I visited this facility

I didn't like Brookdale San Marcos North. It was a little bit older and the price was just way too much. They had a lot of different amenities, which was good. The lady that I talked to was incredible. It was far to drive and I didn't like having to drive that far into San Marcos to see my mom. Even for an older building, it was nice.

I visited this facility

The Brookdale San Marcos North facility was nice. It's a brand-new facility, it just opened, so everything was a little bit new. It was a little bit brighter, and I think it was a little more modern. For assisted living they have activities and they have outings. I didn't get the impression they did the same for their memory there. I think the rooms were comparable with the other places I saw. They offered drinks during the tour but I didn't partake.

I visited this facility

We went to Brookdale San Marcos North. It was very inadequate compared to where they are living now. They were extremely friendly, but the amenities and the overall appearance were old and dark. The location was not as close as the one they moved into. It was also more expensive.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father was in Brookdale San Marcos North. We've had other family members and friends there. It's a very nice place, and they have a lot of programs and activities. He did well there, and he liked it. The food was good. They were very helpful. There was nothing about it that I disliked. The dining area was big, and the tables were far enough apart so that even with wheelchairs there wasn't a problem with bumping into other residents. They helped them eat. They came in and cleaned the room, the air-conditioning and cable were good, the rooms weren't big, but they were nice. The staff was very good. They checked on him all the time, took him to meals, and gave him his medicines. We have nothing bad to say about it. They had exercises, people came in and sang, school choirs would come in, and they played games. He's a picky eater, but he never complained about the food. He was happy there.

I visited this facility

We visited Brookdale San Marcos North. It was beautiful, and it looked like a luxurious place to live and age. Tracy was extremely helpful, and she still sends us a Christmas card even though we didn’t sign up for a lease or anything. My mother-in-law went up there for lunch one day, and she said the food was excellent. The dining area was beautiful, and there’s plenty of ambient light coming in. Tracy organizes all sorts of things that the residents who are able bodied and of sound mind can participate in, like parades for the Veterans Day, and the country cottage kitchen preparation comes in and raises money for the San Marcos community as a whole. However, the way they charge the residents is a la carte, it becomes very expensive and inaccessible for people that are not of a particular income bracket. Everything they offer is excellent, but they charge accordingly for that.

We were very happy with the director who took us on our tour. She was a very enthusiastic lady who loves what she does and loves the residents there. The facility itself was very nice. It didn't meet the criteria that we need, but it was a great facility. They had a common dining room, which was very nice, like a restaurant. They had the menus standing up, and the residents get to choose what they want to eat from several items. It had tablecloths and folded napkins. There was a calendar of a lot of things that they can do. They have bible studies, bingo, games, walking outside in the trees area, and they have a library. The atmosphere was very cheerful and happy. Everybody seems to be content at Horizon Bay San Marcos.

I am a friend or relative of resident

I did a tour of this facility with my stepfather and his family at the end of April 2015. The facility is very clean and well-maintained. It sits on northwest outskirts of San Marcos. The outside area was well-manicured and very beautiful. On the backside they have benches, nice greenery/trees/plants, and a deer feeder that attracts deer for the residents to view during the morning and evening hours. The staff was very friend, welcoming, and personable. I was touring the facility with my stepfather's family as we had hoped to move his older brother in. We were able to do just that this morning. We spent the morning moving in his furniture and belongings. During the process, the staff gave us our space to do so, while also being very friendly, welcoming, and informative. Many staff members stopped in to introduce themselves to my stepdad's brother and the rest of us. They all seemed very caring and I lost count of how many people came and introduced themselves. We finished moving him in just before noon. We decided we'd get a bite to eat since we were already there. Alex, their head chef whom we had met on our visit last month, does an impeccable job in his kitchen. The food was top notch (and this is coming from someone who ran the kitchen of a Logan's Roadhouse for 8 years). They had a decent amount of meal options to choose from. I chose the chicken, which was quite possibly the best chicken I've ever had. The rest of our group had the cod, and they all thought it was great. We also all had the cream of spinach soup and it was absolutely delicious. I've only been to this facility twice, but every time I was there, all the staff was extremely friendly, and if anyone is worried about the meals they serve, let me tell you not only are they healthy, but extremely delicious! The rooms are all excellent as well. They chose the layout of the rooms very well, as it maximizes the sq ft and makes it very spacious. I was very busy helping move in all of stepfather's brother's belongings throughout the morning, but I during my routes from the room to the trailer, I also encountered a lot of the residents. And they were just as friendly and welcoming as the staff. So many residents introduced themselves to me, that I lost count and could hardly keep up with their names. If you're contemplating moving a loved one into an assisted living environment, I would definitely recommend this one.

The care given to the residents is excellent here at Horizon Bay. The rooms are fine. It is very nice, and it is always clean. I have not eaten there, but I've observed the food is good, well balanced, and nutritious. They have singing, art work, dancing, and spiritual sections. They have all kinds of activities including painting. The friendliness and competency of the staff impressed me the most. The place is absolutely secured.

I am a friend or relative of resident

my mother suffered a coronary one week after moving in. she has been a heart patient for many years, but this was something new. horizon bay caught this event immediately and she was taken to an outstanding heart hospital in new braunfels. horizon bay employees continue to stay in touch with us and have extended every imaginable courtesy. the food is delicious, the staff extremely kind as well as well trained. it is a comfort to know that my mother is in a professional, capable and competent facility. what really matters: health, safety, and confidence.

The lady that lead us around Horizon Bay was amazing and wonderful. I think my parents would have moved in with her. She was just great and knew so much. She knew all the residents by first name, and really seem to care about everybody. One thing about Horizon Bay, it's an older facility and it feels like it kind of smell older. The rooms were small and had no kitchen. It was just like a sink in the corner with a dorm fridge. The dining area seems fine. It was nice and wasn't huge. It overlooked a nice green area which is very pretty. They seem to have quite a few activities. I know they go to church in town. It was a friendly atmosphere. The residents feel very at home there and very happy. But the facility itself seem rundown, so the carpet was peeling up. It just had an old feeling to it. So they could definitely use some remodeling.

Horizon Bay San Marco is a very well-kept, very neat facility. They have dominos and arts and crafts. The thing that I liked better about that place was it was more in an area that is not downtown Austin. It's more country and they can sit on the back porch and they would see country. This facility was set up for independent living but they could get doctor's assistance immediately.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I think the facilities were all top notch as in they had quality trained staff and nice rooms to live in. However, there are certain needs that were not met. After a week of my Grandfather not receiving a shower, I had to track down one of the caregivers and practically insist that she clean him up. He also had a lot of trouble eating as his Parkinsons progressed. His hand shook so badly that he couldn't keep the food on the utensil from his plate to his mouth, sadly no one ever offered to help him eat. I would make a point to visit him at meal time so that I could assist him. The programs they offered like physical therapy were very beneficial as well as some of the scheduled activities. These got my Grandparents out of their rooms and doing something other than sleeping or watching television. While the activities were certaintly cheesy, (bingo, halloween parties, art..) they enjoyed them simply because of the interaction with others. There was a Christain church service every Sunday as well and my Grandparents were both extremely religous, so I know that this was very beneficial for them as well. Overall I was happy with the care they received, but with so many residents in one place personal hygience needs were continuously overlooked by many overworked and underpaid staff members.

I visited this facility

While searching for a place for my brother's friend to live, we visited the Horizon Bay San Marcos assisted living facility. The Texas region is convenient for most of the family to visit. The grounds were very well-kept and we liked the park setting since the outdoors is very important to my brother's friend. He is very active and wants to have as much access as possible. We liked the spacious feel and open window environment, which let in a lot of natural light. The indoors were impressive, with a nice library area and a large room for other activities, like board games and many ways to socialize. There are other areas where residents may read, sit with friends or family or just relax. The apartments were all clean, well-kept and conveniently designed. They take the time to personalize to each resident's tastes. The list of activities included everything from sight seeing, art and musical events, to seminars, local shopping, and visits to local eateries and other cultural hubs in the region. A variety of fresh, healthy foods are offered and suit all dietary needs. We thought the menu options were plentiful and interesting. Snacks are also available all day every day. They have planned exercise classes - but also offer residents to work out any time they wish. We liked that they encourage exercise daily. The private rooms are all nicely sized and decorated. The staff and management were very accommodating and eager to make the residents and visiting families comfortable. We could see that this is a cozy, yet protected environment meant to give the seniors a sense of personal care, safety and home.
