I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My 91 year old mother moved to Hawthorn House over 2 years ago when she was unable to safely live at home (mixing up medicine, not tossing spoiled food from the refrigerator). She is so happy there! She loves the food, visitors (handbell choir, therapy animals), the on-campus activities,(sing-alongs, bingo), and trips to town (Walmart or lunch). She's made new friends and likes being able to walk around the grounds daily. Her apartment floor plan is just right and accommodates her walker well. The facilities are clean, bright, and cheerful. The staff is knowledgeable and kind. Her attitude, mood, and health have improved in the 2 years that she's been a resident.

My Grandmother was having physical therapy and had applied to house at the Hawthorne house. She is qualified as her husband served in the navy and retired from the airforce. I myself am a disabled veteran. When representatives from the Hawthorne house came to the physical therapy center to evaluate her, they saw that see was in a wheelchair, they did not take in consideration that everyone is required to sit in a wheelchair at the physical therapy center. They denied her entry into the Hawthorne house because they thought her mobility was compromised, but it is not. They say that they are there for veterans and their families so they can live a happy dignified life. This is not true.

Our mother was a resident Feb.2019 deceased Sept 2019. She was literally STARVED to death. Other than her Arthritis she was a semi active woman. She had difficulty eating due to rheumatoid. We were promised she would receive special utensils and have therapist to assist. None of this took place. While clearing out her room the director had the nerve to state WE ARaE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ASSURING THEY EAT. No family was notified until it was to late. Thwy need to be investigated

I really like that Hawthorn House was a non-profit community, and it was for military widows. All the people I've dealt with so far, my mom has had no complaints. She really likes the food, the chef they've got there is awesome, and all the staff there has been really good to her. They helped her unpack, put everything where she wanted, and set up all her furniture. She didn't have to do anything. From what I've seen, her room is really nice. It's not too big and not too small, it's just right for her and her stuff, and everything she needs there. Because of COVID-19, they're not able to do activities outside but they're able to get creative, so I appreciate that they're trying to do everything they can.

I visited this facility

My mother is on the waiting list for Hawthorn House. The facility was by far the best we visited in this area. They have 1-bedroom units, and there were a lot of military facilities on the grounds. Their memory care wing apartments are structured the same way as the assisted living, and that's a big plus. Linda was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They were playing bingo when we visited, and in one wing they were bopping a balloon around. The food looked good and they have the option to eat in a dining facility. Each floor has a dining facility, and you can just walk out your door and down the hall to eat, so that's convenient.

I visited this facility

Since I was fifteen years old, I have had the opportunity to visit, volunteer, and minister in many varied senior living facilities. Whether they were nursing homes, retirement facilities, or assisted living homes, I have seen a wide variation of health care provided. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit my wife's grandmother at the Hawthorne House. As I drove onto the campus, I was immediately struck by the quietness, tranquility, and beauty of the place. After entering into Azalea, I was in awe with the creativity, care, and quality of the place. The dream that put this place together to make its residents feel as much a part of the rest world was incredible. From the little store used to allow those residents to maintain their independence, to the dining facilities that resembled a nice restaurant, these gave the residents the dignity and respect of living their later years in as much possible peace and comfort as possible. I could not help but notice the other activities that were offered the residents as well. Every day there was always something that a resident could be involved. I think what most impressed me above all else was the individual care of the staff to assist those residents in need. For my grandmother-in-law, I know that she is receiving the best possible care available. For those individuals who are making decisions as to where they may place their loved ones, I recommend this place above any other. I have seen quite a few assisted living, retirement, or nursing home facilities, and this by far tops them all.

My mother lives at the Hawthorne House and I have to say that the care and love that I have seen towards her and others is exceptional!!! As I live 9 hours away, when I come to visit I have actually spent the night in her room. I have witnessed first hand the love that is so freely given even when they did not know I was watching. Having my sister living close by to keep an eye on our mother I am always getting wonderful reviews from her and anyone else who has visited her. The facility is well maintained, beautiful and very comfortable. As we had our mom in a different facility before this one I have to say that even if they look beautiful that doesn't mean the care is good. We found that out the hard way! I would not hesitate to put any of my family members in the Hawthorne House as I know they would be blessed and loved. Thank you to the wonderful staff, your efforts do not go unnoticed!

My granny has been in two facilities. Hawthorne House is far superior in every way. I believe the toughest part about adult care is finding a knowledgable, caring staff. I have seen this here at Hawthorne House. I feel like they take care of my Granny like she was their own family member. The facilities also are excellent and the staff takes pride in keeping it well maintained. I was so blessed when Granny got to take up residence here. My Granny can live with dignity in Hawthorne House.

My mother-in-law has been at the Hawthorn House (HH) for a little over a year. We moved her due to the lack of care at another facility that landed her in the hands of Hospice. I am pleased to say that she has picked up weight and no longer needs Hospice! She is on a hall that requires a little more assistance and we are more than pleased with the attention and care she receives. We are there often as we live in the area and witness the same love and care demonstrated to all of the residents. I was surprised to see the overall rating on this site for HH. To the one that rated it so low because of the waiting time to get in you should take that as a sign on how well they are doing. We have spoke with healthcare professionals that travel amongst several assisted living facilities and all of them tell us that HH is far superior to any of the others, and they had no problem in sharing that our mother is in the most capable of hands and this is where they would want their parents if the need ever arose.

Our Mom was a resident for Howthorn House for a few years until the time of her death this past Spring. What a wonderful "home" it was for her. She had a lovely " suite" with everything she needed to be very comfortable and the layout of the floor she lived on was very convenient for activities, meals and visiting. A pretty garden and walking area outside of the dining area was a perfect gathering area on pretty days! The staff was friendly, efficient and caring. Though our Mom was in her 90s they made a sincere effort to be sure she was included in activities there at Hawthorn House and away trips, which meant a lot to us. Church services were important to Mom and we so appreciated the extra effort if took to be sure she could attend services at The beautiful Delores Hope Chapel in the VIlliage. Our experience at Hawthorn House was wonderful. Can't imagine a better place for our Mom to have spent those last years!

Our mother lived at Hawthorn House for two years. It was truly her home, her neighborhood and her community. Staff, residents, family members and friends are all considered part of the same family and the quality of care is second to none. We were and are blessed to have been a part of Hawthorn House life.

It's an emotional thing to make the decision to have your parent move to an Assisted Living or Memory Care Facility. I can't imagine a better spot to have a loved one go. The facility and grounds are beautiful from the Memory Garden, and Chapel to the front lobby, common areas and the wings which are clusters of rooms for the residents. The staff from all areas, dining, maintenance, nursing, administrative and activities are amazing. Their loving care is a blessing to the residents and the family members. The spirit of Hawthorn House comes from the top and you can see it everywhere. simply a wonderful experience!

The Hawthorn House is a beautiful and clean place to live. Some people think the H.H and Bob Hope Village are nursing homes. They are not. I have several friends that live in both places and say they are the best they have found to live at.The H.H has a wonderful staff all the way from house keeping to the Director. Some one said to me the best time to visit a assistant living place is unexpected and said they did just that and found the H.H house the best place to live.

My grandparents have been in ALFs in other states, so I have had experiences with similar homes. Hawthorn House is exceptional. The residents love living there and the staff obviously loves caring for them. The activities are abundant- there is always something fun going on. I want my own mom to live at the Hawthorn House if she gets to the point where she needs a little help. The staff live by "The Mom Rule": they ask themselves, "would I do this to my mom, for my mom and would my mom approve"...as a grand daughter and a daughter and a mom myself, that's a rule that I like!

Hawthorn House was just too far out in the country, too far away from things, and also somewhat expensive. I just didn't feel good about it. I asked my mother if this was some place she would want to go and she said no way; it's too far. It's meant for people who are a little more dependent. It is assisted living and complete care, for people that need help with everything. They had a studio apartment, a larger one-bedroom apartment, and a large two-bedroom apartment. It's part of the Bob Hope Village.

Hawthorn House is in my mother-in-law’s community. It is much prettier than the others. What is not nice is this long waiting list, and I’m really unhappy about it. They said it would be 6 months, and we’re at 8 months now.

The only positive thing I can say is that the facility is pretty. The care of our loved one received was not acceptable. The facility was found by the state inspectors to have violated patient rights by improperly discharging patients. Check out the Agency for Health Care Administration's report http://apps.ahca.myflorida.com/dm_web/DMWeb_Docs/5823289.pdf They have since had to comply with the state and they have now put protocols into place because of their improper discharge of patients and not notifying family members when the status of a patient changed or when they sent them to the Emergency room. The hospital reported them to the state agency. Be very careful if you send you loved one here. Make sure they don't need any extra assistance because they won't get much help and they do not follow their own care plans that they write for the patients.

I visited this facility

Hawthorn House was sort of like going to a fancy hotel. They have a nice bedroom with a large closet and a handicapped bathroom. This one was larger than any of the places I looked at. They also have a living room with a mini kitchenette. It has a refrigerator, sink, and microwave. In their room, they provided us an iPad. The staff was very professional. I like the setup of the rooms. One of the issues in a facility like this is the noise level from the halls and stuff. So instead of having the rooms directly across the hallway, they have like curved hallways. Then off of those curved hallways is a straight hallway; they have a small hallway that comes to either side. At the end of each of the small hallways are two apartments, so you won't get the noise level from the hallways. I like the intimate settings for their eating area too. They didn't have long tables connected end to end. They have small sets of round tables in little groups in different areas, so there were more intimate settings for people who are eating. It is very clean. My brother who used to work in a restaurant was able to check out their food service area and cooking areas. He looked for cleanliness in places he would know to look for, and it was just excellent. The food service that they have in the little café is just excellent. They have their own bank in the facility. They have a PT area room and a contract PT people. They have a buffet for family members to be able to eat. They have two or three outdoor areas that people can go to. One of the big things that we have is that the military can get their medicines for free from the base. My mother takes 35 pills a day, so that is a big deal.

Looks can be deceiving, the staff and admin look very nice, friendly and willing to help they do not. They promised care for mother but they did not follow through with their own care plan. Very disappointed in the care that my mother received. They would always have an excuse they she did not received the care that week. Please do some research before you pick any place and always ask to maybe speak with some of the residents.

I was very disappointed with how they cared for my grandmother this past year and it was stressful to my family to deal with the staff. They always blamed my grandma for everything that happened. She had several falls last year and had to go to the hospital a couple of times. She also developed swelling and they hadn't been putting on her hose she was suppose to wear everday. Her memory problems made it hard for her to do things for herself and they weren't too kind or helpful when asked. Some staff were disrespectful to her and other patients. I got the impression that the aides really didn't know how to care for people with memory problems, they seemed to rush them. The food is really awful..tried to eat lunch there with her a couple times. Glad she is not there anymore!

While the facility and grounds are beautiful we found the care of our Mom did not match the surroundings. A few of the staff have been there for years, but there is a lot of staff turnover and they seem to have a high patient load. Weekends are frequently understaffed, especially at night. My mother didn't get much assistance and the staff seem to be offended if you ask for much help. Really seems more suited for people who are independent and need little assistance. Food is marginal unless you eat at the cafe which is not included in the monthly fee.

This is an outstanding facility! It is beautiful and maintained with excellence. Their care for the residents is by far the best I have seen to date. You can sense the love and concern they share for each person, and this is displayed from the top management to the maintenance personnel. Our mother resides on Azalea Hall, which is reserved for people with memory care concerns. The Hawthorn House staff members have showered her with love, praise for the smallest of achievements, and tend very nicely to her daily needs. After a very bad experience at another, very exclusive, assisted living facility, our gratitude to Hawthorn House for their willingness to try and help us pick up the pieces of our mother's once lively life, even with the Alzheimer's, will be a hard debt to repay. Hawthorn House is a genuine blessing to our family!!!

At Hawthorne House, they seemed very professional and neat. I liked the separate wings and I think you'd get a little more attention because the impression I got was employees were assigned to a wing so they had less people to take care of. I liked that they had dining rooms in each wing and they also had a central one. They also had different little cafes so if people didn't want what was being served regularly, they could go there. They rooms had a sitting room and bedrooms.
