I visited this facility

Highgate at Vancouver was a smaller facility and more intimate as far as the setting. The staff was nice and the residents seemed to be having fun. There was some type of group gathering going on while I was touring, the people at the time were involved in it. They have places like an area with books, and they had a nice library there as well. The person who gave the tour was nice and he was very knowledgeable about senior care. He was able to answer questions before I even asked them, and he got along with my dad, so that was great. Their rooms were a little bit smaller than the other two places I toured, but they also had an open living and dining area, the same kitchen with a microwave, no stove, and a walk-in shower. So it has the same layout as the others.

I visited this facility

I went to Highgate at Vancouver. It was very nice. It's an older area, but it was very well kept up. I talked to Michael there, and he gave us a very good rundown of the facility. It's rather small. I think there are only 60 independent living, then they have assisted living, and they also have memory care there. It's a kind of small community, and it's very nice. What was interesting and fun is that they have what I call little cottages (They called them villas). They're little two-bedroom houses so that all the independent living people have their own home as far as that goes. We didn't get to go into one, but we saw a little map of what one looked like. It's two bedrooms and it's really cute, so that was nice. The only drawback we could see to that is that in the winter when it's nasty outside, you've got to cross the whole darn parking lot to get to the building. They also took us through assisted living. When you moved to the assisted living, it was a one-bedroom apartment and that was very nice. There's a little lady living there, and she let us come in and look at her apartment, and it was very nice. It had an apartment garage sitting on the outskirts of the building. The maintenance looked wonderful and looked very nice. The dining area was very nice. We did not eat there, but it has a nice big patio out there with lots of light. The staff was very pleasant. Like in most places, everyone seemed to know everyone. The community is nestled in a nice little area there that is all fenced in. Right outside were several shopping areas on a busy street, but it was quiet in the little compound there. I would only give it a 4 for that. It was too close to too many businesses.

I visited this facility

Highgate at Vancouver was more expensive than where my parents are. You had to eat breakfast at 8:00, and the rooms were a little darker. It was really close to where they lived before, that's why we looked at it. Everything was nice about Highgate, the staff, the looks of it, everything. It's just that you had to eat breakfast at 8:00, you had to eat lunch at a certain time, and dinner at a certain time. That makes it really hard for my parents because they have so much to do in the morning with getting ready and everything, that it would be hard for them to get down there at 8:00. It was just too regimented for them and their lifestyle. We didn't really get to see but one room that a lady was already living in, so it was hard to tell, but the view outside there wasn't as nice as the views where my parents are. It was darker. We really liked the person that gave us the tour. He was very nice and very friendly, saying hi to people in the hallway, knew everybody's name, just very personable and likable. There were some people in the hallways sitting in chairs doing exercises.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father-in-law is living at Highgate at Vancouver right now. I've never been inside of it because we transferred dad into it while Covid was strong. I've never been inside except for the very front door. I don't know what it looks like, I don't know anything, but the staff there is incredibly friendly. He's in memory care. The only activity that dad does is bully people right this minute. He's so far gone in his mind that he doesn't even know what's going on, so I'm looking for a place to take him because they don't want him there anymore and that's the sad part. I honestly believe that his behavior changed once he couldn't go out anymore. We were picking him up once or twice a week and taking him out and doing stuff with him and then when that quit happening, his behavior changed. I think that if he was able to get out and do things more, his behavior should change back to better than what they are now. He's clean every time that I picked him up. He's put on a lot of weight since he went back there. I'm going to say that they are treating him pretty good and he likes it there.

After two placements with unsatisfactory results, the staff at Highgate Vancouver have been a breath of fresh air. They are responsive, proactive, and accessible. More importantly, they have earned our trust by providing quality care that addresses Mom's physical, emotional, and cognitive needs. The family is especially appreciative that they have an ongoing and predictable activities calendar.

WE have been associated with them for four years. They offer many activities for the residents that are top quality. The rooms are maintained at a high level of cleanliness. The staff is kind, courteous, and helpful. The common properties (inside and out) are clean, cheerful, and welcoming with decor that is appropriate for the season. They offer choices for each meal and are open to suggestion from the residents on ways to improve the dining experiences.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My parents have been residents of Highgate for nearly six years, having started out in an independent living villa, moving to an assisted living apartment, and finally to the memory care cottage. A main factor in choosing Highgate was that my mother could be cared for throughout her progression of Alzheimer's, and now that she is in the final stage of her disease I can say that Highgate's care for her throughout has exceeded our expectations. I visit often enough and interact with the staff such that I'm confident in saying that this a group of genuinely caring people. I'm constantly amazed at how much the caregivers truly do care about the well-being of my parents. The nursing staff is excellent as well. I am kept well informed at all times.

Every staff member is top notch. Any issues are quickly resolved. They make friends with the residents and get to know them personally. There is a feeling of caring. I do wish there were more activities and get acquainted functions. Also an activity room separate from the board room would be nice. L

Highgate is a good fit for the resident who is not looking to be super-active. Hence, it is a good place for our mother. They offer light exercise, decent meals, bingo, happy hour and a van ride every week. Other activities are offered that are suitable for those that need assisted living, which is a majority of the residents. The population is smaller than some large places who may offer many more activities for independent residents. I do wish there were more employees to serve meals. Sometimes the wait can be a bit long. But overall, we are happy with how content our mother is.

The staff is very attentive to the residents, and treats them with kindness and respect. The staff is very timely handling any concerns. We have placed a huge amount of trust in Highgate to care for our mom, and they are exceeding our expectations. They have made the transition for our mom so easy. She loves all of the activities! Can't say enough good things.....

We moved my mom here who is 94 and still quite independent. Our experience has been more than wonderful. The facility is very well appointed and the staff so welcoming and competent. The food is excellent with high quality ingredients and served by caring staff. The activities are great too and the atmosphere is very positive. My mom absolutely loves it and so do we!

I visited this facility

My mother has severe Alzheimer's. We were at a point that she needed to go into a care facility. I researched, and visited, numerous sites. When I went into Highgate, I was impressed immediately. During the visit of the memory care unit, the Director said hello to and knew the names of patients in the unit. Some of the patients, those that could, even communicated back knowing her name. The other staff were interacting with patients that showed care, activity and help. Most of the other facilities had very little interaction with patients, these units were quiet and the staff seemed just there doing a job. At Highgate, I was very impressed with the Director and her honest concern for my situation and mother's needs. The staff at the facility showed that they wanted to be there, had interest in every patient and their unique needs. The facility was clean, bright and provided a large area for movement, activities and interaction. After moving my mother in to Highgate, her whole condition has improved. She has put some healthy weight on, her facial impressions show more interest and observance of all activity around her, she is well fed, clean and daily activities have improved her actions and movement. The staff is caring, show interest and concern, friendly and even in times they need to be more firm with a patient I've only seen them handle in a professional and positive way. I only have one mother in this life, and having to deal with such an awful condition as Alzheimer's, I am very happy that she, and my family, have the wonderful help she is getting at Highgate.

My brother suffers from early on set Alzheimer's. We cared for him in our home until he became a danger to himself and us. He was not violent but he would wander about the house at night turning on the stove , lights and performing other acts that could have disastrous results. Committing him to a home was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make so we researched several facilities before we settled on Highgate. Some of the homes were like heaven's waiting room as my wife put it. Patients were left to their own devices sitting around watching TV, no planned activities that sort of thing. Highgate on the other hand provided organized activities, a wonderful caring staff, van rides and just an enjoyable caring environment. My brother is cared for by the best. All of the staff treat him as they would their own family member and he truly enjoys himself there. It is not an easy decision as I said, but you need to consider that due to the stress of caring for a loved one and the demands placed upon you and your family that unless there is some relief the caregiver predeceases the loved one in 50% of the cases. This leaves your loved one to care for themselves with no one else to represent them or their well being. In a facility there is 24 hour care and at Highgate, the care is amazing. The caregivers almost become an extended family

Mom is in the assisted living part of Highgate. We choose it because of the number of residents, its location and the overall feel and look of the facility. It's more homey and not such an institutional looking situation. The people who run it are very caring and there is a lot of young energy there. The staff makes it more personal by introducing me to a couple of residents and let them talk about their experience there, where they come from and they are very open about it. It isn't as though as a program presentation. I feel very comfortable visiting my mother. One thing that is important to me is that they are taking charge of her meds because sometimes her memory is not good enough that she's messing up on that. If someone needs extra care like my mother as there is a concern that she may fall and no one would really know it, she has a call button on her chain around her neck at all times and any time that she needs assistance or help, she pushes the button and they respond right away. That is big comfort to an elder person because they are worried that people aren't going to hear them when they need help and that is a relief. They are all very concerned and they always know where she is and what she's doing. It is an open door policy. You can come and go any time you want and the residents who are able to go around on their own, they come and go as they want. They have both independent living and assisted living. They have little apartments on the exterior part of the main building for independent living, they have assisted living that's more of apartments and then they have memory care. My mother is 93 years old and not too interested with activities, but there were a lot of success stories with people that have come in in wheelchairs and walker and because of being involved and actively exercising regularly and just getting out and about, they are no longer using those devices. They are much healthier. They have a nutritionist who works with them and the food is very nutritious. She hold open session and invites all the residents and families or whoever are interested to come in and talk about the menu. It is very informative and it is also a venue for the residents to speak up if they have something they don't really like in the food or the menu. The meals are balanced and they customize the meal to the needs of the person individually. They just seem to be overall happy there. You don't hear a lot of complaining.

Highgate Senior Living has independent, assisted, and mental care. They're very caring people. They know everybody and anybody that comes to their front door by name. I can't believe how they remember names. Very efficient and very prompt on calls that are made to them. Nursing staff is very, very good. Food is very good. Old building. Everyday, there's something different, and they have happy hours. They have entertainment that comes in once a week and they take their people to different places. Many varied activities.

Highgate is awesome. Everybody there is really good. They are good with my mother-in-law. She just loves it there. She has been there for three months now. She really likes her room. The facility is very clean. The staff all seems like they really care a lot. Because my mother-in-law has memory problem, she has to be taken a little more care of and the staff is great there. I would really recommend that place. Also my brother's wife had her father there and she really recommended Highgate to us.
