coming to the area, who may find this savings helpful when budgeting for memory care.
  • The overall cost of living for Dallas County is slightly higher than the national average. This area encompasses many of the state's more affluent suburbs, however, so some families on a tighter budget may want to look more closely at the different cities in the area.
  • The Dallas area is home to world-class medical facilities, including those specializing in brain health and dementia care, such as Baylor University Medical Center and Medical City Dallas Hospital, in the event of medical emergencies or illness.
