Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Palm Coast

  • Florida is one of the most tax-friendly states in the country for retirees. Not only does Florida have no state income tax, but it doesn’t tax any form of retirement income, including pensions, IRAs, 401(k)s and Social Security. Florida doesn’t have an estate tax or inheritance tax, either. On the downside, Palm Coast has a higher-than-average sales tax of 7%, but this tax doesn’t apply to groceries, medication and many other essentials.
  • The cost of living in Palm Coast is about 3.4% lower than the national average. Housing costs in the area are particularly affordable, coming in at 7.2% less than those found in a typical U.S. city. Palm Coast also has cheaper-than-average utility costs, while health care, groceries and transportation all cost right at the national average.
  • Palm Coast’s violent crime rate index is 26.3, slightly higher than the national average of 22.7. The property crime index of 49.7 is significantly higher than the national index of 35.4. That said, assisted living facilities use safety measures such as security staff, surveillance cameras, alarms and single points of entry. These reinforcements shield residents from much of the crime in the area.
  • Palm Coast has year-round warm weather, with daily high temperatures averaging 66 degrees in January and 90 in July. While heavy rain is common during the summer months, winters tend to be dry, and snowfall in the city is almost nonexistent.
  • The air quality in Palm Coast ranks at 68 out of 100, which is 10 points better than the national average of 58. The city’s respiratory illness and cancer risks are significantly lower than the state and national averages.
  • Public transportation in Palm Coast is limited. However, Flagler County Public Transportation (FCPT) makes a concerted effort to reach out to seniors in need, providing door-to-door service from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and limited service between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturdays.
