The activities are endless. Staff are extremely helpful. Food service is outstanding. Living in a cottage with fireplace, great kitchen, even alarm system, huge two car garage, big walking close closet and more.

The Elms is the highest level of memory care at Abbotswood. We were fairly happy with her level of care in assisted living, but we are so very disappointed in memory care. They are seemingly understaffed. Many of the staff working loiter around on their cell phones. We do not feel our mother’s needs are being met. We have conferred with other resident family members who are equally concerned. The facility itself is nice, and the food is good, but the care is minimal in a very needy population of residents.

Abbotswood at Irving Park was somewhat upscale. The people were very friendly. I saw the peple who lived there speaking with each other and to the staff members. It was a very friendly place. It made me feel positive about it. The staff who assisted me with the tour was quite outstanding. I had a list of questions. She hit every question and answered it before I even had a chance to ask. She followed up afterwards with phone calls. I have to say, I was quite impressed. You can hire in-home care to come into the facility, if you're independent living. They try to keep people at the highest level as long as possible. It was very impressive to me because I had not seen any place do that. I would most definitely live there myself. They had excellent meal plans and various levels of plans. They can accommodate vegetarians, so I feel quite positive about all that. They had a whole calendar of activities, and they also took the residents once a week to a grocery store and banks in the area.

My father moved into Abbotswood at Irving Park. The facility was very clean when I went in. You didn't smell the urine smell that you smell in a lot of places. The nurse-to-patient ratio was very low. There are only about 15 or 25 people in a group, so my dad gets more attention. They give us a calendar for every month of the activities that they do. They have sing-alongs, movie theme days, and bingo. My dad's room is nice. He's in a room by himself with a nice, large bathroom, and a large area for furniture. He has enough space for a bed, a couch, a recliner, a table, and a dresser. So it's a pretty nice-sized room. Since he's been there, he's been eating pretty well. The staff that I've met and talked with are very, very nice. They seem to be very patient with him and work well with him. It's a little bit more expensive than I would have liked, but for what I'm paying for it, it's worth it.

We toured Abbotswood at Irving Park. We toured the whole facility. So the way they explained it, even with assisted living, it was the same. It just depended on the amount of care that my mom would need. It was nice and welcoming. It kind of looked like an assisted living facility, but it was still nice and clean. It was a warm feeling. The staff we saw and met were nice and friendly. The dining room was clean, nice. It was somewhere I would feel comfortable sitting and eating in. We saw the room that they were renovating and we saw one empty room. They were nice, nice space, and clean. They celebrate all the holidays. I like that it wasn't just bland, like a nursing home. It's just like how it would be at your own home. They had a salon. I liked the fact that they had different levels of care. They even have in their community, independent living, like they have little cottages where people live. So it's like you can transition from, say, like the cottages, if you want, move over into the assisted living community, or memory care.

We went to Abbotswood at Irving Park. I liked that they divide the memory care into two different sections from middle Alzheimer's and then ones that are really at the end stages. They divide those two groups, which is very nice. The place just didn't feel right for our mother. It was large, and we kind of steer away from the large assisted living kind of places. They have a big activity room. They only take in like 13 people or something, but it's still very large. They have a really nice outdoor area too. Everybody there was good, friendly, and helpful. It all looks very new and nice. It has a large cafeteria area with nice seating, booths and everything. There's a beautiful outdoor area to sit in, and it was larger than most places I've seen. The rooms were nice. They offer rooms that have their own shower in them, and it's really nice. We were on the high-functioning side of memory care. Many memory care facilities have one area to shower and everybody basically uses that. My mother's fairly high functioning still and she takes her own baths and does stuff on her own. It was really nice that you could get a room there that had its own shower and a bathroom in it. I heard it was the only place in the state that divides the memory care area. Some people in memory care facilities end up being in wheelchairs and are at the end of life. It's hard to be pretty high functioning and be surrounded by a lot of people like that. You kind of feel like you're in a nursing home, so I really liked that about Abbotswood.
