I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad moved into Holiday Mallard Point. I like the community inclusion part. Everybody seemed happy. When we revisit, all the other residents are very happy and active in the activities that are planned. The staff was wonderful. The food was great, which is a key thing. So to have three well-balanced meals included was wonderful. The staff members are very helpful, bubbly, happy, and friendly. They need a freight elevator. It was kind of difficult to get things in that were larger than what the passenger elevator was, and that's the only issue that I had. Every day, there's a ton of activity. My dad has been kind of a recluse for the last few years, and he's getting involved. He's going to some of the activities, like a tailgate party he participated in. It's bringing him out of his shell, so there are activities all the time.

I visited this facility

Holiday Mallard Point is an older and smaller facility. It was very well kept up and clean. Everything was painted and looked very nice. They had a microwave and a small refrigerator. I felt welcomed. They were having some kind of afternoon party, and they invited me to stay. They had strawberry shortcake, which was excellent, and quite a few of the people that lived there were there. The chef came out and served it. He was a nice and personable young man. Everybody was so friendly and welcoming. The staff who assisted me was a very outgoing gentleman. He was very enthusiastic about the facility. You automatically get three meals a day included in your rent.

My experience at Holiday Mallard Point was very good. I think they offer probably the most for the money of any place that I considered. They offer a lot of features that I couldn't get anywhere else. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The dining area is very efficient. I've eaten there three or four times now, and the food is very good. The unit that I am moving into has been completely remodeled since the last occupant moved out. They have a lot of daily activities of different types. They have trips. They have games that they play. It's like there's always something going on. I will have a very nice patio, so that I'm going to be able to maintain a container garden, which is important to me. I will also have a large backyard actually.

I liked Holiday Mallard Point's location. It was more in an open residential kind of area and I liked the overall feel of it when you walk in. I liked its accessibility to activities, rooms, and different parts of the building. The person that did the tour was personable. I felt comfortable with him. He was very welcoming and not overly chatty. He was a knowledgeable guy. They had a beauty salon, a library, different rooms where families can gather, laundry, a chapel (I especially liked that for mom), and balconies. The rooms with the balconies overlooked more of a quiet nature kind of area. So, that was a big plus.

The rooms at Holiday Mallard Point were bigger than the ones I saw in another facility. I liked this facility. They provided three meals a day and snacks. The staff was very friendly. They treated me like I was important and introduced me to the residents there. It was just a good experience. They had a beauty shop and an exercise room. They do bingo, exercises, and all types of things.

I toured Holiday Mallard Point. I like the shower stall, and I like the closet space. I like the beauty and spa shop, the library, the little chapel, and the Bible study. The rooms are very nice with good window views. It's a very busybody place. People are active and moving about and social. I saw their independent living, but I believe I need assisted living. The staff were very good.

We were drawn to Mallard Point and the first step inside seemed like home. We have been here for two months and have observed much of the qualities. Management has done an excellent job. The staff and servers are caring for each individual needs. Food and beverages are very good and are of great quality and variety. The facility could use some updating but overall we feel it is our home. This is peace for us.

I've been in Holiday Mallard Point for two months now. My experience has been very unique for most senior areas. The staff is awesome, the people are friendly, and I felt very welcomed. The staff members are outstanding, the business manager, the activity director, etc. They are a rare combination to find. You don't find them very often. We have meals in the dining hall, and the food is good. The overall area is extremely clean. Everything is freshly painted with new carpet down. They're very adequate sized apartments to meet our needs. I have a one-bedroom apartment with a kitchenette. There are all kinds of activities. I participate in beanbag baseball, Wii bowling, bingo, and Kings Corner. You could be as busy as you want to be or not be because you're not pressured, but there are a lot of activities. This was highly recommended to me.

I'm in Holiday Mallard Point and it's been very good. I have lived here for five years now. I have never had any problems with anything. The staff that we have is excellent. The office staff is great. The activity director does a very good job. The manager and the assistant manager have both been here for three years or more and are very capable. We have Wii bowling, we have a game called Putt for Fun, which is golf, we do beanbag baseball, we do arts and crafts, we do exercise programs, and we just had a real good music program at noon today. They feed us three meals a day. The food in general is usually very good. Our building is getting older. We have a lot of things going wrong. Right now, our elevator is not working well. We could use some upgrades. We could use new carpets and some of the apartments need new cupboards, that kind of stuff. I'm getting my money's worth.

My grandma lives at Mallard Point. She was so excited telling me about the Iowa vs. Iowa State football tailgate party that was held in the atrium with many people in attendance. She put on her Iowa shirt and cheered on “her” Hawkeyes while waving her pom pom. The food and beverages at the party were a hit! It is fun hearing Grandma talk about the activities (art projects, Bingo, putt-putt golf), friendships, and how much she enjoys her apartment with weekly housekeeping provided. She absolutely loves the on-site beauty shop for her hair care, pedicures, and manicures. Since she no longer drives, she appreciates the bus service so she can go shopping. Grandma loves Mallard Point’s community of retired seniors living independently under one roof. She feels safe at Mallard Point and that makes me happy.

The room that I toured at Mallard Point was smaller than I wanted, but Donald, the director, was very helpful. The dining center and their menus looked very good. Then they have a beauty shop (which is important to my mom) and different activities. It was very, very clean and located fairly close to our home.

Mallard Point is the best kept secret for independent senior living in the Cedar Falls-Waterloo area. While touring the retirement community with our 87 year old loved one, she immediately said Mallard Point was the place for her. Within 2 weeks she moved in, unpacked, and is now settled. It was a great sense of relief for her and our family knowing she in now in a safe, secure environment surrounded by friendly, kind, and compassionate retirees. The entire Mallard Point team consisting of administration, recreation, maintenance, transportation, food service, and housekeeping has been personal, professional, and top-notch. Knowing our loved one has three balanced meals daily, scheduled recreational activities, weekly housekeeping services, and transportation for shopping and appointments has left her happy and pleased with her decision about moving to Mallard Point. Being matched with an ambassador (aka – welcoming committee) put her mind at ease since she was the new kid on the block. Ambassadors took her under their wing the first few weeks with respect and graciousness. The monthly price is affordable as she only pays for internet service and cell phone. Having lived in the Cedar Falls-Waterloo area for almost 40 years, we are content knowing our loved one is in great hands at Mallard Point – an amazing retirement community tucked away on a well maintained campus in a residential neighborhood.

My co-worker's mother lives at Mallard Point. I put my mom in touch with her mother, and my mom had a long conversation with her, and that's what made her final decision. They've been very friendly with me and helpful so far. I haven't had any issues at all. As far as my mother says, everything is fine. From what I hear, the food is excellent. I'd seen a bunch of people playing Wii bowling with the TV, and I said, "Hey, you guys are all bowling, no smoking, no drinking, you're just having a good time." With the COVID situation going on, I think they're doing the best that they can. I'm sure they're gonna do more in the future once COVID lets up. The facility was very nice. Price was comparable in looking at all the places. With what they're providing and everything, their price may be a little on the higher side of average, but not bad.

My father-in-law is a resident at Mallard Point in Cedar Falls. We've had limited visits since he moved in. We had to go through a screening process, of course, and they've had a couple of lockdowns since then. He seems to really like it there, so far, so good. When he moved from his own home, he was kind of not excited about making the move so we're pretty pleased that for the most part, he likes where he's at now. He doesn't like the lockdowns, of course, but he seems to be doing okay. I know they go to the lunch room for meals but he said they are spread so far apart and can't even visit because they're too far apart so he doesn't do that now. Other than that, I'm not sure that he's doing any other activities right now until some of those restrictions are lifted. I think it's a beautiful facility but it's expensive.

My father enjoys Mallard Point, and he's made some new friends. They're very caring people, and he's glad he made the move. The food is very good. They serve it in portions, and they have waiters. He loves his room. It's a downsize for him, but it's a lot more room than he thought he would have, and he's very comfortable there. Almost every morning, there's a game going down in the lobby, from beanbag toss to golf putting game. They get a lot of participation from the residents. They've got pool tables and exercise machines.

Thank you for your review, Steve. We are glad to hear that your father is enjoying all the benefits of the Mallard Point lifestyle!

We're planning to move into Mallard Point. The rooms were nice. The one-bedrooms were close to 565 square feet. The model room that they showed us was furnished nicely, and we were impressed. It's in an area that is nice and quiet, off of a main traveled street, but far enough off that you don't have a lot of traffic noise. The dining area was huge and they serve three meals a day there. They have an exercise room and bible study several times a week. We saw a number of people in the exercise class. They have a library and there's a grand piano in the dining room. It's reasonable.

Mallard Point is very nice and very well kept up. I have no complaints. My father seems to get along real good with everybody. Somebody comes and cleans his room once a week. The food is good and they wait on you. He's real happy there. I was down there the other day when they had Mardi Gras and they were fixing iced drinks and margaritas in the lobby. It's very good. The staff is all very good. It's an excellent place. He enjoys it. They have a lot of activities going on, but he hasn't participated in a lot.

Mallard Point is a really nice place. My siblings and I spoke to some residents who said they really like it there. They showed us the calendar of all the different activities they have available. They have a shuttle bus that runs in the morning that takes you to Walgreens, the casino, or doctors' appointments, which comes first. And if it's not available to take you, they will get you a taxi and pay for it. They wanted us to come back and bring our dad so we can try the lunch. They have a menu with the chef's specialty, and there's a healthy lunch where you can choose 3 different entrees. If you miss your lunch, they always have a table with snacks and fruits, and in the morning they have donuts and breakfast bars. They only have independent living and they have comfortable chairs that you can rent. They would set it up and charge you every 15 minutes, the VA would cover most of that if you are a veteran.

We have selected Mallard Point. For our area, the price was competitive with everyone else. The meals look decent. It has plenty of things to do for my parents. It is a nice, secure place, and that is important. We feel comfortable coming and going out of there. Also, my parents can go outside and just enjoy being outside.

Mallard Point is no place I’d want to live. For one thing, I didn’t like the food, because I ate there, and I didn’t like how they served it. I didn’t care for the way they treated me when I went there, either. I just don’t have a whole lot of love for the place. I was there at meal time because I was told to be there at 12:30, and we didn’t get our food until 1:30, which is too long for anybody to sit and wait for a meal. And I don’t know what their excuse was because I didn’t care. I wasn’t there to critique them; I just wanted to be there to see how it operated, and I found out.

Provider Response

Hi Visitor147310, we appreciate you taking the time to respond. The staff at Mallard Point take our reviews very seriously, and your feedback is an integral part of that. we appreciate you pointing out it's a nice place, but are very sorry to hear the experience you had. It sounds like we would do better next time to better communicate that folks tend to enjoy arriving a bit early for mealtimes to choose the table they'd like to sit at, drink some coffee, and chat with friends, either old or new. We are so sorry we seem to have missed the mark this time around, but would encourage you to come back and visit anytime - you are always welcome here! Thank you!!

My in-laws lived at Mallard Point, and it was a very nice place. It was five minutes away from us, the staff was pretty decent and caring, and the rooms were very nice. There was no kitchen, but they have the dining hall for the meals. The pricing is a little bit steep.

The sales representative at Mallard Point, Darnell, was excellent. He has a great way with people in general, especially old people, and was very believable. What he said turned out to be true, so that was a plus. The managers were very open, welcoming, and not pushy. They had a lot of accommodations to show my parents around and let them see the inside of the apartments, which were very open, cheerful, and very nice. We were impressed. The location is great. If I had to find one fault, I would say the parking is a little limited. My parents are not social people. They don’t get out a lot, but they have activities there that they have taken part in. They have started to enjoy being drawn out a little bit by different people and things. I think the staff has done a good job at doing that. My parents just moved in last month.

Mallard Point was clean and well lit. I walked in the hallway with the representative, and there was a smell of smoke. I thought I saw one room that had a machine outside it, like it was trying to get rid of the smoke. The people that he addressed as we were making our walk-through all seemed very friendly to him, and him back to them. One lady said she wanted to talk to him, and he said, "I will come back to see you," and he looked at his watch and said a time. So, I was really impressed with that because I was a social worker.

Mallard Point is reasonably priced compared to everywhere else I tried, and you don't have to sign a long-term lease or anything. You can just give 30-day notice and change if you want to. They are very helpful, and they feed you very well and too much. In fact, I have to use some will power. Yes, I would recommend it. They've got a lot of activities. They had a movie yesterday, and they go on shopping trips.

The thing that impressed my children about Mallard Point was the fact that if I wanted to go on vacation to where my grandchildren are, if they have a facility like them in that area, I can go to that one and stay for a few days. They have that share thing from state to state, if you want to go visit some place, you can rent or stay in one of their smaller show apartments while you're there. Your family also has that benefit, and they can run for a certain amount of money during the time that they're staying. You can do your own laundry there or they can do it for you. They also have someone come in help you once a week if you need it. You have three meals a day provided for you. You have your choice of one-bedroom or a condo either in the huge facility or separately across from the main eating areas. They also have condos where you can have your own garage if you want to. It's in a really nice area where they have a walking park close by where you can exercise if you want to. They also have a van to take you to your appointments or take you shopping and bring you back. It's very clean and nicely laid out. They have several rooms for exercising, watching movies, pool room, and gaming. They help you move into another apartment where you get complete care if that's what's needed at a later time.

We don’t live too far away from Mallard Point, and we will be going to that facility. We just liked the place where we are going to stay; the apartment has a big living room, two bedrooms, and two baths. They are very nice people, and this is the third year that we’ve gone there. The dining area is nice with new carpets. They can play cards, there are some games like dominos, and they have entertainment usually every Friday or Saturday. This is a really nice place.

I liked the whole setup of Mallard Point. The staff was not unfriendly, but they were just not over the top, so to speak. I didn't really get to check their meals too much, or the things that they have available for activities, but I would say they have a good variety of those kinds of things too. They had a Wii, and they do Wii bowling that they schedule sometimes for tournaments, card games that they get together to play, and jigsaw puzzles that they work on together, and that was kind of impressive. I wasn't there long enough to know if they were understaffed or not, but it does seem like they had less staff.

I couldn't ask for better care for my Mother who has some dementia than what she has at Mallard Point. The food is excellent. The management couldn't be better! She has the feeling of independence, but the safety of the Mallard community! The activities are endless and made for all types of personalities and needs. The nursing staff is also excellent. The facility is very nice!
