The Gardens at Newbury Court is a really nice place. The rooms are spacious. They have a fine dining room. They have places to walk around outside. They also have activities inside that are appropriate for their residents. They would show movies on a big screen TV. It is a very nice facility for my wife. Unfortunately, they don't accept MassHealth. I still would recommend this place though.
My mother moved into Newbury Court, an assisted living facility, a year and a half ago. Every time I visit and spend time there, I feel so good that my mother is in such a friendly, warm, supportive and also calming place.
My mother has dementia; it was mild when she moved in, but has progressed. I find the staff there incredibly respectful and reassuring for someone like her who has been under a lot of stress because of her move there and her increasing memory issues. They also have stepped up care for people with dementia and Alzheimers.
There are activities -- some for which residents leave the premises and visit a museum or go to a garden. There are also regular in-house activities like bridge and exercise classes. These are really important for someone like my mother who is having trouble feeling connected socially because of her memory issues and because she is in a new place and living alone for the first time in 50 years (my father died about a year before she moved in).
One improvement would be to work on making it less isolating for people. This could be done through a mentor system or small social gatherings or organized dinners for small groups.
The food is excellent and you can eat in the dining room or take your meal back to your room.
Of course, the one real down side is that it is expensive. You have to pay a downpayment (although you get 90% back regardless of how long you stay) and then there is also a steep monthly fee.
