I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Foulk Living has been caring for my parents like family! Their rooms are comfortable. The food is delicious and plentiful. But the best part about Foulk Living is the staff! My mother has dementia and has been at Foulk Living for over a year. Her nurses treat her with respect and dignity. She is dressed and clean. They interact with her to stimulate her brain. They love her in our absence. My father was brought to Foulk Living after rehab for a broken hip. Sadly, he was too weak to recover from his surgery. The staff at Foulk were so attentive to my father’s needs in his final days. Not only did they care for him, they cared for us as his family. We were encouraged to spend as much time with our father as we felt necessary. They made sure we ate and explained everything that was happening every step of the way. They even made sure that my mom was brought to my dad’s side so that they can have time together. They love my family and care for them physically as well as emotionally. Never did I expect the level of care and love we have experienced! Foulk Living and the staff are top notch. We could not have asked for a better partner in taking care of our parents during the difficulties of their lives!! Thank you Foulk Living for loving my parents and caring for us all!!!

Provider Response

Joanne-your review touches our hearts; thank you for the kind words. We're so proud of our team and the care we provide. Thank you for entrusting us with your precious parents!

Our interactions with the staff have been overwhelmingly positive. They truly care for and about my mother and father. My father is in hospice and they have truly helped my family walk this path easier. My mother is in memory care and the staff always make sure she is dressed up to visit my dad. I couldn’t ask for more caring people to help us with the aging process of my parents.

We moved my mom into Foulk Living about a year ago. She has dementia and needed more care than a traditional Memory Care unit could give. The staff is wonderful with her. They are loving, respectful and are allowing her to go through the stages of dementia with dignity. She is becoming more agitated and when I asked about possibly starting to sedate her their response was that they didn’t think she needed it yet and they didn’t want her to lose her spunk. I was so grateful. They communicate frequently with our family and always welcome us warmly when we visit. It’s so nice to know I don’t have to worry about her!

Provider Response

Linda-thank you for the great review. We love spunk! We are sorry this is a difficult time for you and are proud to help you navigate it.

I visited this facility

Foulk Living was very modern. Overall, it was a beautiful facility. They have 24-hour care, a salon, a courtyard, a lot of different activities for their residents, and free transportation. They had pretty much everything. The staff was great. They were very knowledgeable and very friendly. The dining area was small, but it was very cozy, and very well decorated with very nice furniture.

Provider Response

Thank you for your lovely review. You captured all the amenities, services and people of which we’re very proud. Please be sure to let us know if you have any questions. And we’d love to welcome you back for another visit!

Foulk Living was five stars. The staff was great. The place was extremely clean. The memory care facilities were great. My son went with me, and we were totally impressed. Everything was excellent. The residents were out on a patio. There was some interaction with the staff out there and the residents.

Provider Response

Hi Richard! We’re glad you found us to be five-star and appreciate you taking the time to let us know! We are happy to hear you enjoyed your experience with us. Please come back and visit again!

Foulk Living was the one that we're going to go with, but Medicaid wasn't approved. I would recommend that to anybody. It's a nice facility. I really didn't meet any staff. The only person I met was their marketing director, and she was helpful. They have a library, a recreation room, a little chapel, and laundry facilities.

Provider Response

Elston: Thank you for taking time to post this review! We're glad you noticed our nice amenities as it's important to us that in addition to caring for our residents, we're able to keep them active and engaged.

I visited this facility

Out of the three I visited, I like Foulk Living the best. The director there was wonderful. I met the head nurse, and she was incredible. They seemed to have a lot of activities. They seemed flexible with somebody like my mom who is mentally all there, but physically declining. It seemed like nothing was staged there. People were gathering in alcoves, and they had a little happy hour. The staff who weren't involved in my tour were very engaged with the residents. When we walked down the hall, the residents would say hello to the two staff members we were with, and we stopped for a minute and they talked. We encountered a couple of situations where a couple of residents that you could tell were declining in mental health, and they were just very kind and respectful. It was just a nice, good feeling. They had an outside space like a courtyard kind of thing. They had a salon on the premises, too.

Provider Response

Thank you for your review! We agree that our Executive Director is wonderful as is the rest of our staff. We like to keep our residents active, engaged and happy! It means a lot that you noticed that about Foulk Living. We have a lot of renovations and refreshing of the building underway…come and see us again. The results will be beautiful!

I visited Foulk Living. I didn't really get a whole lot of the tour. When I entered the door, it was very welcoming. The people were kind, as far as greeting you and talking about their program. They gave out information on what they had for assisted living and independent living. It looked like everything was going very well on their part. They presented everything very well and very professionally for me and my husband. I didn't really get to look at the rooms. They have buildings outside where you can have your own place outside of the building. From what I have seen, they look really nice. They may have upgraded a few things in there. We were told that some of the areas were upgraded. I saw the hallway. It felt pretty clean in there. It was nice and breathable.

Provider Response

Hi Maxine, Thank you so much for the positive review. We’d love for you to come back and see our beautiful apartments, as well as all the enhancements we’re making throughout the community! Please feel free to contact us at your convenience!

The staff at Foulk Manor North is spectacular. When both of my parents got to the point that they required 24 hour care, Foulk Manor North walked me through this very difficult process with caring and compassion. This was not the only facility that I looked at, and I have never regretted choosing this facility. My parents, who require 24 hour complete care, are always well cared for and clean. I am always included in decision making, and am always kept well informed of any clinical changes no matter how small. They work with me to coordinate doctors appointments that are outside the facility. They also have an in-house physician and nurse practitioner, both of whom are excellent. The nurses are kind and caring. The Director of Nursing is engaged, available, and amazing. The social worker is amazing as are the Physical Therapists. I cannot possibly list all the positives. Everyone I have had the pleasure of meeting is top notch, friendly, and kind. When I visit, everyone says hello with a smile. I would highly recommend this facility if your loved one is in need of more care and assistance than you are capable of providing.

Provider Response

Thank you so much for taking the time to post the lovely review, and thank you even more for entrusting your precious parents to our care. We work hard to earn and maintain your trust and take great pride in keeping your parents well-cared for and loved!

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

7 years ago when a family members came here, it was completely different. Fresh flowers everywhere, entertainment regularly, lovely furnishings, regular celebrations with outstanding food and even television at one time. Sadly, much has changed. Not the chairs in the dining. room. Pretty bad, unclean and worn out. Careful to sit without protection. Food brought out cold, unappetizing and sometime inedible. Ice cream vendor left with their freezer - none to replace it so ice cream is even melted. Where are the chairs in the center? We've been told they're on order. It has been a long time. Management keeps changing and the residents who do have any idea of what is going on, live with the lack. Not the same place it was, sadly. Where it was full of liveliness, it's quiet as a tomb. Too early for some of them, though. Management please get to work.

Provider Response

Dear Unimpressed: Under new management, Foulk Living has a new name and we’re working hard towards our bright new future. We’re sorry you’ve been disappointed with our amenities…please keep checking back. You’ll see nice changes with the exciting updates to come. In the meantime, if you have specific concerns, please don't hesitate to call Leslie Johnson, Executive Director. We would love the opportunity to discuss your concerns further and improve your overall experience with us.

I visited this facility

I toured Foulk Manor. They seemed to be very good and efficient in what they offer to the people who need those things, and who need an independent living but need meals as well. It was a more colonial style in terms of decoration, so it's a little bit more ornate than the other place that I toured. It felt very comfortable. They had a little bit more in terms of the activities and the kinds of rooms available, like the activity rooms. The gardens were just a little bit more elaborate and a little bit more stylish. The facilities seemed adequate for what an elderly person might need. The rooms were spacious enough for one or two people. They had little cottages or casas, and more types of offerings for independent living. So it's not just apartments, but they have cottages as well, and the cottages were very cute. I like that they had the window doors that open out onto a little patio with the woods right behind it. That was charming. They had a friendly staff, nice accommodations, and nice service. I was also impressed with them.

I went to see mainly the independent living part of Foulk Manor in Wilmington. They have a very caring staff for the residents. It's not as updated as the other place, because it changed hands but they said they're going to update a lot of things. It was sold recently so now they're going to update the lobby and stuff like that in the place. They had an activity sheet that I didn't see because I wasn't looking at that. I was just trying to look at the facilities. They said they have gardening though and I did see that garden. They have bingo too. It is dated so they're redoing it. I'm sure once they do it, it'll be very nice and a lot better. I will say the cottages they showed me, one of the cottages which they redid with all the new appliances and stainless-steel stuff, was nice. There was food offered but I did not taste anything.

I like that Foulk Manor has independent living cottages in the back, and I thought those were nice. It's not applicable to our situation, but it's still very nice, I thought. If somebody independent could live in the cottage in the back, then they could walk into the dining room for meals and activities and such. They offer assisted living also. The person who gave me the tour was OK. She wasn't as good as the person at the other facility, but she was pleasant enough and knowledgeable about the place. We saw three different rooms. The one-bedroom was a nice large area, a large living room, and a fairly large bedroom. The larger studio was also fairly large; you have room for a couch and chair and things like that. The smaller studio was more the size of a small hotel room. They were clean. No smells or anything like that. The residents have control of their own heat. So that's nice that they can set the temperature the way they wish. They have physical therapy there, but it's physical therapy as prescribed by a doctor. It's not physical therapy where residents would just go up to have somebody help them work out a little bit if they wanted to. They have birthday parties every month. They were just winding up the April birthday party when we came in. They have a dining room and such. Some people were sitting around the tables. The facility as far as the building was a little bit threadbare in places. For instance, on the way out, they have automatic doors, and the first set I pushed the button, they opened, and in the second set, they didn't open, and I had to manually open them. There's a little bit of maintenance that needs to be done there.

We placed my mother in Foulk Manor North. She's in independent living with the Starlight program and they'll come up and check on her during the day, and if she needs any assistance with anything they'll help her. Like they'll make her bed and remind her of different activities during the day. Her apartment is beautiful, and she loves it. She's very happy, and I would recommend them. They have bingo, exercises, arts and crafts, music, and happy hour. I like that they're open a good part of the day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She'll go down at 8:15 for breakfast and some of the ladies will sit down there until 10:00. They also go on outings. They have a van that takes them places, they have a library, and they play cards. The place could be updated a little bit more, but for the most part it's very nice for the money. The staff is very friendly. They completely redid her whole room, she has a new bathroom, new carpet, painting, an air-conditioning and heater, and a walk-in closet.

We weren't as impressed with Foulk Manor North. The apartments we looked at were smaller and they were more expensive than other places. The facility wasn't as updated and things looked old and used. The main person who was supposed to give us a tour was not in that day so they had someone fill in who was very nice, but it's not her usual job so there were a lot of questions she couldn't answer. Their carpets looked old and the chairs in the hallways need to be replaced.

Provider Response

Dear Mary, as the Executive Director at Foulk Manor North, I can assure you that it is always our intent to exceed the expectations of our guests who visit our senior living community. We take pride in the quality care and comfort we provide to the many happy residents we serve. I would welcome the opportunity to further discuss your specific needs and welcome your feedback. Foulk Manor North was very nice. We didn’t go there because their therapy was just a visiting service, and my friend needed it all the time. The facility was great, and the people were very nice. I went through the whole place, and they told me the different levels of care that were available, and I was interested at that time in their assisted living facility as well as respite care. The apartments all looked very nice, well taken care of, and clean. I also was interested in finding out if they had a built-in lift, and I don’t think had that; they had the wheeled-in one. It was very nice, but the therapy is what my friend needed and that was not available.

They showed a more compassionate level of care for the people in the assisted living at Foulk Manor North and they were kind of quieter, but that was because of the stage of aging that the residents were in. But the facility itself was very bright, warm, inviting, and uplifting. And, they just showed good care to the patients who live there. They even showed how they had this open policy where people can open their bedroom doors, so that they can see light. One resident even had a pet like a little kitten or maybe it was a tiny puppy, but it was a teeny, tiny animal that they would allow on the premises as long as the pet is a manageable and well-behaved small animal. They don't advertise to bring pets in, but if someone is going to do poorly if their pet is taken away, then they would allow the resident to keep it. It was just amazing to see that this pet was so used to this woman and they thought it would be detrimental to her if they take the pet away, so it was just really nice.

The staff at Foulk Manor North was extremely courteous, overly accommodating, kind, caring, and compassionate. They seemed very interested in providing care and service and they really cared about our situation. Financially, she showed me some different options when it comes to the rooms. She also explained how people transitioned at different stages of life whether it be due to age or because they need a community where they don't have to do everything themselves. She also explained what type of housing and care they offer as well as what might be needed at each point in the different stages of aging -- she was just really helpful and caring. The facility was gorgeous. I would move in there myself. The décor was warm and inviting; the people that we encountered during the tour were happy and at ease with being there -- they were socializing and they had activitie. They also had beautiful garden grounds to walk around and a little enclosed park area where you can sit on benches. It was just really, really top notch. It was so nice.

When I visited their long-term skilled nursing, it was absolutely beautiful. You would never have known it was a hospital-type facility. It was very lovely. When you went into their skilled nursing, you would have a semi-private room, but it was a very large room. They had 46 beds there, and I remember really liking the looks of it. There was a lot of wood, and there was carpeting, along with some tile floors. I recall going into where the common room was. They had the residents in there. They were being entertained. People were reading newspapers to them, so they were being stimulated. I saw several groups, so it wasn't like they had one big circle with just one person. There were several groups of residents doing different things. I thought they were very well-staffed. It was, by far, the nicest skilled nursing facility I had seen.

Foulk Manor North was one of my favorites. They had 12 apartments, and they offered a memory care unit. I liked the fact that it was small, and so it would have been very personal. The woman who showed us around was very nice, very professional, and very smart. She had a lot of information. She talked to us about a geriatric doctor that they could recommend if Mom went there. I do know that the medication and all that they would give to my mother would have been included in the monthly fee, so there wasn't a lot of extras that they were going to tack on to the initial price. She told us that if any of the residents had special needs, they would be aware of that because it was small. A lot of folks with dementia, when the sun goes down, they have a difficult time at that point of the day. If they knew that my mom was going to have a difficult time at that part of the day, they would have distracted her before that would have even occurred. So that was nice that they were going to be proactive on issues. My mom had gone to the hospital with UTI, and the woman who showed us around said was my mom's UTI never would have sent her to the hospital because they would have recognized that. They know their residents so well that they would have recognized right away if something was unusual with my mother. I liked the kind of care that I thought she was going to get there. They had a small dining room. The apartments were a nice size. They have an activities director six days a week from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, so that's a pretty long time to be there to offer that. They had four aides for three floors and two for night shift. One was always available for the hall my mom would have been in in memory care. The aides were aides for the patients. They had different folks working in the dining room. They had different folks working for cleaning. So it wasn't like the aide had multiple duties of cleaning up dinner or cleaning the apartments and taking care of the residents. I think that's the only place that I found where they had different types of staff for different activities.

The facilities were extremely beautiful and well kept, including several out door pathways through gardens. The staff present was all very friendly and helpful. They took the time to explain to the younger kids why homes like these are necessary because they could tell this was a first time experience for most of the children. The staff always addressed the residents very respectfully and patiently. At one point during the visit we approached a room where an elderly gentlemen refused to come out and talk with the kids. At that I just assumed we would move on and let it slide because we had no right to force this man to talk to the kids. One of the nurses (I believe she was a nurse) leading us around however had other ideas. She walked into the room and gently explained what the kids were there for and why he should come talk to them. She persuaded him without using any sort of aggression or impatience or annoyance. That one part of the day summed up the whole experience for me. The nurses there knew what they were doing and took the time to do it right. They were exemplary people and just the kind of staff I wanted to expose the children to. From these employees the young group learned what true care meant and then the importance of the care through the reactions of the residents. This nursing home was better than any other I had seen or heard of.

The facility is very well kept and all the areas are cleaned daily. This helps add to the appeal of the facility. The nurses and physical therapy staff are all very helpful and do a good job at what they do. They help my grandmother create a plan which was adjusted as progress was made. The staff do a good job of checking in on the patient as they have checked on my grandmother almost every time I was there to visit. Also after talking to my grandmother they check on her in the middle of the night in the event that she has fallen or needed to use the bathroom. Unlike of facilites I have been to it seems like the staff actually want to help my grandmother and are always very friendly to me and my family. The only negative of this facility seems to be the food that is provided. My grandmother does not enjoy the food but it will get the job done when your hungry.

While the actual facility was nice, the patients seemed very demotivated and "hum-drum". I had a chance to talk with a few of the patients and they expressed a lot of concearn with the fact that a lot of the nurses ignored their needs because they either A. did not understand the request because they spoke little to no english and B. did not care because they figured the elderly patient would just forget about it. It was very eye-opening to see how residents are actually being treated. Again, aesthetically, the place was very beautiful but after hearing complaints from some of the residents I chose not to take the position.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I have visited the Foulk Manor Facility on numerous occasions, typically two times a month to visit a relative who has been a resident over the past year. My impressions of the facility are generally positive for the nature of the business. Upon walking in you notice Foulk Manor is very well maintained and does not appear to be an assisted living facility. The furniture looks new and modern looking and gives the feel of a lively place. Residents can be seen walking around and intereacting with other resdents and staff. I have been approached by personal by residents looking to engage in conversation. The staff takes special attention to tend to the needs of the residents. They engage them in games and activity throughout the day to keep them occupied and entertained. Some residents like peace and quite, they are allowed the ability to stay in their rooms and do things at their leisure. Buses can be seen entering and leaving the grounds through out the day, These are offereed to residents as an opportunity to leave the premises and go places such as doctors appointment, etc. Overall while no one wants to end up in an assited living facility, Foulk Manor of Wilmington is top notch and the staff are very accomidating.

I visited this facility

After my grandmother recently passed away, my grandfather decided that he wanted to move into a retirement community. I have always been pretty active in my grandfather's life so I wanted to be one of the ones who went with him to look at places. I have to say, the one that stood out most in my mind was Foulk Manor and I hope it turns out to be the one that he decides on. I had never had a lot of experience with assisted living facilities, I had always thought they were more like hospitals. Some of the facilities we visited fit that mental picture more than others but the one I was most impressed with was Foulk. It was like it was almost like a regular apartment complex only with a lot of really friendly people to help out with the day to day things. The staff there really seemed to care about the people living there. My grandfather has always been pretty independent so the Independent Living facilities they have were perfect for him. The thing that impressed me the most was how peaceful it seemed there with lots of outside areas to sit and relax in. My grandfather has always liked the outdoors so the fact that it wasn't stuck in the middle of a city was perfect for him. It really is beautiful there and I really think my grandfather would be happy living there.

Friend or relative of resident

I have several church friends who are residents at this facility, and I have taken scout troops to volunteer with residents. The common spaces on the first floor of the main building are spacious and well maintained. The are a variety of space types, which lend themselves to many different activities. Within the facility, there are many levels of care. For those able to live independently, there are garden condos. There are typical assisted living room, and an area for those who need medical care as well as daily living care. There are many assisted living facilities in the area, but this one has been an enjoyable and engaging home for my friends.
