I visited this facility

I toured Brookdale West St. Paul (AL). It's a smaller community, so more direct care may be available. The staff that I met, seemed friendly, and it seemed clean. That's about all I can say. I didn't test the food, I don't know so much about the activities. The rooms were different. At Brookdale, you just get a room, that was it. There's no one bedroom, there are no two bedrooms. It's just a room. So that was a big difference. It's just a bedroom, a bathroom, and a closet. The dining area was ok, it's open, and has an open kitchen, and it seemed nice.

Brookdale West St. Paul looks like a nice place to call home. It's assisted living. I had no expectations going in but what I saw exceeded what I could have even thought might have been possible. The best thing about it was it was clean and looked like you could furnish your own residency or your own room in a way that you wanted it. You could use your own stuff. The least thing about it was, and it wasn't a big concern of mine, but it was of the other family members, there wasn't any diversity there. They were all old white people and I'm an old white person. There was no diversity and my mother-in-law was 100% Mexican. I think sometimes, being with your own kind, is helpful. I just assumed West St. Paul would have a more diverse population. The staff was very knowledgeable. I think her name was Melanie. She is very knowledgeable. She knew the answers to the questions we had and I did ask her about the diversity. She said it's unfortunate that they just don't have a very diverse population there. I know that there's the availability of free choice of what you might want to eat and when you might want to eat it. It seemed like there was a range of options there. They had decent parking. I peeked into a couple of rooms that were already occupied and it looked like housekeeping does a great job of cleaning and maintaining a sense of order.

The person that gave us the tour at Brookdale West St. Paul did a good job of explaining everything, but we really aren't in the place to make a move. We think it was a little too small anyways for a one-bedroom facility. She did a good job of explaining what they are all about. The community was OK, and it was nice. Everything is on one floor, which is nice. I think it is good for what you would want. I like everything on one level, not because it becomes more of a problem as you ger more ill. I think that part was good. It was very clean, it seemed pleasant, and the people were talking.

I visited this facility

Our visit to Brookdale West St. Paul was good, but we also felt uncomfortable. We found that they had outside-wall baseboard heating. It was obvious that they've had some leaks or problems. We were there on a pretty cold day, and you could see that the windows kind of leaked. The unit they showed us was in pretty rough shape as compared to the other units that we saw at that price point. We liked the idea that they had on-site cooking, but the people doing the cooking didn't have hats or gloves on, and they had more tattoos than anything to protect the food. The lady who took us on the tour was very nice, very knowledgeable, professional, very positive, and really nice to be around. She was outstanding. I think she worked hard because she followed up with me a couple of different times. The outside look was appealing, but the inside is moderately unappealing. It's cramped. The only other thing was the whole time we were in there, we saw the cooks, but we didn't see any helpers. Then we saw two girls at the end of the hallway who were just giggling up a storm -- and again, wearing no gloves or face protection. That was just about a month or so ago, so we were kind of concerned from a safety standpoint. When it comes to cleanliness, it looked like it was more "surface clean" than "deep clean." We liked their smaller unit. That's exactly what we were looking for -- something with a little less square footage -- so we liked the size of it. It's just old and not updated. It had two outside walls right when you walked in the door, and it looked like it would be a really cold room. It didn't seem warm or inviting.

We went to Brookdale West St. Paul. What we liked about it was it was small. It was one floor all the way around, and it would be hard for anyone to get really lost. It looked like more one-on-one service and that they would be able to really watch the people there. The staff was very informative and really good. They have assisted living and memory care. I think it was a nice place, but it was pretty spendy.

We visited Brookdale, and it was very nice, but it was farther away than other places. The apartments were fine, the staff was very accommodating, and the residents seemed fine.

Brookdale West St. Paul had several properties. One of them had an elevator and one didn't. It was very nice-looking inside and was set back into the woods, which gave it a nice, woodsy feel, like living in the woods. I liked that.

My wife lives in Brookdale West St. Paul. It meets her needs. The staff is very good, very personable, and provides one-on-one attention while she is transitioning. They have good food and a lot of activities. The atmosphere is very good and feels small and family-like. The rooms are big enough.

Brookdale West St. Paul was a much smaller home, so it was very different and felt more like a home and less like a hotel. Also, it seemed to me they had an arrangement where they had doctors who serve the facility come in to see the residents. They did have an activity room and an activity director. They also took people out for event if they wanted to. Because it’s a smaller facility, I don’t think they offer quite as much as the program from the other facility we visited. However, they still had what looked to be a very dedicated staff.

I visited this facility

Brookdale West St. Paul (Formerly Sterling House of West St. Paul) was immaculate. The grounds and everything were very well kept up to a high standard. However, the people there were rushed. Someone went with me, they didn't give us a chance to ask all our questions, and they almost were pushing us to sign. I am a little bit younger and the people that I assume were the residents there were a little older than me, but it was a very nice area. It was by a golf course, and there was a park within a few blocks. It wasn't a high rise; it's like a ranch house that is one level. Nobody really was grumpy. Some women were playing cards and a game with little tiles, and they were very friendly. No one particularly turned us off or turned us on. However, for someone like me who is losing my eyesight, it would be next to impossible for me to go anywhere there. They didn't have group transportation like a van. I would've been pretty isolated there because it was a residential area. The woman did tell me that there were birthday parties, and they would have a minor league baseball and a group of residents will go to the new stadium. We asked about their food, and the woman showed us a menu for that week. They have 8 or 10 menus that rotated every two weeks, and I could talk to a dietitian if I had concerns about the food there.

Sterling House of West St. Paul was a little older and more expensive. They had bingo, which my dad was most interested in. The staff were very friendly, and the rooms were sufficient.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mother is in Sterling House of West St. Paul. We only looked at two because the doctor says we need to have her in a facility rather quickly, and my mother likes this one because it is small. There are only 19 people in the house, so it's like a group home. She thinks it feels more like a home. The staff that works there seems very good. They are always friendly. They always say "Hello" whenever I go and visit, and I usually go unannounced. I don't call ahead and say I'm coming. They have rooms and not apartments. They are nice, bright, and airy. They are not roomy or large, but they are not overly small. Every single room has a great big window, which makes the room nice, bright, and comfortable. I don't know all of the activities they offer, but because it is a memory care, they do some music, therapy sessions, and memory games with them. They take them on outings and they go out to eat. They go to the park. They do actually quite a bit with them. One thing that I am not thrilled about is their food. I don't think their food is wonderful. It is very different from the way that we have always eaten at home. I don't know. I never think of myself as a food snob, but after eating there, maybe I am a little. I think they can improve on the food.

This was the best option for me and for my grandma when she became sick. I was not able to look for her accurately and she had to take her medication. Also, she needed someone to help her with the daily activities she had to do, including going to the toilet and so.I needed someone to take care of her. Sterling House of West St. Paul was my best choice ever. I chose it because the staff here was very nice, they were very pleasant people. My grandma was pretty happy about them, as she could discuss some interesting things with the man who took care of that. Also, there were many other facilities that seemed very helpful for her. I really thought that this was good both for her and for my family. Me and my husband had to put a great effort into taking care of her.I'm really satisfied about this Assisted Living facility. My grandma seemed happy and that made me happy, too.

When looking for a place for my Grandpa to live in the area, this looked like the best place. The staff was really nice and provided care for anything my grandpa needed while still letting him decide what he wanted to do. This place is great, it has so many things that care for their residents. My grandpa has Alzheimer's and I needed the best place to care for him and this place has everything. A nice place to eat, a fireplace, and food/delivery service. They do an excellent job of caring for their residents and I really appreciate the great work they do.This place offers so many services and they actually care for their residents and it shows. I'm happy with my grandpa staying here and being able to visit and not have to worry about anything. I would recommend this place to anyone else that is looking for the best Assisted Living in the area.

Visited this facility

Since were in the St. Paul area, we decided to drop in and see the Sterling House of West St. Paul as we were looking for a place for our uncle to live. The exterior of the facility looked like a vacationing center, well-manicured and inviting. The vibe was friendly, but still professional. The staff are all casually dressed, even the medical staff, which puts everyone at ease. The main entry room had a nice fireplace in the corner with an adjacent seating area. The family room is a good size to entertain visiting families. The food is specially prepared to meet specific nutritional and dietary needs. They track weight with management plans as needed. The snacks included fresh fruit, crackers, hard boiled eggs and vegetables. We were relieved to find that they can accommodate residents with Alzheimer's and dementia if necessary, since our uncle has some memory problems. They also have plenty of staff to help with unscheduled personal needs and personal requests, which our uncle really liked. He can also have his cat at the facility. The private apartments were really nicely decorated with plenty of light and great views. The layouts were easy to navigate and the kitchenettes had more counter space than most that we've seen. Some have nice eating areas which makes it nice for private visits. We were also told that they could help us customize a living plan for our uncle that would include all of his particular needs and preferences.
