I liked my tour. I liked that the people there were very nice, it was very clean, and to me, it was surprisingly very quiet being in the middle of the city. It's no big deal, but the one thing I didn't care for was that there's no traffic light at all at the entrance, so it would be hard to get in and out because there's a lot of traffic in that area. I liked this place the most out of those I've toured. The lady that I spoke with was very, very nice, she took the time to talk to me and asked me questions. They had a lot of amenities and they had a lot of different things. They had music, a garden, and a barbershop, and they were nice.

It was being renovated, so the building was lovely. We talked to the social director and the salesperson, and they were nice and accommodating. The kitchen was a real negative. There was hardly one. It was just a little tiny refrigerator with no stove, but the rooms had balconies and we liked that. The grounds were lovely. It's a park-like setting. The craft room and the other rooms though seemed a little tucked away and small.

It looked like a pretty nice place. The rooms were really small. I cannot remember the activities or amenities that they had. They have a salon and all that. They offer three meals. The place is clean.

I went on a tour. The young lady took me and showed me all the amenities inside. With it being in the country and it being older, you can tell that it certainly needed updating. They didn't have a washer or dryer, nor a stove. They only had a little refrigerator. They had a little bus that would take you places, but overall it costs too much money. They accept pets. I didn't like the apartment that the staff showed me. The patio was very rundown and there was rust on it. It didn't appeal to me at all. They definitely needed an update. What they offer you for the money wasn't worth it. The staff was very personable, but she was a little too pushy for me. I know she was being nice because that was just her personality, but she was really trying hard to sell me the place. For the money that they were charging, they didn't have as much to offer as the other two places did. I wouldn't be happy living there. I didn't like it. It was too old and too far away from everything. They need to update, remodel, and get full-size appliances in there.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father is here, and it's been a good experience. It's a little complicated just because my father has dementia, so he'd eventually need to be in assisted living, but this seems to be working for now. I like that they provide meals, and that they provide the rides to doctors' appointments on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. I wish that they provided rides on more flexible days and times, though, because my father sleeps late, so Tuesday and Thursday mornings are kind of hard. I wish they did more community stuff, but Emily is great, and everybody else is OK. The residents play bingo there, and the facility is older, but it's clean.

It was OK. I think it would be a pleasant place to live, it wasn't bad at all. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, I would just rate them very high. The rooms were good too. I looked at a one-bedroom with a balcony, and a two-bedroom with a balcony. They were both very acceptable and I would not have any objection with living in one of those. I stuck my head through a window there and saw the dining area. It looked very clean and it looked like they'd be able to do a good job with that. They also have activities, card tables, exercise room, bingo games, they have a five-acre outdoor walking park with trails. They take scheduled trips on tour buses and local transportation to local events and shopping and so forth. They have musical groups come in two to three times a week to give short concerts, and they have karaoke every week or so. So they have an adequate activity schedule.

Manor at Steeplechase is very nice but dated as far as furnishing. It's probably maybe 18 years old and not really updated. The person who toured me was very helpful and nice. The place looked OK inside.

It was a very nice facility, with very nice people, but it cost $3,500 to move in. I met with the marketing doctor/facility manager. They were holding a birthday party for all the residents who had birthdays that month. It's a very clean facility and they have undergone some improvements. It's good looking from the outside. The actual apartments have a great layout, and they're a little bit bigger than the other place I saw. I met with the manager of food services and they do a very good job. They have a chef who's very outgoing, very accommodating, and a real pleasure to talk to. After I investigated a lot of things that are going on, their programs, and everything relating to the Holiday Corporation, the ability to go to other facilities, and utilizing their benefits programs, at the end of the day, it's just too far away and the cost too high. That area has a higher income level, so it's expected that if you're putting your parents or your loved ones in that facility, you have that kind of money to spend. It's probably the most expensive program out of all the facilities that we toured and reviewed.

Mom has been living there for about three weeks. It is attractive, the staff is friendly, and her apartment is very nice. They serve three meals a day and they have transportation to doctor's appointments. They have games, outside music, trips, and shopping. They provide housekeeping, a beauty shop, a fitness room, a chapel, and an activity room. She's very happy there.

Manor at Steeplechase was a very nice community, but they only offered apartment style. We live in a 1-story duplex right now, and they didn’t offer that. They didn’t have a garage, and we have a garage; they didn’t offer washers and dryers, we have that; they didn’t offer a kitchen, we have that. But then again, it was apartments. So they wanted you to use the dining room and the meals were included with the rent; that was fine because these are not included where we are now. The thing that really made a negative for us was the fact that there was no kitchen literally. They said there was a kitchenette, and what that involved was a very small sink and a counter top and that was it; there was no cooking facility whatsoever. And what they wanted for a smaller 2-bedroom was well over $1,500 more a month than what we are paying right now. They turned around and said they were going to have a unit opening, which was a manager’s unit, and it does have a full kitchen, but we couldn’t get in to see it because it was occupied by the manager at that time. They said that they will let us know when that opens up, and they sent me an email saying that the 2-bedroom manager’s facility is open and, if we are interested, it is only $5,600 a month. I am only paying $2,300 a month right now for what I got. Do you want me to move in for $5,600 and all I get is the kitchen while I am losing the garage, a lot of floor space, and a bedroom? I realized the cost of living is higher there, but I just thought $5,600 was insane. The manager there was incredibly helpful and incredibly friendly. We just drove in and then said, “Hey, we want to look,” and she jumped right on it, “C’mon let’s go.” The people were excellent; there was no problem there. It was just the cost which we thought was way too expensive compared to what we are paying now.

I visited and liked it very much. It was probably the best. I had three or four meals there because they invited me to stay for a meal every time I went, and the food was very good. They were very helpful and very nice. The rooms were very nice, and the place was very clean. All of the employees were very nice and helpful. However, recently, when I was going over there and checking things out, I found out that they weren't going to have someone there all night anymore. That troubled me a little bit. I like everything else.

I feel like the people are very friendly and welcoming to my parents. The director that we deal with is very helpful with all of our concerns and questions. It is also near my mom's sister. My parents will be moving this week. The activities that they offer stands out. They have exercise classes, bible studies, and excursions to different locations. They seem to have a lot going on for the residents. However, I think the facility itself needs to be updated.

It’s beautiful. It’s gorgeous. I like the setting and the overall appearance of it. The staff was very nice. I like the activities going on. I just like the overall atmosphere of it. It looked like a very active retirement tower. There were all kinds of activities going on -- everything from men playing pool, to people reading in the library and exercising in the exercise room. It was just a very active place.

If I had to make a choice of the ones I visited, I would definitely choose Manor at Steeplechase. The feel, the way the staff approaches you, and their programs, they just make you feel like you are part of their family. It's just the most wonderful feeling in the whole world. It's clean, and the food was delicious; I've been there many times for lunch. Their programs were nice. Even the residents that I met seemed happy and liked it really well. There was only one lady that had a complaint, that if you're looking for a man, you won't find it here.

It has plenty of activities. The rooms are fairly comfortable and large, but I can't compare it to a house. The apartments are fairly spacious. It had plenty of room for a couple. It had the kitchenette, and you could have either a one-bedroom, a two-bedroom, or a studio. Being in independent living, you could have something that would allow you to walk out from your room to the patio. They are located in a good area of town, and the sanitation is fine. One of the things with Holiday Retirement is what they offer. They have over 300 places in the US. If you want to go to any place they have, you can go and stay at any place they have for a week with no extra charge. It's great because you can take a vacation if you want to go out to the West Coast or to Florida. As long as they have an opening, you could probably do that several times a year.

I like that it would be giving me the things that I need or want. It has more rooms and they were okay. You get whatever you pay for. I like that they also have lighter halls; just very nice. I love the dining area as well as the menu. They serve good meals a day and that was very nice.

The staff was very informative. They showed us the room and what's available. They invited us for lunch and set us up with two other people who were living there as residents, so we asked them a bunch of questions. They were very nice. The food was good, and we enjoyed the visit. The room we saw was a little bit small and more like an apartment type living. I was taken a aback by that because we were looking at independent living, so I was assuming that the space was a little bit larger. But the place was very nice. They had a room where people were playing cards, I think they also had a library, and a workout room with two or three machines that you could get on, like a treadmill. It didn't look like they had a whole lot of activities going on, but maybe it was just the time of the day. They maybe plan those outside. They had a beautiful dining room. It looked like a nice place if you can afford it. If you like a smaller room and can live with that. We were not turned on by the size of it. Most of our furniture wouldn't even fit there, and we know we have to downgrade.

It was wonderful. The facility was a stellar. It was very convenient to my house and proximity was very important to me. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They answered all of my questions. Some even gave me suggestions on whom to follow-up with because my dad was a vet and had VA insurance and they were very helpful with my questions on that. The dining was very lucrative and they could have socialization. But if they liked to eat in their own room for privacy, that could do that too. I liked that could do his physical therapy there and that his emotion, spiritual and all of his needs could be met also. If he had a need that couldn't be met, like if he needed a VA doctor, they had transportation for that. What stands out to me was the safety issue. My dad was a big fall risk because he had a stroke and his balance was really bad. The fact that he would be safe there and if he fell, he could get help and the fact the he could socialized. They had activities like football games and bingo. I liked that everything that he would need was right there in one facility. I wished my dad would go there and I would recommend them to others.

It was a very nice place. Their staff was cordial and very helpful. They have very nice little apartments and each apartment has a balcony or a patio. To me, that's helpful because residents are able to go out and enjoy fresh air. The price was about the same to the other facility. The only problem with it is its location. It is right in the middle of a business area that is congested and traffic situation there is just unpleasant.
