I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom moved into American House Holland last year. On the outside, it's very nice, pretty and clean. The room is very large, nice, and carpeted, and she's got three bay windows that she loves. The staff is the problem. It's a great place other than the staff. They can't keep anybody on. People leave left and right, and so, I'm not very happy with that. Unfortunately, because they're understaffed, there hasn't been much that they offer for activities. The food is awful. For a memory care unit, they serve cold sandwiches, and most people with memory care units, can't chew very well. They need to get together and they need to figure out what they can do to provide better food, more comfort food, and softer foods.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother is in American House Holland. She's doing quite well. We had a nice team helping us get settled in. We chose it because it's closer to where my family lives. Second, it was the only one that had an opening, and we needed to move in immediately. It's very clean. They've got spacious rooms and they're very private rooms. There's a sitting area, like a little living room area, and then a place for a table. There's a place for a bedroom area around the corner and a nice spacious bathroom. It's very clean and airy. It's a nice facility. The staff has been really good. There's been some changeover, but once the staff is familiar with my mom, they've been really good. Food can be a little lacking. Some of it is because she doesn't have much of an appetite, but the food is OK. I wouldn't say it's great. It's fine. They have at least one or two things every day that you can choose from. They have crafts, and they have a Bible study. They have someone come in and do your nails. They have a beautician who does your hair once a week if you want to have that done. They do bingo. There are a lot of activities, and she's made some nice friends there. They have books and puzzles. They have like a little activity room where they can do things. What I like about the space is that it's small. There are not that many residents in each room. There are six different buildings and her building is smaller, so there's more attentiveness and they get to know each other. They don't have nurses. They have med techs. They don't have CNAs. They have caregivers. The level of quality of care is not quite as high medically as my mom needed when she first got there, but they all did step up to the plate and do what they needed to do, so that's quite good. The facility was nice. It's very expensive. It's all out of pocket.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I chose to live here in American House Holland because the residents all have an upbeat attitude. That's the main thing. That it has a positive outlook and it has a lot of activities. We often have music or live entertainment brought in a couple or three times a week. I have a two-bedroom apartment and it is very smal, but I have a full kitchen, a dishwasher, and a stove. They serve breakfast and lunch. The main meal is lunch and it is included in my monthly rent. The food is adequate. It's not wonderful and not up to what I would consider a restaurant standard. but I am full. The people are very, very friendly, very cooperative, and willing to help you in any way they can. The individual apartments have a lot of privacy and it's very nice. It is just an old building, but mostly I am very comfortable and the price is very reasonable for what I get.

American House Holland seems to be a nice area for respite care only for a week. It's clean, and I didn't smell anything when I walked there. It seems to be an organized place for seniors. It's very convenient and quiet. The staff who accommodated me was friendly and nice. The room she showed me was big enough for one person. It's clean and organized, but we have to bring our own stuff. They only provided a bed for my father. The common room is more where people can play some acuity games or whatever. It's not that big a place, but they have activities.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My cousin moved in today at American House Holland. It was the first and only one we visited, but we were just so delighted by their immediate response to us. They had a very warm welcome. They immediately showed her some available rooms and she just really liked what she saw. There were a lot of friendly people there that greeted her and she felt like it was going to be a fun place. They told her about some of the activities that she could participate in, and that perked her up a lot. So, she didn't want to look any further. They worked hard to get her placement and get her in just as fast. There's no upcharge for laundry. She gets cable, internet, food, and snacks. Everything is included. The other thing that's amazing about the staff there is when you call, they answer the phone. You don't get a voicemail and wait 4 or 5 hours for a callback. It's been tremendous. Everybody that works at the place has been getting her settled and determining her needs, likes, and dislikes. They're very, very interested. It seems like they want to make her stay there pleasant. From what I see, the activities look amazing. Some of the things that she is quite interested in are games, cards, and socializing with other people her age. They go on outings a lot. Also, their activities director is just for that building. They have different activities directors for each building. So, they work with the residents in that building to help them enjoy whatever they want to do.

We liked American House Holland. It was a nice place and it was affordable. They have a good program and I think I would put my mom there in a heartbeat. They had two different kinds of rooms. They had a full apartment and a studio and either one of them was great. It's clean. They offer a lot of medical stuff. They run a nice memory care program and they care for the safety of their residents. They have an activity room and a calendar on the wall of activities they have every day.

My mother is living in American House Holland. It's been very frustrating. A lot of staff turnover. The food is sometimes horrible. There are periods of time where it's horrible, and then there are periods of time where it's OK. They have a very hard time keeping their kitchen staffed. They go through chefs like crazy. It's just constant turnover and very inconsistent, and same with the CNAs, the nursing staff, the people that care for the residents. Very inconsistent, tremendous turnover. I don't know what the problem is. I can't get any answers. I just get lots of excuses as to why they can't do things the way they feel they should because they can't keep the help. I know our economy is in a very weird place right now, but it's not OK for those residents to have constant turnover. And every time shift change comes, they don't know who's going to come into their room. It's not a familiar face all the time. The facility is nice. She's supposed to get housekeeping along with her base rate rent. When she first moved in, housekeeping would come in once or twice a week. Somebody would come in and make her bed every day. There are days that she doesn't get her bed made because they just don't have enough help. That's the excuse we keep getting. We don't have enough help. And my mother is very particular about that. If she could make her own bed every day, she would. But if she could make her own bed every day, she probably wouldn't be in assisted living. They have activities. I think they have things every day. She hasn't participated in all of them, but they do have activities, and they're decent. They go on outside outings occasionally, and then they have activities in the building.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom was at American House Holland for three to four days. It started out fine. They were very nice to us and they got their money, but they put her in quarantine on the first day she was there because she had been exposed to my sister-in-law who tested positive for COVID the day before we got to the center. They assured us that there would be somebody to take care of her in the memory care and that it would not be a big deal, but they didn't have enough staff to take care of mom. She woke up during the night and didn't know where she was. She has dementia. The next day, they kind of blamed us for the problem. They asked for my sister to spend the night with her so that my sister could take care of her instead of them taking care of her. I thought it was unacceptable, because we're paying for them to take care of her. So, my sister ended up staying with my mom 24/7 for the next two or three days. My mom was incredibly unhappy, even though my sister was there. She didn't like the food and they didn't want to give her anything different. My other sister had to come in with food for mom. They were not very accommodating to her. They seemed to be very frustrated with her instead. We decided we needed to just take her out of there. Now, they wouldn't give us back the money that we paid to put her in there. I would not recommend anybody going to that facility at all.

American House Holland is very clean. The most important thing to us was the staff and their concern and help through the process. The rooms are clean. My sister is in their memory care. The surroundings seem relaxed and pleasant. Our experience has been very good.

The American House in Holland was very nice. I'd love to move my mom into that one, but we're still figuring out how to afford it. It was the assisted living that we were able to tour. It was good. I saw the facility, I saw one of the rooms and the other auxiliary things like the bathrooms and things like that. I like the fact that she would be with other people and would have assistance in getting out to eat and socialize with other people. It just seems like a nice facility and the people seemed nice and helpful. It's also a great location. It's on a busy street and industrial but the actual community itself is nicely landscaped with water features and things like that. It really wouldn't be that bad for my mom. I didn't have that much interaction with the staff, but they seemed nice when they were working with the residents. The one-room that I saw was very nice. I just didn't think it would suit my mother only because she's kind of picky, and that was a very small room. They weren't able to show me one of the bigger rooms or the split 1-bedroom room. I did see floor plans and I like those layouts. It was a nice room though and it was clean.

I went to look at American House Holland. I thought it was a very nice place. The room seemed nice. It had a window, and it seemed like it could be quite homey. The staff was very nice. They have some amenities. They have a craft room and a television room. It was a nice place. I was just kind of checking things out for when the time would come.

American House Holland was exceptional. The facility was clean. The employees there were very friendly. They're very concerned about the general welfare of the residents there. I would definitely consider them in the future. The staff who assisted me was very polite and very thorough in telling me everything I needed to know. They were very good. The place was very clean and very organized. It's a very nice place. The location is good for Dad because of his friends and family.

I went to American House Holland and looked at their memory care. The place was nice and clean. I actually got to see somebody who was recently admitted and how they were fitting in. I got to see the rooms, and they were nicely organized and clean. I had concerns about my father, and sometimes his language and his behaviors, and they were ready to accommodate. They're used to it, so it was an overall real good experience. I like that their pricing never changes, so that was probably my biggest selling point. You could go in and you still have the same ratio of staff to residents and there's no change or charge for the changes as they progress. The rooms were nice, and I liked the way that they were arranged. Being memory care, there's no place where the person could go in, and think they're gonna shower in their own room, and they're actually going to be safely bathed. I like the size of their room, because for him he doesn't need a lot of space, and it was nice that they actually had somebody out with the residents trying to get them to interact to keep their mind engaged. I like seeing that person physically out there with the residents trying to engage them and work with them and do the things that sometimes at home, you just don't have time to do. They had amenities there and there was a nice, clean area for the families to come in and safely spend some time with their loved ones. They actually had zero cases of COVID. I asked some of the staff's phone numbers and they were quick to provide them. They had two meals, and they said that they give them two options per meal. In my father's case, less is better to offer, so for me, that worked out great.

We've chosen American House Holland for my mom. It has spacious rooms, caring staff, and they have activities, but not during COVID. They have laundry, housekeeping, and meals. She's got a very large area, with a kitchenette, and a separate bedroom and private bathroom. She hasn't had any activities yet because of the shutdown.

I visited American House Holland. It seemed fine but if it's just renting an apartment, I am happy to stay in my condo. It seemed fine but it's not what I really wanted. I was assuming it was like an independent living where you are renting the apartment. It also did not seem like they had anywhere near the amenities that the other one I went to does. But on the other hand, there is a big difference in the cost. She was able to show me inside an apartment. We looked through a window of one where they were working on the carpeting. She seemed pleasant and she showed me things and talked to me for a bit. There were benches outside some of the buildings and there were ladies chatting. I think there was a covered patio where you can sit. If you have friends, you can sit there and maybe play cards or do a little picnic or something. It seemed well maintained. Somebody moved out of the apartment that she showed me. And they were replacing the carpets, which says that they are trying to keep things up and updating it. The building seemed fine. It is more of a developed area. I am very spoiled because of where I live now, I have a little woods behind my unit which gives me a more country feel.

We had a good visit at American House Holland. The ladies were very nice. I appreciated that they got right down to it and didn’t waste my time or their time too much. I got a great tour, my questions were answered, and they sent me home with some good paperwork, too. They also introduced me to a person who lived there; it was very nice chatting with her. They had a couple of different kinds of rooms in the assisted living, including a studio with a bedroom, living room, and a little kitchenette. For the independent living, it was a separate bedroom, a nice kitchen, L-shaped kitchen, living room, a walk-up patio, closet, and a nice bathroom. In the independent-living, there weren't any showers, so they had to go someplace else to shower.

I could not be in American House because I’m on low income. When you walk in, there’s a smell, which is not pleasant. The dining area was very beautiful, comfy, and very homey. They had a washer and dryer in your apartment.

I liked American House, and my husband placed my name on the waiting list. I was impressed with the setting since it was right in the middle of nature and turkeys wandered the grounds. I was pleased with the staff I met. They seemed to know what they were doing, were friendly, and forthcoming with the questions that I had. I was there during lunch. It was not like dining at the Ritz, but it was pretty reasonably good. I saw a one-bedroom apartment that was small but adequate. They all had balconies, washers and dryers which was real helpful, little kitchenettes, living room, and the bedroom. It was set up quite nicely. The place was well run, and the staff appreciates where they are, which translates to the residents feeling the same way.

American House was clean and nicely decorated, but the cost was a little higher than what my parents could afford. The location was good. The grounds were under a foot of snow, but I think they’re fine. I noticed some water damage and cracks on the wall in one the rooms. That was the only thing I noticed that was a miss for the facility.

American House Holland was a little older, and you could tell it was more-used. It was one-level, which was kind of nice. The places were smaller like the entry, and dining area. It was also a month-to-month lease which was nice. They were very good. You could tell it was an older place that was repainted, redecorated, and wasn’t dated. They showed us a new place. When we went in to the unit it was empty, they had some tools, and they were repairing everything before they re-lease it. They took care of all that. The buildings were layed out seemed more like a community.

We really liked American House. That was actually my and my husband's first choice, but the another place opened a 1/2 mile from my mother-in-law's house. We got the information from caring.com and called them. We were really impressed because they sent somebody out right away to evaluate my father-in-law's condition, then took us on a very informative tour through the eating facilities and all of that. We were very happy with them. I liked the rooms. Some of them had a bed right in the room and some of them had a separate bedroom. My father-in-law would have been in the highest level of care. So they probably would be feeding him in his room. The people were very friendly in the hallways, even a lot of the residents seemed to be quite friendly. We thought it would be a good place, but my mother-in-law wanted a place closer to home.
