I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Island Shores doesn't provide any care. We brought in aides for my mother because they're an independent living place so they don't supply any care. They have housekeeping in the room, that's all they have. They make the meals in the dining room but to be honest, that was one of the reasons why I thought I had to move her. My mother has severe dementia and she's starting to spit, which I know is kind of part of it, so she hasn't been allowed to eat in the dining room. They bring the food up to her room and the food is fair. Because of Covid and everything, they took a lot of things away and kind of raised the rent. They used to have entertainment, they used to have somebody come in, play guitar, sing for the people, and give them something to do. They kind of don't have that anymore, for some reason. I know people are looking for work, I'm a musician myself, so I can't imagine that no musician can come in and play for them for an hour and just wear a mask or whatever. They could have even done it during the summer, outside, and had somebody do something but they just didn't do anything. It's like they have no stimulation. I don't know the business and I don't know the ins and outs of why they're not doing it, but all I know is that they raised the rent and took away any of the entertainment they used to have. For activities, they just either have bingo or some type of arts and crafts and that's it. They used to have the entertainment, they used to go on trips to the shopping plaza, and they used to rent a bus for this. I can understand that, maybe, they don't want to have people crowded on a bus but it's not like any of them abide by the rules of wearing masks anyway. They kind of just use them as chin straps. It's pretty inexpensive though compared to what I could spend.

I visited this facility

The facilities at Island Shores were very old. They're almost tired. They could use some restyling because they looked as though they haven't changed anything since they opened, but the staff was very pleasant, and the grounds were pretty. The people who were there had only positive things to say, and the price was the most reasonable of any place you see on Staten Island. Everything was included. They had a few activities, an art room, movies, TVs, and computers. It's independent living but they have a nurse that comes, and medical personnel if you need to.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I visited my aunt at Island Shores Senior Residences. It was technically independent, but it was assisted. Everybody had aides. It was a good community, and she enjoyed it. We had no issues there. They would go out, they had Bingo, board games, and a lot of things for them. She enjoyed the food; she thought it was very good.

I was very disappointed in the honesty of the sales pitch of what they can provide for the person who lives there. We were very upfront about my mother having some dementia and they assured us it would not be a problem. It was a problem. We had to spend extra money on personal aides for her because the facility provides no assistance for the residents whatsoever. In addition to that we were constantly getting calls of complaints about her if she did anything that they didn’t approve of. It started to feel like harassment. Finally we were told she couldn’t continue to live there unless we paid for 24 hour aides for her, which is completely unaffordable. We finally moved her to another facility. If you are considering living there or having a person you know live there be aware that they must be completely independent or can afford to pay for personal aide services. They were not nice, caring or compassionate about our situation and we were extremely relieved to get her into another facility. We also found the servers in the restaurant to be rude and dismissive to the residents.

My friend is currently at Island Shores, and it's beautiful. There's one person per room, you can have a double room or single room, they have all cherry wood furniture, or you can bring your own furniture. They supply you with a television, with cable, and you only have to pay your telephone. They have a gym, one room if you want to have a party, they have a doctor and nurse on hand, a hair cutting salon, and a podiatrist comes in. The dining area looks like you're going to a restaurant. It has a homey atmosphere, and the people are very nice. I haven't had any bad experiences so far. My friend is very happy with his meals, and they know exactly what he likes.

I have my mother at Island Shores. It is clean. It is close to my home. They are very friendly, and I have a lot of good feedback from the people in the community. I speak to a lot of them, and they like it there. The rooms are very nice, very clean, and spacious. I think the food is very good. I am happy with the food, and my mom is happy with the food. She has only been there two month, but I guess she is doing fine. She socializes in bingo and whatever else they have going on there. The staff is very good.

I visited this facility

Island Shores is an older building but very well-kept. The rooms were small, but the people seemed well-cared-for. They had a nice dining room. The lunch was pretty crowded, but they seemed to be enjoying their meals. They go on trips and have parties. The price was reasonable. I was impressed with them.

I visited this facility

I visited Island Shores for my stepmother. They have very nice living quarters and a lot of activities. They have friendly staff. The facility seemed well taken care of. The other facility was just better than this one. At Island Shores, you can't get a room with a view of the ocean. It didn't appear to be a place where seniors could really go for a walk to get to a store on their own.

I visited this facility

I have visited this place many times in my field and I cannot recommend it enough. Quality care mixed with quality surroundings. Excellent and safe location with views of the water and gated walkways. Also the best bang for your buck on Staten Island-skip the name brands-or it will cost you $$$.
