I toured Brookdale West St. Paul (AL). It's a smaller community, so more direct care may be available. The staff that I met, seemed friendly, and it seemed clean. That's about all I can say. I didn't test the food, I don't know so much about the activities. The rooms were different. At Brookdale, you just get a room, that was it. There's no one bedroom, there are no two bedrooms. It's just a room. So that was a big difference. It's just a bedroom, a bathroom, and a closet. The dining area was ok, it's open, and has an open kitchen, and it seemed nice.

Brookdale West St. Paul looks like a nice place to call home. It's assisted living. I had no expectations going in but what I saw exceeded what I could have even thought might have been possible. The best thing about it was it was clean and looked like you could furnish your own residency or your own room in a way that you wanted it. You could use your own stuff. The least thing about it was, and it wasn't a big concern of mine, but it was of the other family members, there wasn't any diversity there. They were all old white people and I'm an old white person. There was no diversity and my mother-in-law was 100% Mexican. I think sometimes, being with your own kind, is helpful. I just assumed West St. Paul would have a more diverse population. The staff was very knowledgeable. I think her name was Melanie. She is very knowledgeable. She knew the answers to the questions we had and I did ask her about the diversity. She said it's unfortunate that they just don't have a very diverse population there. I know that there's the availability of free choice of what you might want to eat and when you might want to eat it. It seemed like there was a range of options there. They had decent parking. I peeked into a couple of rooms that were already occupied and it looked like housekeeping does a great job of cleaning and maintaining a sense of order.

The person that gave us the tour at Brookdale West St. Paul did a good job of explaining everything, but we really aren't in the place to make a move. We think it was a little too small anyways for a one-bedroom facility. She did a good job of explaining what they are all about. The community was OK, and it was nice. Everything is on one floor, which is nice. I think it is good for what you would want. I like everything on one level, not because it becomes more of a problem as you ger more ill. I think that part was good. It was very clean, it seemed pleasant, and the people were talking.

Our visit to Brookdale West St. Paul was good, but we also felt uncomfortable. We found that they had outside-wall baseboard heating. It was obvious that they've had some leaks or problems. We were there on a pretty cold day, and you could see that the windows kind of leaked. The unit they showed us was in pretty rough shape as compared to the other units that we saw at that price point. We liked the idea that they had on-site cooking, but the people doing the cooking didn't have hats or gloves on, and they had more tattoos than anything to protect the food. The lady who took us on the tour was very nice, very knowledgeable, professional, very positive, and really nice to be around. She was outstanding. I think she worked hard because she followed up with me a couple of different times. The outside look was appealing, but the inside is moderately unappealing. It's cramped. The only other thing was the whole time we were in there, we saw the cooks, but we didn't see any helpers. Then we saw two girls at the end of the hallway who were just giggling up a storm -- and again, wearing no gloves or face protection. That was just about a month or so ago, so we were kind of concerned from a safety standpoint. When it comes to cleanliness, it looked like it was more "surface clean" than "deep clean." We liked their smaller unit. That's exactly what we were looking for -- something with a little less square footage -- so we liked the size of it. It's just old and not updated. It had two outside walls right when you walked in the door, and it looked like it would be a really cold room. It didn't seem warm or inviting.

We went to Brookdale West St. Paul. What we liked about it was it was small. It was one floor all the way around, and it would be hard for anyone to get really lost. It looked like more one-on-one service and that they would be able to really watch the people there. The staff was very informative and really good. They have assisted living and memory care. I think it was a nice place, but it was pretty spendy.

We visited Brookdale, and it was very nice, but it was farther away than other places. The apartments were fine, the staff was very accommodating, and the residents seemed fine.

Brookdale West St. Paul had several properties. One of them had an elevator and one didn't. It was very nice-looking inside and was set back into the woods, which gave it a nice, woodsy feel, like living in the woods. I liked that.

My wife lives in Brookdale West St. Paul. It meets her needs. The staff is very good, very personable, and provides one-on-one attention while she is transitioning. They have good food and a lot of activities. The atmosphere is very good and feels small and family-like. The rooms are big enough.
