I visited this facility

Wesley Des Moines was lovely. I liked that all of the apartments that we saw were brand new, and they were spaced beautifully. They had lovely ceilings. And they had a church there on site, which was just lovely. They had a snack bar on the premises. It was just neat, and I liked it. The staff who gave us the tour was very helpful and let us make decisions. She didn't do a big sale. She introduced us to the place and then let us make decisions and pointed out some of the things. She didn't push, and I liked that. You could have your meals there. Each unit that we saw had a complete kitchen, which appealed to me. They had a lovely organ that had been donated. They were going to build a pool, which I believe is under construction now, for water aerobics. They had a lot of activities for men, like woodworking and that sort of thing. It was just a complete package of retirement needs. The only thing we didn't know until after we looked was that it was a buy-in. The fees were not mentioned so much, or perhaps we didn't do our homework.

I am/was a resident of this facility

We moved in to an 1800+ sq ft 3 bedroom apartment (the biggest they have) in the new Garden building 30 March 2023. We are both 78 years old and used to living independently. Our reason for selling our house and moving was to guard against the eventuality of a health crisis that forces the move at a time when we were least prepared to do it. The apartment is beautiful, new and very functional. The kitchen is better than the one we had in our 4 bedroom house. The staff is friendly and helpful and the people we have met are friendly and personable but we find we are some of the youngest people in the building and do not have much in common with our neighbors. One of our major objectives was to meet and get to know people our own age and so far, that has been difficult. The dining room hours run 4PM to 7Pm and the vast majority of people eating in the dining room are finished by 6:15PM. We seldom find anyone to eat with between 6-7PM. Our biggest disappointment is the food. It is not bad but if you got this food in a restaurant, you would not return. It is everyday ordinary, nothing special. We find we eat a few meals a week, go out at least once and cook 2-3 times. We often use our meal points in the Bistro for lunch. We expected a lot better for $8,800 a month. $650 of that is for the second person so at best, they are budgeting $20 a day per person for food. Food tends to be bland and we often add our own spices and flavorings. Soups are very good but salads are consistently forgettable. We hope to meet some people who share our common interests and we have made sure that management knows how disappointed we are with the food but we plan to stay. It is a nice place in spite of its shortcomings.

I visited this facility

We found Wesley Des Moines. It's close to our doctors and the area that we're familiar with. It had a lot of activity and everything going for it. They all seemed great. We just liked the location of it. We tried the food. It was lunch time, and we just had a sandwich. We're planning to move when there's a spot available that is what we want.

This facility is NOT consistently checking visitors for Covid vaccination proof, nor is it requiring masks. This lack of attention to mandates puts all of its residents at risk. Shameful.

We chose Wesley Homes Des Moines for Mom. They give her lots of opportunities, lots of good care, and oversight. They have a good library, social activities like board games, Bingo, and excursions. They also have their own activities on the site as well, like little fairs and family days. I like the food. It's well prepared, healthy, and there's a good variety. They have the full range of care, from independent living, all the way up to nursing care. The staff is very well organized and competent. They have the widest range of activities of all the facilities I've seen. It's such a large facility.

My mom was in independent living in Wesley Homes Des Moines. Her apartment was really nice, and they had quite a few activities. I would say that the food is average, but my mom didn't enjoy the food as much as she does at her current community. They had everything that I can think of, like a library, gym, and a bistro if you don't want to go to the dining room. It was not as friendly as the other senior place, but it was very clean and well maintained, and everything was upgraded. They're really good on maintenance. It's a huge facility with beautiful flowers and rose gardens, and the grounds were impeccable. There were places to walk and wheel around and a gardener kept it up.

I visited this facility

Wesley Homes Des Moines had a very impressive setting, and I liked the fact that it was a real community with units where you can live independently. It also had assisted living and memory care -- the whole shebang. It had substantial grounds overlooking a beautiful scenery of the inlet from the Pacific Ocean.

Mom lived at Wesley Homes for four years. The building was getting kind of old, but the people there were very nice. They had a wider variety of activities for their 400 residents in two buildings. The food was okay.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My grandmother was a resident in The Arbor of Wesley Homes and she stayed there for several months prior to her passing. The staff at Wesley homes was very helpful and caring especially those in the Arbor. My grandmother enjoyed the atmosphere and the fact that she was able to still have freedom and be a part of activities. She was able to socialize when she wanted, or just stay in her room if that is what she chose to do. We enjoyed the fact that we knew she was safe and should a problem arise staff was there to care for her needs. It was particularly nice to know that while she had a kitchen unit the stove could be turned off while she was alone, but back on while we visited. Prior to grandmother's passing the Arbor arraigned for everything from a pastor coming to a grief counselor for us. I cannot say enough about how much we loved this facility and would recommend it to anyone with a loved one needing extra care.
