I went to The Devonshire. The price was reasonable. It was very clean. The activity sheet was good. I like one of their plans. They had an alcove room plan that was very interesting. The staff that I met was very personal and professional. They have different options, but the alcove room had small appliances like a microwave. You have the option to bring your own.

My friend has moved into The Devonshire. She likes it and that's where we went. Its price is something she can afford versus where she was before which she couldn't afford any longer. She is happy where she is now. Her room is a studio apartment. It's a little bit smaller than from where she came from but it's working for her. The dining areas are good. The food seems to be good because she is eating it. She has no complaints about the food or anything. So far, it seems so good. The staff is outstanding. They help her with everything that they could possibly do. We don't have any problems with the staff at this time. They have all kinds of daily activities like outings at least once a week, movie nights, bingo every three days, trivia games, adult coloring classes, and all the stuff that she likes doing.

The Devonshire is not on my list because they do not have a full kitchen. The staff said they were more of assisted living, and they didn't have full kitchens, which I didn't like. I want a full kitchen so that I can cook if I choose. They didn't have a washer and dryer in the unit. I went to one room. It's very small, much smaller than what I want, and a little farther south than where I wanted to be. However, the staff who accommodated me with the tour was very nice. The place was updated, very nice, and very clean.

Provider Response

Hi Barbara, Thank you for your feedback. We do have some apartments on Assisted Living that have full kitchens if you would like to come tour again and look at those. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Thank you.

My sister is now living in The Devonshire. It is nice and clean, and it's located in a nice area. The room is bright and sunny, the people are smiling, they have nice and friendly staff, and it's a nice and comfortable place. She enjoys and eats their food. They have a full monthly schedule of activities posted on the board, they have activities in the lower lobby, they can do bingo, and they have an exercise room where she can exercise, and it's just nice. They have a store where she can go and purchase little items if she wanted to, they have a bus that runs on certain days and takes them to the doctor's office if they have an appointment and take them to do their banking that they need, and to other appointments. Everything is right there. It takes a lot of pressure off of the caregivers and the families. Plus, they go into the rooms and clean up themselves twice a month. So that helps out a lot.

Provider Response

Hi Betty, We are so happy that you are pleased with our Community and services! We look forward to continue caring for your loved one.

The Devonshire was lovely. It's very, very nice and clean. The gentleman that gave the tour personally knew everybody that was there. He knew their names and everything. The only thing was he took pictures of the tour and he was supposed to text them to me, but he never sent me those. Other than that, the rooms were good. They got adequate space and it was something I would live in.

I did a tour of The Devonshire. It was very informative and very nice. The staff was very nice and kind to us. Everything looked new and updated. They had some nice programs for senior citizens to get out in the community. They had their own bus there and everything. So, it's nice. The apartments were good sized, it was roomy. They had one and two bedrooms. They take the senior citizens out shopping to shopping centers and stuff like that. They play games like bingo and a few other things. They provide meals for independent living.

I went to The Devonshire. It was beautiful. The staff were good. They showed me a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom, and they were nice. I saw the salon, the sitting area, a little room to do exercises, the laundry room and the dining area. All of those were excellent. I saw the residents, and they were chair exercising then. I also saw how the management acted toward the residents. He knew most of them by their first name, so he seemed very friendly. The place was very clean, and it had a nice smell to it.

I visited this facility

I toured The Devonshire. It was pretty nice and well-decorated. It had 3 floors, and it's more like an apartment style. They had studio rooms to 2-bedroom apartments. The studio apartment had a kitchen, a stove-top oven, and a full-size refrigerator. There was an option for a bathtub or a walk-in shower. It was pretty nice. There was a TV in the activity room and 24-hour staffing. I have seen some puzzles out on a table. They also had a piano in a corner.

I did a tour of The Devonshire. The staff were all helpful, pleasant, and encouraging. The rooms we saw were very adequate, just what we were looking for. It's a place for a loved one. It was small but it was just what we needed, no more, no less than what my uncle needed. We looked at the one-bedroom which had a kitchenette, living room, and bedroom. We also looked at a studio that did not have a kitchen, but they have a dining hall. We were impressed with the common dining area. It was like a restaurant. There was no one in the dining area. It was pretty cold that day, but we were able to see the possibilities of using outside. The grounds were very well kept. We saw some residents playing bingo, some are just conversing in the common area. I like the location. It's not too far from where my uncle lives. So, he has several friends in the area, and people can go visit him. I was impressed with that and the fact that it was so close to the hospital if we needed it. I like the caretaker; he impressed me with this knowledge. The caretaker was the director, I guess. With the knowledge he had of all of the residents and personnel. He just knew them all personally, and he spoke to everybody. They spoke to him like he was part of the family.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I have moved into The Devonshire. The experience has been great. I enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the staff and the residents. I enjoy the fact that I can have meals delivered to my door. I appreciate it. The staff would call me five days a week to check on me to see how I'm doing. I enjoy some games and the activities that they have. They have activities for the veterans, and I'm a veteran. The ceremony was really sweet. They gave us a flag, a certificate, and a picture frame. I thought that was nice that they observe Veterans Day. I appreciate it, and I enjoyed it. So I appreciate the benefits and the nice, friendly atmosphere that I'm in and I'm very thankful to be here. The food is good. It tastes good. The overall condition of the place is great. My apartment was very clean when I got here, and somebody would be coming to help clean my apartment twice a month. Other places are more expensive than here.

The Devonshire is a good option for anybody. Our experience there was excellent. The facility was professional looking. Everything looked good. It was clean, and everybody was polite and explained everything to us. We enjoyed the tour. The gentleman was professional and helpful. We were shown all three levels. We saw everything in the facility. They had a library, beauty shop, and a dining room area and menus of what they were going to feed you and all that. It's a really good facility. The rooms were clean and everything looked good.

I only visited the independent level at The Devonshire. I didn't visit the assisted living side because they had a couple of COVID cases. What I liked best were the rooms. The one-bedroom was very homey and inviting, and I liked the layout. They had an activity room, hair salon, barber shop, and a small store where they can buy small personal items. It appeared very clean. I had an excellent tour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, very pleasant, and helpful, and answered all my questions. They made me feel very comfortable.

The tour at The Devonshire was great. It was clean. The people were friendly. It's a very nice facility. I would recommend it. It looks pretty nice. We got a brochure of the costs, and they were able to show us three apartments that were available. The staff who gave the tour was very good, very professional, knowledgeable, and very friendly. It was very clean with no odor. All three of the rooms we saw were empty. They were different sizes. We also saw the model, which was a 1-bedroom. It was very nice. They have a barbershop, a beauty salon, an exercise room, and a laundry room to wash your own clothes. They have housekeeping services for the clients a couple of times a week. They also provide two meals a day. They have bus transportation for doctor's visits and shopping.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My brother-in-law has moved to The Devonshire. The place was nice and clean, and the staff was very helpful. When they set up appointments, there were people there to greet us. It was overall a good experience. We talked to a lot of the residents as well that was kind of there in the lobby, and they all seemed to also share that they had had a good experience living there. That made us feel comfortable. The staff was attentive. They have the first person you see who answers all your questions. And they go over what the programs are like, and what facilities there that are available with the cost structure. It looks like she was really good and very transparent or open about everything that we can expect. So that put us at ease knowing that there weren't going to be some kind of hidden costs later on. And then we were handed over to the moving coordinator who handled all of this stuff, including hooking up the cable and making sure the place was ready. He made sure we're getting help moving stuff in. He has followed up two or three times both with my brother-in-law and me. The staff has been very, very helpful and very professional and made all of it go smoothly. In-house, they have activities just about every day, bingo and other game stuff is going on. And then they have a signup sheet where you can sign up for outside activities, movies, museum trips, and various offsite things. They have a shuttle that takes you there and back and helps you along the way. There are some limits on how many people but it's first come, first serve. And that was a big reason why we wanted to move him in somewhere rather than living in an apartment by himself. There were social functions that you could go and do without having to go drive somewhere or go too far out of your way. You could participate in social activities and they had a lot of them there. The food is good. It was a nice touch that when we went there for the initial discussion, it happened to be during lunchtime. So they took us over and let us eat in the dining room so we could taste the food. So I had lunch there which was lasagna, and it was very good. He's had several meals there now and he likes it. You get a menu, and you can choose from whatever the options are that day. Or you can choose from a variety of things they have every day, like grilled cheese sandwiches and things that are kind of staples. So it's not cafeteria dining, it's more like dining room dining where they have waiters and waitresses. It was really good. The facilities and the amenities are comparable to more expensive ones.

The staff here at The Devonshire is caring. I've gone to a different place that was more concerned about appearances yet was not as friendly, but this community is friendly and concerned about you. I like the way they respect you and I like the activities that they have. They have bingo, karaoke, and a chaplain who comes out on Wednesday. They offer scrabbles, word puzzles, and trips to a Walmart or farmer's market. I just love their attitude and their spirit. They have a beauty salon and a beautiful library upstairs. The meals are nice. They have breakfast, lunch, and dinner and they have a beautiful chef. The servers are so nice, too. If you can't come down and get your meal, they have somebody to bring them up to you. Then they have an alternate menu if you want to eat something else. We have transportation to banks or medical appointments, which we had to sign up in advance. The driver is also excellent.

My parents are moving into The Devonshire. We loved them so much, that we just signed the contract. You can tell that they care about their residents very much. They know every single one of them by name, by heart. It just blew my mind. They treated everybody with respect, calling them by their last name, Mr. so and so. It was awesome. The amenities were the other big seller for us. They have an activity schedule that's ever-changing and very diverse, and it is very accommodating. The residents seemed very excited about the activities. They provide two meals a day. We met a lot of staff. We only saw a few rooms though. They were being renovated, so we hadn't seen the finished product yet. It was really good even though it was in a renovation state. They have different activities as far as hobbies from puzzles to crafts to board games and card games. They had them throughout the week at different times. They had trips to museums, restaurants, and movies, and they had regular scheduling for doctors' appointments every week. They only required 72-hour notice for scheduling. They have a chapel, a salon, a library, and a grotto in the backyard for gardening. It was a really beautiful garden for at least walking and sitting.

The Devonshire is centrally located where you have shopping and pharmacies in the area. The place was clean and the staff seemed to be nice and accommodating. The amenities were nice and the rooms were spacious. They also have a salon where you could get your haircut. It would have been perfect for someone like me, but unfortunately, the way that it was set up (as far as the payment), I just can't afford it.

When I live there the people was very nasty to me. They rarely spoke to me and other. The cost to stay there was very very expensive. That is why they have so many empty room because of the price. On my floor only me and one other resident who was moving out because they found the same type of facility but cheaper. The bus was old and always broke down. The food was very very salty and the don't cook healthy food. You had to pay extra to have your meals brought to you if you're not feel well. They fired a lot of staff. I did not enjoy my stay there at all.

I toured The Devonshire and saw both their independent and assisted living. It was nice because the people were outside sitting and it made me feel at home. They were just sitting there and they welcomed me saying, "Hi. How are you doing?". That was a nice thing and I liked that. We went inside and my daughter said it was looking clean and it was looking much better than the other places we have visited. I'm blind, I can't see so I'm going by her word. They had cooking, cleaning, shopping trips, and any place else you wanted to go like your doctor appointments. All of that was included and they give you your medication too. It was all for an extra fee though and that's what I didn't like. I was at a level 2, which is $1,000 added on to my price. They had a beauty parlor there. The person who gave us the tour was good. The tour was good too but he took me to one room that hadn't been open since 1986. I asked why and if there was somebody that died there. He said no but he closed it back up so I didn't understand that. I liked the ambiance of the place. Everything was to be replaced and remodeled too so it was good.

I toured The Devonshire. I don't need assisted living. If I can get like aides to come, I can stay in independent living. What I like the most was that the atmosphere was comfortable. The people, the staff were good, nice, friendly, and comfortable. Some of the residents spoke, so they were good. They didn't make me feel awkward and didn't make me feel out of place even though they were way older than me. Their apartments are nice sizes, so, that was a plus. For independent you have to pay for your own cable. I saw a washer and dryer for laundry. I saw a dining facility and they got a little weight room. I told them it's not a gym but a closet. Electric was included, so everything was included in the rent or whatever you want to call it. It was in a nice business area, and I saw a lot of shopping centers around. They had a nice little patio where you can go sit down and relax. They did not have a pool, though, so that was a negative.

I love the upkeep of The Devonshire Senior Living. I love the staff, the staff is extremely professional and very thorough. I spoke with a couple of the residents there, they seem in a pleasant mood, and to me, that's a reflection of the facility. I was able to also see the 1-bedroom apartment, which is a nice place. Overall, I was very pleased and the prices as well were very consistent, they were accommodating. They showed me both independent and assisted living and what they offer. Do they understand what kind of a message they offer there in advance? They offer meal services, if a resident needs assistance they have someone on call and they're in the facility to assist the process. So it's like you're with independent living, you get the best of both worlds. You get the security in case your loved ones need some assistance, but they still have some type of independence with them. It gives them that sense of independence as well, so that's what I love about that place. The gentleman who showed me around was very professional.

The Devonshire Senior Living has very friendly people. The employees, as well as the people living there, were all very nice. And my mother-in-law, when she heard the food that they were having for dinner, she had a fit, because she had not had liver and onions in 10 years. So the food excited her. If there's anything that you wanted to do, they would get a group together and do that particular thing. They had a gym and they had a room where they did some arts and stuff. I think I had two meals a day there, which was fine. They had people coming and doing music and stuff like that for entertainment. The only thing is that they don't have sufficient parking.

I like The Devonshire. I would give them a 5 because of the amenities, as far as the different recreational programs and the services like housekeeping. The staff was very knowledgeable and very pleasant to speak to. The staff showed me a one-bedroom. My sister has a walker, and she has difficulty standing up on her own. The bedroom was geared towards the handicapped person. It was very accessible. They give classes and exercise in the morning. They have a full recreational calendar. They have a library. They go on bus trips and transportation if you want to go shopping. The area was nice, clean and neat in the morning. It looks like a very new community.

We're in The Devonshire, and the place is great. Before I even got there, the lady on the phone, her customer service skills were so good, I was done. I didn't have to come up there. When I went there, I was blown away. It felt just like at home, you weren't just another resident, you felt like part of things. I was waiting for my wife to get approved to go, and they helped us all along the way in, and I just can't get over that. The lady we just talked to answered any questions we had, and the layout was so great. It felt like home as soon as I walked through the door. We saw a one-bedroom apartment. Everything, like the bedroom, the kitchen was good, the bathroom, everything was great, and it had a nice, big closet. They were playing bingo, and they got other stuff there. They've got a whole activity board, they've got a calendar, they go on trips, they go shopping, there's just so much going on there. They made you feel like family. The food was excellent; good chef.

The Devonshire seemed quite nice. I was surprised that the people that live there weren't involved in greeting potential newcomers. The rooms were very nice. They have laundry facilities, they have things they do, and different groups, but one thing I realized after the tour, was the fact that they said I could have a dog, which was acceptable. However, it dawned on me, I don't believe there's an enclosed area where the dog can be let loose. In other words, regardless of the weather, I have to go out and walk the dog two or three times a day. There are no provisions for a pet even though you're allowed to have them. It seems well laid out, clean, neat, and well taken care of. They had a gathering that I could have gone to, but I was not free to go. The staff seemed very nice. There's no issue there whatsoever.

Provider Response

Thank you for your review! We are pleased you enjoyed your visit at The Devonshire. Most of our residents with pets walk their dogs in our enclosed court yards. If you have any questions please give us a call. We hope to see you again!

I toured The Devonshire and I met up with Miss Alicia. She was wonderful and very accommodating. The only thing I didn't like about that is that the rooms are excessively small. I have a two-bedroom where I am and I don't expect to take everything with me if I was going to independent living, and I understand I would have to downsize, but that would be too much downsizing. A lot of it. You get two meals a day and if you want extra, you have to pay six dollars and seventy-five cents or something like that for the extra meal added. They do not have indoor laundry facilities. I mean, you don't have it in your apartment. They have several laundry rooms on the floor that you could go and do your own laundry. A 1-bedroom was going for $2300, and it was very small. They had happy hour, painting, and people painting. I went to the dining facility, and I liked the dining area. I went around 11 o'clock. There were a few people there having late breakfast, but it wasn't like there was alot going on during my tour. The facility is beautiful, very clean, and is awesome.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My sister moved to The Devonshire in Hampton just this month. Compared to where she was, I think she needs a place that's a little smaller and more like home. The staff is really attentive, the ones I've seen so far. They're closed down to visitors so I can't really go every day because of COVID, but they seem to be willing to help, and they are there for her when she needs them. She's in a studio room. She's mostly in a wheelchair, but she's in a room that is very wheelchair friendly. The closet has lower rods to hang clothes on, so she can actually reach it. The bathroom is also minimal for somebody with a wheelchair, so it's perfect for her needs. Their dining room has been closed due to COVID, so they've been bringing the food to the rooms. I believe, as of next week, they're going to open up the dining room again. I know she's played bingo a couple of times there already. Also, before her TV was set up in her room, she went to the activity room to watch TV. They've had a couple of birthdays, too, and people go down to celebrate them, which is nice. Also, if people have to go to doctor appointments, they have transportation for it. I know in better times they actually have outdoor outings, but that's on hold right now. Right now, she's getting physical and occupational therapy, so that's also keeping her busy. They also have a really nice activities director -- she's so outgoing. I think this place is going to be a good fit for her.

Provider Response

We chose The Devonshire for my mom, but she hasn't moved in yet. We chose this facility for her because of its security, the friendliness of staff, it's up-to-date, and the Coronavirus precautions and guidelines. They had activities, from Bible service, bingo, TV nights, movie nights, and game nights. The living atmosphere was good, positive, and family-oriented.

My dad started out independent living and had a pet cat. Most of the cleaning staff refused to clean because of it. He moved to Assisted Living, they made him get rid it despite promising he would not have to. Trying to contact him has been a nightmare. There are no phones or computers for them to use. No return calls when messages are left. Emails have little effect. I know that all he does is sit in his room except for physical therapy and possibly meals. He has no other human interaction which he desperately needs due to his dementia. Oh, and there is no special care for dementia. The room he is in is Tiny.

I like Devonshire the most. The parking lot was clean, but it looked a little outdated. It had a nursing home look on the outside, but the inside was remodeled and the lobby was inviting. The staff was very helpful, very informative, prepared for the tour, and showed us the independent living side. It was handicap accessible including the bathrooms and everything was clean. The dining hall was very fancy. It didn't look gloomy or depressing. Even on the assisted living side, the hallways weren't smelly. We saw attendants in the hallways taking care of the area. I got to meet one of the memory care tenants, and she recognized the staff who was touring me and she had a good rapport with her. I really like it. The independent living residents seemed to love the place as well. I had a very good feel about it.

The Devonshire was very nice and they were remodeling everything including the rooms and the restaurant. My friends who live in their assisted and independent living facilities both love it there and they said the food is good. They have a lot of games, they transport them to doctors' appointments, they have two meals a day, they clean your room once a week, they have a gym, programs, swimming once a week, a library, and a card room.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Recently, during a very challenging period and life-changing transition for a family member, we researched through over a dozen senior living facilities, and we were led to “The Devonshire”. The staff has truly been instrumental with transitioning our family member from independent living and into the assisted living community. They have been so patient and accommodating with walking us through the numerous changes for all of us. We would like to offer a huge “shout-out” for Michelle Peterson: Her professionalism, patience and genuine kindness are always appreciated! She has been generous with her time, while consistently remaining dedicated and fully committed to all of her residents. We have been routinely around senior living facilities for over 9 years now, familiar with over 2 dozen. The Devonshire truly has a “home-like” feeling; it doesn’t feel like “just another facility”. We thank you, The Devonshire staff family! We are a blessed and grateful family.

The Devonshire was my first choice. I had no problem as far as the facility and the people. It was bright and clean and the people there were very welcoming. I saw the people eating, and they seemed to be enjoying it. The rooms were nice and clean, but they didn't have much room for extra stuff. They had the facilities for you to wash your own clothes. They had extra activities and physical therapy. They had the studio, the alcove, and the one-bedroom. The young lady who took me around was excellent. The facility was very nice, light, bright and airy, and clean. There's just not much room for clothing and other stuff.

The Devonshire's apartments were modernized but some weren't and dated to the '80s. Some had recently been renovated. They were all relatively small. They had a restaurant, a room with some books in it, and another room that they used for exercise which had no equipment, just a walker and a chair. There's a little beauty salon which opened when the stylist came in. The people were very pleasant. They had a schedule of activities on the wall. There was a bus to take them to different areas for different things. The chef was very pleasant as was the lady who did the tour. She was very knowledgeable and pleasant.

The staff at The Devonshire was very professional and very friendly. The appearance was very nice, clean, and elegant. We met some of the residents who were very sweet, friendly, and anxious to meet my mother. They had a nice dining room, a salon, on-site physical therapy, interim healthcare that coordinates temporary skilled nursing and home healthcare, a TV room, calendar of events and activities, and a beautiful courtyard. The grounds looked really nice. The apartment Mom will be in is a two-bedroom, two-bath with a kitchen that's been remodelled and updated. It has the wood-look floors and granite-look counters. It's freshly painted and has a walkout patio to the courtyard.

The Devonshire was very nice and there weren't any shortcomings. The person who gave us the tour was very helpful and had all the answers to our questions. The dining area looked good and reminded us of a nice sit-down restaurant. We saw the common areas and the gathering spaces, which looked very comfortable and bright.

I was very impressed with The Devonshire. I was greeted almost the minute I walked in the door by very friendly people. One of them happened to be their chef who was at the front desk and was a very nice gentleman. The lady receptionist was the sweetest she could be. They made me feel welcome. The whole appearance of the building felt clean and neat, friendly, and everything was in place. They had arts and crafts. The lady gave me the activity calendar, and they have so much to do every day of the month. They have kept in touch with me through emails.

I visited The Devonshire. The apartments were roomy, nice, and convenient. The staff was very nice. They had a nice dining room, and the residents were very friendly. They had activities, but not as many as the others. They had a hair salon, washers and dryers on each floor, and excellent security.

The Devonshire Retirement Community could use an update. They had the same problem as far as transportation, which is just twice a week to the doctor. They had a larger menu, and they allowed people to eat a little more, but everyone had to turn up between certain hours to eat, and it is not accommodating; it is not how you treat grown people.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I was impressed with the interaction between the residents and the activities going on at Devonshire. We were given a tour of several different apartments with different arrangements and sizes, and I liked the rooms. Devonshire was older but well-kept, adequate, and modernized. They had a very nice lounge, gazebo, and patio. They allowed us to have a meal, and the food was very good. It was a very well-balanced, hot meal, and we had choices as to what to eat. My relative is happier, socializes more, and enjoys the food. She’s quite pleased with the staff.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

The Devonshire, located in Hampton, Virginia, has been the home to my grandmother for the past 10-15 years. Our family is very close one and as a former middle school principal, my grandmother has a lot of pride and wanted to live in a place that would account for her dignity in achieving so much in her life. Her decision to move to an assisted facility came down to concerns from our family about her living in a large two-story house by herself and at the age of 75, the possibility that she could have a fall down some stairs or accident and nobody would be readily available to come to her aid. Like many people in that situation, nursing homes were a possibility at the beginning, but we felt she was capable of doing things on her own...just simply needed a little guidance. I feel The Devonshire has provided that. With activities such as board games, exercise groups and such, the community has much to offer for new residents to become acclimated. My grandmother's room has a couch, large television, comfortable bed and lounge and bath facilities that are more than adequate. The menu options for residents if they prefer are large and account for any residents with illnesses such as diabetes when creating a personal menu day to day. A courtyard gives residents the ability to chat away from their neighbors and in general, the Hampton area has an old-town feel that is welcoming to guests and family members such as myself who come to visit. If someone were looking at The Devonshire for either themselves or a relative, I would highly recommend it. There is a slight issue with overcrowding, but personal attention is not an issue.
