The 10 Best Assisted Living Facilities in Savannah, GA for 2024

Savannah is a city of approximately 144,000 people, bordered to the north by the Savannah River and by the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Its historic district is a place of neatly landscaped parks, horse-drawn carriages and pre-civil war buildings of stone and wrought iron. Savannah is also home to one of the oldest city markets in the country, which is a must for seniors who enjoy browsing in exclusive stores and dining in fine restaurants.

No senior wants to relinquish their autonomy, but some tasks become more difficult with age. Assisted living communities offer a solution. They are places where seniors live mostly independent lives while daily chores, such as cooking and cleaning, are taken care of by trained staff. Many facilities also provide 24/7 security. According to the 2020 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, seniors can expect to pay in the region of $3,500 for an assisted living placement in Savannah. That’s the average monthly fee for Georgia and $800 below the national average of $4,300.

Assisted living fees are considered more carefully in this guide, as are the pros and cons of living in Savannah. There’s also a list of resources for seniors and their families.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Savannah

The well-being of seniors in Savannah’s assisted living communities is monitored by the Georgia Department of Community Health, which issues licenses to facilities and can revoke them if they violate license conditions. Some monitoring work is carried out at a local level by the Long-Term Care Ombudsman, although it has no direct authority over assisted living facilities.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Savannah

  • According to Sperling’s Best Places, Savannah is one of the more affordable cities in the country. Using 100 as the U.S. average, Savannah comes in at 83.2, which is also below the state average of 93.4. The only category in which Savannah exceeds the national average is utility costs. In all others, such as health and transportation, it’s more affordable than average.
  • Figures published by Neighborhood Scout record Savannah as having slightly above-average rates of violent and property crime. It also shows that crime appears to happen much more in the northwest of the city, with most neighborhoods, particularly those nearest the coast, being safer. The chances of being a victim of a violent crime in Savannah is 1 in 229, while the property crime statistic is 1 in 44. Assisted living facilities have security measures in place to keep residents safe, and it’s a good idea to inquire about the procedures in place.
  • Despite being two hours in all directions from larger cities, Savannah’s seniors have access to two of the best hospitals in the state. St. Joseph’s Hospital and Memorial Health University Medical Center are ranked #12 and #14 in the state by U.S. News & World Report. There are also 381 Medicare registered physicians in the city, ensuring older citizens are never far from specialists.
  • Savannah offers a wide choice of senior centers for older residents across the city. Some are operated by nonprofit organizations, such as Senior Citizens Inc., while others are managed by the state government. Although each center is unique, some common themes include activities designed to teach new skills and improve fitness. Although there may be some costs for specific activities, most are free, although donations are gratefully accepted.
  • Savannah has one of the most favorable climates in the state. Although the city gets more rainfall than average, 49 inches compared to 38 for the typical American city, it also gets more sunny days, 216 against 205.
