We like everything at Maria Joseph continuing care (Meadows at Maria Joseph Manor). They have little cottages in different sizes that are available. They have assisted living facility and a nursing home when you need it. However, you will start out with the little cottages. They have a lot of activities. They have a library, videos and game tables. You can eat three meals a day in their community center or you can just eat your meals in your cottage if you want. We have a cousin that lives there, and she is very happy. The food is excellent. The people are very friendly. They know what will be going on for the month because they put out a newsletter that lists all the activities, and introduces new members to the community.

I am a friend or relative of resident
My Father passed in 3/2011. He was one of the first residents and videoed the development of the Meadows. He and my Mother moved in and spent the rest of their lives there. My Mother passed, but Dad continued on, being as active as possible until the last several months of his life. I can not compliment the Sisters, the nurses, assistants and staff enough. I drove from Massachusetts, my sister from Chicago to be with him during his last few days. EVERYONE could not have been more caring until his body finally gave him up at age 90. Having been raised Catholic, the Sisters gave never a mind. He was a proud, caring man and was treated as such and contributed much of his time and efforts to the community as a whole. I have read the previous submissions and find them, at the time of my Father's passing to be untimely and, at present, uninformed.

My grandmother lived at the Meadows for almost 20 years. The staff and assistance were beyond wonderful. As her health declined through the years, they were always there to assist, whether it was after a fall, making sure nursing was arranged, running errands, or just helping with a task in the home. Later, when my grandmother could no longer care for herself, she moved over to Emmanuel nursing home for the past few years. Nursing homes are always iffy, but we were lucky in her primary nurse made sure she was comfortable. When she moved from her home in the Meadows, Maria Joseph Manor took care of all the furnishings (we took what we and my grandmother wanted), so that made it so much less stressful since we did not live close by. My grandmother passed away last weekend at age 97. There was a nurse there, holding her hand, at the end. We were notified promptly. All in the family are quite grateful for having Meadows and Maria Joseph Manor there for us and her. Now, the older building, Maria Joseph Manor, has since been updated, so earlier reviews (prior to 2014) may not reflect that facility's actual condition. I suggest as with all things to simply visit for yourself.

The facility is pretty large and has a lot of residents. My grandmother had lived in a much nicer facility before, but due to lack of funds, she moved to Maria Joseph. It was definitely a step down (or more). The place was outdated, dark, and always smelled very strongly of urine and filth. Her room was small and unimpressive. My grandmother also had to share a room towards the end of her stay. The staff was very friendly, but that doesn't make up for the major lacking in comfort and cleanliness. When I think about getting old myself, I fear living in a place like Maria Joseph. I wish I could have helped my grandmother live somewhere she deserved. For families on a budget, it's not horrible- it's just not the best.
