I visited this facility

I toured Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington and they were pretty decent but they didn't have a vacant apartment. We saw a couple of rooms that people were living in and were furnished but they had several options for either shared rooms or single rooms. If they had an opening we would have picked them. The staff was great. They had a courtyard. They have a lunch room and a couple of private rooms so you can have a little privacy.

I recently became a guardian for a friend. Due to memory issues he is not able to live on his own any longer. I toured a few facilities and decided on Sunrise because when visiting the memory care side of the facility, the residents in Sunrise were much more engaged and happy then in other facilities. My friend is still active and needs the engagement and interaction that I saw at Sunrise.

I chose Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington for my brother. It's convenient. It was well taken care of. It was airy. The people there, or at least the person I spoke to there, Chris, were very helpful. The rooms were adequate. They were empty, so it didn't matter, the ones that I saw. Many people that I met were very nice, but I only met a few because it was a quick tour. I was looking more for the kind of place it was, the kind of room it was, and their knowledge of long-term insurance if they had handled it, or if they knew how to handle it. At that point, my main concern was their knowledge of long-term care insurance. I think they had transportation.

Our experience with Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington was excellent. It could not have been better. They were very helpful with information. The guided tour was great. The staff was great. We just loved everything about it. I describe it as the Taj Mahal of senior living. The rooms were beautiful. I was just totally impressed. Everything about it was five-star. They had a group in there doing Tai chi.

We've toured Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington. It was a lovely facility, the staff members were warm and friendly, and it was very nice. The rooms were like an apartment, it's a clean and beautiful facility. The staff member who gave the tour was very professional and thorough in their assessment. I did not try their food, but the dining area looked very nice and clean, and the food looked enjoyable. Everything about the place was fine, it would be a nice place for someone to live.

There hasn't been a Director of Nursing for the last 14 of the last 18 months as of Dec. 2022. Patrel is a nurse who charts your resident "fusses" - a non-clinical comment with a lack of personal connection. Sunrise senior leadership looks to silence feedback with eviction notices rather than a supportive care plan. After winning the eviction appeal hearing, Sunrise was forced to do their job.

We toured Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington. The staff member there was delightful. He was lovely, but I didn't engage with anybody else. The place was clean, new and up-to-date, and they had a great walk-in shower facility, which is great for older folks. There were some neat features that way. I just got a different vibe there. To me, it was not as much assisted living. It's just a different residential component. It's not that it's bad, it just didn't fit our needs.

Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington looked nice. It was very lovely and nicely set up. The staff was very nice, very helpful, and very sweet. The dining area looked very nice, too, but the unit where the residents live was not adequate for me. It was just a bedroom and a kitchen. It's extremely small and there's no room in the kitchen to do anything.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad is a resident of Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington. They have very caring staff and residents that have been there for a long time. They have a nice little courtyard outside. They do individual care, and they have the memory care option if somebody needs that. They have a salon where they can get their haircut and do their nails. They have activities where they'll take them out a couple of times a month for ice cream, or lunch at a local restaurant and drive through Brandywine Valley. They have a dining room where they can eat.

I toured Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington. I was impressed with Victoria, she was nice and accommodating. It was very nice, and you can tell that they do a pretty good job. They offered pretty much the same amenities as the other community I toured, but the other place costs higher than this one. It's a very well-kept place. They had a gym, they had a lifestyle area, and it's about 10-15 minutes from the hospital. It's close to everything.

I chose Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington for my dad because I felt that the facility was very clean. The people were very caring, the services they offered met my father's needs with regards to his memory. The staff is very attentive to my dad, and they go beyond that. They care about the residents there and they try to facilitate individual needs because everybody is on a different level with dementia. So, if they need to be engaged, the more they address them on their own needs. And each week they reevaluate them to see how better to serve them in their community. They're constantly active all day. I believe that he's receiving the care and the adjustments to meeting his needs all the time.

Provider Response

Thank you, Barbara, for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise of Wilmington and the dedicated care givers and team members. We are passionate about our community and always enjoy hearing the many beautiful stories about our residents and/or team members.

I was impressed with the people that work at Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington. They were very friendly and helpful. The place was bright and cheery. The overall experience was a positive one. They had a variety of activities. They had the opportunity to be taken to shopping venues like Delaware Park and different places. They have bingo and some sort of chair-type exercises. What they told me sounded nice, but for our purposes, it wasn't really necessary. The dining area seemed very nice, open, and clean. It looks like it would be a good experience. The tour person was very good. The rooms were very adequate but basic; I think it might have been called a studio. The atmosphere was bright, well kept, clean, and pretty cheerful.

What a day I had!! Had been in discussions with Wilmington Director Tamme about increasing my mother's level of care. There was no room available in the appropriate unit at Wilmington. Next think I know my mom is on a shuttle to the other Sunrise we were discussing. Her furniture did not arrive at 6 pm. My mom arrived at 11 a.m. Not sure what the rush was. Never confirmed anything with me except that a move was necessary. I guess once you turn your loved one over for care they just make whatever decisions work best for them, not the patient or the family. I guess I should have said "don't move her until I know exactly what you are arranging" but I never thought they would just go ahead like that without confirming the exact arrangements.

My mom is in Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington. It's very good, we've had no problems at all, her accommodations are very nice, spacious enough for her, and she's been treated very well. The staff seems to be very nice, very accommodating, and very attentive. It's in a relatively nice area of Wilmington, but it looks like there's no space there if she wants to walk a little bit.

My friend lives in Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington. He passed away last week. The community was excellent. They had extremely caring staff, they had a well organized management team, they were very proactive with answering questions or changing a situation to be more comfortable for him or the residents. It's extremely clean, bright, and cheerful. Lovely people, well-managed, helped with problem solving, and I couldn't ask for any more. He was extremely happy there. They had different kinds of gatherings for different interest groups, and games, when things are special, they turn it into a social event with refreshments and community type activities to bring the folks together. The food was excellent, it looked and felt like walking into a dining room of a hotel, and the dining area was lovely. It is expensive, but you got what you paid for.

My tour of Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington was lovely. The woman who did the tour was very thorough, very friendly, and introduced me to the activities director. They had an entertainment area. Most of the residential part has showers, but there's a room you can sign up to take a bath that had bathtubs. It felt very homey, and it's very clean.

The food was OK. From all the ones we looked at, that definitely would be the only one I would consider. It was sunny and cheerful. The people and staff were very nice. We also walked through the memory care unit, which was also nice compared to the other ones that we looked at.

The one we settled on and then put my friend in was Sunrise of Wilmington. We were very impressed with them, and the place is decorated like my grandmother's house: very old fashioned, warm, and welcoming. It's like coming into a home, but the rooms are a little smaller than I would want. The dining room is very attractive, and they seem to have a lot going on. The staff is extremely helpful. What really amused me was they seem to have ice cream socials fairly frequently, and they have piano players who come in. When you go in, there is a whole schedule up of what's going to happen that day.

I visited Sunrise of Wilmington. The staff working there was awesome. The director who spoke to me was really family oriented. The residents were very open. We sat and talk with them. My sister and I even had lunch there. The food was absolutely awesome. They also have a lot of activities. Everything was upper scale. You have to have money to stay there.

I knew right away that I wasn't going to select Sunrise. Not because of anything I saw, but because it had a neighborhood-look to it, and it just seemed a little bit confusing to me. It seemed like a lot of patterns and a lot of prints. I know that they were going for the homey kind of look, but I found that cluttered-looking. They had the same care team every day. I have to say, for dementia patients, having the same care team taking care of you is very good. I saw three rooms. One was a studio. One was the Denver, and one was a medium studio. They did have a full rehabilitation on-site, so I thought that was good. The halls were small. Each hall was, I think, what they call the neighborhood, and they had a main room. After breakfast, they have an exercise program. Hand massages and manicures were available. 54 assisted-living apartments. There was an offer for a $100 off your move-in fee. There was nothing that I didn't like about it other than I wasn't going to go for it, and that was mainly because of the location. It was far away from our homes, and I thought it might be a little bit confusing for Mom.

Sunrise was a nice place. It was very accommodating and I loved the nurses up there. It pretty much cost around the same as what I'm paying now. I didn't have an appointment and a girl took me around. She was very accommodating and she called one of her staff who was part Ukrainian so it was very nice. I liked the facility and what it looked like. There was nothing wrong with it at all.

My parents are at Sunrise. The facility was very nice and amazingly clean. They staff is committed to the patient and very caring. They even give me a discount on the room. They have a lot of activities though my parents didn't join the activities because they really can't do too much. My dad hates the food because it is very healthy and bland, but my mom seems to like it.

Before visiting for the first time, I had a negative impression of assisted living due to expose type reports on TV. The image I had in my mind of this type of place was more of a nursing home than an actual assisted living facility. When my grandmother moved into the Sunrise home, I made my first visit, and I must say I have been very impressed with the facility. The staff is friendly and not only knows my grandmother well, but also knows my family and I personally. The facility is clean and well-maintained. While the food seems bland to my tastes, my grandmother and the other residents definitely enjoy the food and have no complaints. Today I attended a Halloween party with my mother, my infant son, and my wife. There was music, a scavenger hunt, musical chairs, and a contest to determine the most creative costume. There was also food, sodas, juice, beer, and wine. Everyone had a great time, residents and visitors alike. Events like this help to get the residents in a festive mood. This is just one example of how the staff come together to engage the residents. Altogether, after visiting this facility many times, I feel much better about my grandmother living here.

I was always pleased with Sunrise Senior Living in Wilmington, Delaware. My Nana stayed here for the last few years of her life. She was not an easy person to handle, especially in those last years. However, the staff and environment was a good fit and pleasant one for her. The staff was always so kind every time I was there and took a genuine care for the seniors living there. The place always looked clean to me. It always smelled clean, as well, which is a plus. Anytime there was a problem, small ones, the staff was so accommodating and stepped up. The other members of the Sunrise Senior Living establishment were often friendly and my Nana made a lot of friends both with the staff and other seniors. The staff was made up of mostly young, early to mid 20s male and females. They seemed to have a great deal of patience and enjoy their jobs for the most part, which really speaks to the overall environment of sunrise.

My dear friend is a resident of this facility in the alzheimer''s neighborhood. I am greeted by smiling and friendly staff every time I visit, and I have never had a bad experience with them. The caregivers care for the residents around the clock, and treat everyone with the utmost dignity and respect, despite the debilitating disease of Alzheimer's dementia. The caregivers are very knowledgable about the disease and have very unique ways to cope with ''sundowning' and the sometimes violent behaviors of the residents. These caregivers are the hardest workers I have ever seen, and I commend them for all that they do -- from their intelligence to their physical strength, due to all the lifting they must do. I also have great things to say to the nurses, who are always willing to help and really get to know the patients. The food is also great, and the chef seems to be accommodating to the specific dietary needs of the residents. In the semi-independent community upstairs I am often greeted by several residents who seem to be having the time of their lives, engaging in daily activities such as crafts and bingo, and enjoying their independence. I know that my dear friend is in a safe and happy place, and sunrise assisted living allows me to sleep peacefully at night.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My family's experience with Sunrise was truly a mixed bag. I believe that an assisted living experience partly depends on the resident's perspective and willingness to participate in activities and programs. My grandparents lived at Sunrise for nearly 2 years; unfortunately, they were quite ill and unable to fully take advantage of what Sunrise had to offer. Sunrise offers beautiful public areas. The landscaping and outdoor areas, as well, are very nicely maintained. The dining room is top notch as well; wait staff, menu choices, and service are all excellent. Residents can participate in a wide array of activities, ranging from shopping bus trips to wonderful seasonal concerts. If residents don't want to join in the organized activities, they can take advantage of the many common rooms. There are many sitting areas where residents can play cards, read, or socialize with friends and family. There are also rooms available that can be reserved for parties. Despite all of the positive aspects of Sunrise, I definitely believe that the lines of communication could be maintained more efficiently. When we wanted to discuss my grandparents' well being or mental health, it took considerable time and effort, on my family's part, to find the appropriate contacts, arrange a meeting with staff members, and get answers. The facility doctor was unavailable much of the time, and I would have appreciated much more clarity and discussion when medications were added or removed to my grandparents' regimen. We often became frustrated and felt that we just being handed off to the next person to deal with.To be fair, I realize that my grandparents were not typical residents, and needed more extensive care. However, I still feel that these aspects could have been managed in a more effective way. Families pay a premium for their loved ones to reside in these facilities, and it is not unreasonable to ask for a little personalized attention when it it needed. Overall, I think Sunrise is best for a specific type of resident: one who needs some help with daily living but is well enough to enjoy the social programs and activities that Sunrise offers. If you or your family member requires extra care or attention, I suggest you really do your homework. Research facilities, meet with staff and directors, read reviews, and really dig in to get the answers you need.
