I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad has been at Lakewood Senior Living for several months now. It is very, very nice and very clean. You walk in, and there are always people smiling and greeting you. There are activities every day that he can participate in if he wishes, but he doesn't. It's very upbeat. There are nurses on call and assistance on call. When he pushes his button, they are there to help if he needs anything. So far, we've been very happy with it. They have bingo. They play all different kinds of board games and cards. They have a guy who comes in and plays music for them on a piano, and they just sit around and listen. They have parties all the time for any occasion or birthday. They're very involved in their residence. They have a good menu. It's a hearty breakfast in the morning, lunch, and dinner. If they need snacks, they just push a button, and they will bring them something. We keep a lot of snacks in his room because they have their own room and everything. I've seen the food, I've never eaten it, but it looks good. The room is good. I think it's a little small, but it's functional. It works for him. They do have two beds in there, which he could have a roommate. I would not recommend two people in this room. There's only room for like one TV and one recliner. So if the other person were to bring something, they wouldn't fit, which is why they probably haven't brought anybody else in there. It looks like most people have their own private room. He is basically in a semi-private room, but he's the only one there.

I visited this facility

I toured Lakewood Senior Living for my mom, and they have a nice cafeteria. The lobby area was very nice, too. The only room available was semi-private and it was very small. It seemed kind of dark and it just wasn't as appealing as from the other place we saw. I didn't like that because I thought mom would be too crowded in the room with another person. The staff was super nice. The carpets and things in there didn't seem as clean and fresh as the ones in the other place, but it was probably okay. It was just an older facility. They have about everything, and they do all kinds of activities.

My parents are in Lakewood Senior Living. They've been there for about two and a half years now, and we've been very happy with them. We're very happy with the activities. They do a lot of music programs, which is really great for Dad with Alzheimer's. Music is the one thing that he has retained over and above everything else, so they do a lot of different music activities. They also have exercise every day that they participate in, and they take trips in a van. Mom and Dad don't go on the trips because that's very confusing for Dad, but that is something that they offer. The hospice pastor comes and does homemade ice cream once a week. Sometimes, they have people that bring their miniature horses in that they can pet, and they've got different people with therapy dogs that come in. They have just a wide variety of different activities going on. They do a really good job on their activities. We have eaten there, and they always invite you to eat any meal. There is no charge for it. If you're there during the mealtime, and you want to eat, they offer you with the meal, and the food there has been good. Their chef is fabulous. The staff is outstanding. The facility is very clean, very well kept, and very easy to get around. Dad's over in the memory care. He spent time in assisted living in the same room as Mom, and then he moved over to memory care. He has gone downhill significantly, and he is really not able to participate in the activities, so when we visit, we just sit with him. From what I've seen of the activities, they're very good as well. The staff does things like have the residents paint their names. She will write their name out and have them go over it with a paintbrush, to kind of work not only on fine motor skills, but also recognizing their name. I've seen karaoke going on there, I've seen noodle ball, which they take pool noodles and have a balloon around to kind of work on their motor skills, and the staff reads stories to them. They sing, and there's a piano that somebody can play if they want to. From what I've seen, the activities have been very good. It is very expensive, as are all facilities, but it is definitely worth it. They're safe, and they're happy there.

I visited this facility

Lakewood was smaller than the other facilities that we had looked at. It seemed as if the location was really close to a busy street and I was concerned that because it was more open, my parents could just leave and walk around. There wasn't an enclosed area for them to stay in. That was the reason I didn't think that that would be good for our situation. The staff in the actual buildings was very good. It did seem a little strange because I had tried to make an appointment a few weeks before, and the person on the phone kept talking to us about if we would be able to afford it, how we were going to pay for it, and things like that. She kind of discouraged us from coming and visiting, and then a few weeks later I called back and I talked to somebody else and I scheduled a visit. Then, apparently, the person that I had talked to the few weeks before found out that I was coming to visit and she called me before I came in that day and again questioned me to see if I was going to be able to afford the facility, trying to discourage me from coming. I still said I wanted to come and see the place. When I got there, that lady that kept trying to discourage me from coming came and met with us and gave us a tour instead of the person I scheduled it with. The facility itself was nice, except it was kind of close to a road. There were some drawbacks.

I went to The Arbors at Lakewood. I like it better than I did with the other one. It was very nice and very clean. It was smaller. I like the layout of the rooms better. They have a nursing facility and a memory care center.

Everybody at The Arbors Lakewood was generally nice to Mom. I didn’t have a problem with them. They tried to get her to do stuff, but had Alzheimer’s, so even though yhey tried their best, when an elderly person doesn’t really want to be there, they’re not going to participate. She was in a room with another person because that’s all they had available. There were two twin beds in a room, which was clean with one bathroom and one closet. The food was fine. I ate with my mom there two or three times. They have something going on all the time for the people that live there, like some days they had bingo and singing. They also had some church people come in, and they did all kinds of activities with them every day. Mom was there for two and half weeks.

My husband is in The Arbors at Lakewood. The staff takes excellent care of their patients. Patients are not considered as patients there; they are considered as friends. It does make a big difference in how they are treated, what is going on, and all the different things that they do with them. The rooms are not the best in the world, but they are adequate. They are kept clean, and they are fine. They have plenty of room there. Their food is excellent. They have a very good chef there. They provide good meals for their people. The people's relatives or friends who come who may want to stay for lunch or dinner is fine. The social recreation is very good. They have different thing that they do with the patients, and everyone seems to like it.

Alzheimer’s Unit is called the Arbors. It’s right there by the assisted living center, and it was very nice. They took us on the tour, and first they showed us the assisted living a little bit, but we weren’t interested in it. We quickly went next door to the Arbors, and she turned us over to somebody that works there or manages there. She took us on a full tour -- from the baby room to the kitchen. It was very good. It was a place we would place mom if we needed to. We liked it.

A house is just a house, until it's filled with love. The staff at Lakewood are like family, and every time I'm there I see the love and respect for my parents as well as all the other residents. Mom & Dad both love their new home, and therefore so do I. We are so lucky to have found this place!

I visited this facility

My daughters and I checked several Alzheimer's Assisted Living places at the recommendation of my husband's doctor. He recommended doing it now before it became necessary. He said we would know which one was the right one when we stepped inside. We visited the top 3 that we preferred (location & would eventually accept Medicaid when the time came). Lakewood Arbors was our second stop and we knew it was the right place. They gave us a tour, talked to us, and then told us about a respite "Daylight" program they offered. This was a good option we thought for when I go on a vacation with my daughter in a few weeks. He could even stay there at night, if they had the room. About 2 weeks later it became apparent we were in need of the Daylight program so I could continue working. They are so compassionate and courteous. Jim sometimes gets weepy and misses me, and they are so compassionate and take the time to sit with him in a quiet place and explain to him where I am and that I'll be there soon. One day when he was having a very hard day and crying, the Recreation Director took him out to the patio and talked and prayed with him. I knew then this was the right place for him. They are not going to be able to keep him 24 hours at a time while I'm gone on vacation, but he's able to stay there all day, and I've arranged for a home health care agency to stay with him at night. Having him at the Arbors he's around other people and I'm assured he's getting a good meal and social time, and maybe even a little exercise. The nurses and staff greet us by name each morning we come in and the head cook always says"Hey buddy, what are you hungry for today for breakfast?" I feel so much more comfortable leaving him and going to work.

The Arbors is a locked Alzheimers Facility opened in March of 2011. Their ratio of staff to residents is higher than required by the State of Missouri. The staff is very caring, patient, understanding, and supportive. My mother has been there since June of 2011 after we took out of another Alzheimer facility in Illinois that was not caring for her as we had hoped.
