I visited this facility

I went to Pelican Landing Assisted Living and Memory Care. It was lovely and clean. The clients there were very happy. The staff seemed wonderful. I met several of them. They have a beauty shop, a physical therapy room, and a craft room. They were setting up the most elaborate Halloween Party that I've ever seen in my life for the residents. The dining room was magnificent. The courtyard was lovely.

I visited this facility

I toured Pelican Landing Assisted Living and Memory Care. It was a favorable visit. The staff was very helpful. I liked the facility. They have a courtyard, the residents have private rooms, and they have a community room with music, arts, and other activities for the residents. They gave me a couple of muffins, and they were fine. It's conveniently located where I live. It's in a fairly busy street, but the memory care residents don't have access to the street, so they could not wander out.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother was a resident at Pelican Landing from January 2017 to December 2018 when we moved her into another place . My mother has dementia and Parkinson’s which we were assured that the staff knew how to handle . As a physician myself I know how easily it is to say that your staff is “certified “, so I watched the caretakers in memory care and I must say I was impressed in January 2017 . Things “slipping in the middle of summer 2017. The administration changed hands and the salesman for Pelican Landing became the new administrator. The activities director left and there was no one to replace her . The nursing supervisor left and the nurse that was in charge of memory care took her place . To my knowledge they never filled Danielle‘s place in memory care . Mom fell and broke her hip in May 2017 and we were in rehab for three or four weeks . At this time I also paid for her room in Pelican Landing while she was getting rehab with 12 hours of private nursing care. I realize it is in the contract but they could reduce the amount of dollars they are asking for when she is not there so they do not have to feed her or wash her clothes or provide nursing care . As I am a great proponent of food as medicine I asked them to please have more fresh fruits and Vegs after her rehab but I was disappointed to see that they were having half of a sandwich and chips at night . The lunch time menu was usually a hot meal but the night time menu was lackluster to terrible. And it ihas not gotten any better even though they have gone through four chefs. My mom had another fracture (This time in her upper a this time in her upper arm) in spring 2018. I realize Parkinson’s really makes you very unsteady and prone to falling , And the nurses seem to handle mom differntly so..... but then she fell again and again and again ..... she fell at least once a month. My sister and I who live within an hour from Pelican Landing had numerous phone calls and emails and meetings with Danielle who was by this time the in the new administrator. I even bought and showed her a bed alarm that I purchased to alert the staff of mom’s trying to get out of bed and after stalling for a month, we were told that they could not allow us to use it . My sister started sleeping at mom’s bedside while we were at world looking for another place and she still fell in front of the nurses in the daytime ! I did not know why they have not been reviewed by the state. Finally, in two years we saw the staff in memory care change up about every three months . And I know these ‘certified’ aides and nurses are working short staffed all of the time. They have 26 to 28 people and half of them needed somebody with them in the evenings to go to bed. 2 aides and one LPN have to do it all. Beware! They are better places out there ....

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Overall, we are pleased with Pelican Landing. The staff is generally friendly, respectful and helpful to both residents and guests. It is clean, well maintained and the food is generally good. Assisted living and memory care is never an easy decision. Our mom had to move from assisted living to memory care within a few months and fell in memory care, breaking her hip. These sort of accidents are almost impossible to prevent and the staff was very helpful with communicating and helping my mom get to memory care. One thing I think they should do is make some accommodations financially if a resident, through no fault has to spend some time at a hospital or rehab facility. Obviously, meals are not being utilized, so having to pay for them seems like a money grab and for many families, they are making great sacrifices to afford good care for their family members. Total time outside of the facility for hospitalization and physical was about 2 weeks. They were unwilling to make any sort of financial consideration for those 2 weeks where she was not getting meals or physical care. Again, this is in the contract we signed, but it is something to be aware of and something I believe should be changed by management. A couple of things that could be improved. The physical design of the building. It looks like a nice hotel. Great for me. Not so helpful to someone with cognitive issues. Typical of many of assisted living and MC facilities I have visited, the design seems to be catering to impress the families more than assisting the residents who often have some sort of cognitive impairment. They could color code hallways, make signs larger and easier to read. Some pretty basic stuff. I noticed that there is not much thought given to the music they play. It is often current soft pop music or very mediocre renditions of older songs. Why not consider the ages of the residents and select music and the actual recordings they know well? Very easy to do. Just takes a little work. Overall, fairly happy with the facility and staff. Not so much with the financial management leadership. Great for investors. Not so much for the client.

I visited this facility

Pelican Landing in Sebastianwas all clean. They were still laying in the carpet, so we just took a tour of it to see what they offer, and it sounded like it was going to be really good. They have a lot of social things they do with their residents and help people with dementia with a lot of brain-building games. They also had a garden. It would have been a really nice facility; however, Mom has decided that she wanted to move to South Carolina to be closer to us. Pelican Landing has individual levels of care. It is a very nice facility with a shuttle bus to take the residents to their doctors' appointments.
