I visited this facility

We didn’t care for Sunnyside Gardens. The rooms didn’t have bathrooms; they had shared bathrooms down the hall to take a shower. Everybody seemed nice. It was clean, and the dining area was OK. The location was good, but the rooms were small.

I visited this facility

We have my mom at Sunnyside Gardens. It's been great. Every Tuesday and Thursday, John comes and plays and they call it a dance party. People are in wheelchairs, but he dances with them. They play trivia and do exercises every morning, which my mom participates in. Today, they had a bus trip to cross the Dumbarton Bridge and go to a national recreation area. I love the food there; it's great. They have a big variety and always have an alternative if you don't like the entree, like a hamburger, fish and chips, or a ham or turkey sandwich. I like all the staff: Diane's at front desk, Erika and Ed do the activities, and their staff seems really nice. They know my name. My mom's room is a good size and has a patio and you can bring your dog there.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My dad is in Sunnyside. I am impressed with how kind the people are. My dad has only been there for a two months, but they are very kind to him. I go up there, and they know my name. They treat him well and take care of him. That is the most important thing to me. It is not a paradise, but it is enough for him. He is happy there and that’s all that matters. The rooms are clean and small, not upscale. The food is good. I have seen some of the activities they do. On Sundays, they have a pastor that comes in for a sermon. They have music time, exercise time, and go outside somewhere on a bus ride.

I have my mother in Sunnyside Gardens because it’s a smaller building and the prices were better since they weren’t part of a big corporation. One of the things that’s different is they don’t have any showers in the rooms or refrigerators. Their dining room was fine, and the staff was friendly and helpful. I like that there weren't showers in the room because it’s a hazard for older people. They could get in the shower and not get out, or slip and fall without supervision, especially in the memory care.

I already found a place for my husband. The name of it is Sunnyside Gardens. I fell in love with it. It is all one level. It is extremely clean. The caretakers are very, very good. The food is excellent. I would recommend it to anyone. What I like about this place is its cleanliness and the caretakers. I'm absolutely satisfied with them. One of the things that is nice, they also have a bus service. With my husband being in a wheelchair and he has to go into Kaiser tomorrow, they will take him. That's a big relief for me. Also they have an activity center and they have something going on all day long. They have TV, coloring, exercise, and puzzles. On top of that, they had Elvis impersonator came out and they have a high school band that came out. They had lady dancers. They have a tremendous amount of activities. The dining room is great. There are plenty of seats. It is spacious. The care tenders bring the food and set them up. The food is so good. With regards to room, my husband has a shared room because it is $1000 cheaper. It is absolutely adequate for him. In fact, we took our recliner out there for him. There is plenty of room. If anybody asks me, I can't tell enough good about this place.

Sunnyside Gardens Assisted Living had some exceptional care staff and a good many that were mediocre. They have a rotating staff, and apparently, they don't compensate their staff well, so it's like a rotating door with a few exceptions. You have constant change in staff. I did not find them particularly well-trained and certainly not in the special needs of my father. He is mature, and that means his skin is fragile. I spent three sessions before admission detailing his life, our life, and his needs pre-admission, and I was assured that they could be addressed. They represented themselves as a small boutique, very individual-oriented, and yet I did not have a game plan ever legitimately presented to me for extending his platform for the memory issues, for the dementia onset. Frankly, I think, in retrospect, it was a mistake on my part in that he was certainly not very near the higher functioning, as the folks in there were. I would leave him at night in bed, and when I would come the next afternoon, he'd have some cuts on his legs that the care staff had not addressed. I did not find it a well-managed organization. I think their community director, Tanya, was fabulous. But we left not satisfied. The chaos in their memory care dining room was just agitating to my dad. He was a great deal more competent than they were prepared to address, like placing him in memory care. He should not have been placed in memory care initially. Yes, he had memory issues, but he would have been much better served in assisted living.

About Sunnyside Gardens in Sunnyvale, California

Sunnyvale's Premier Boutique Assisted Living & Memory Care Community!

Sunnyside Gardens got its start in 1988 when owner Jason Chartier was working with his own parents as they moved in and out of different hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. “I wanted something different,” says Jason. “More like a hotel and less like a medical institution. That is when I decided to build Sunnyside… for the needs of my own mom.”

Today, Sunnyside Gardens is still family-owned and operated. Jason’s daughter (Jackie) has taken on more of an active role in the company. She serves on the Board of Directors, implements remodeling and upgrades and she is the Community Relations Director. When Jackie imple-ments anything, she first asks herself, “What is best for the resident?” Her proactive approach includes listening to the residents and their families on what they would like to see in our community.

  • Our R.O.S.E.S. therapeutic enrichment program keeps residents active and engaged

Memory Care:

Because we have the support of nurses on duty 24 hours per day, we can care for a more complex memory-impaired resident. We have three rather distinct programs and sections in our community to help tailor our care plans to our residents' unique needs.

We strive every day to improve the quality of our residents' lives. Our programs provide attention to emotional, social, physical and spiritual health. Not only must activities entertain and delight, they should also improve emotional well-being and increase self-sufficiency.
