I visited this facility

This is a huge facility with wonderful amenities. They have licensed caregivers here and I can tell that they not only know what they are doing but also they are putting their heart in it. This facility is a little more expensive though but it's all worth it.

I visited this facility

Coventry Park offers assisted living and two levels of dementia care. I've known residents there, referred clients there, and have managed the care of clients there. It's in Pacific Heights, which is fairly residential and upscale. There's good access to bus lines, and it's easy to walk or drive--though parking is problematic during the day. Visitors can park in the garage for a limited time. One thing to keep in mind when walking, though, is that once you're out of a one-block area near the facility, there are hills. The facility is about 10-12 years old and looks like a large apartment building. They've done some renovations, and it's well maintained and tastefully appointed. It holds about 140 residents. The rooms are very nice but small for assisted living--and the views are mostly of buildings next door. The care staff is very good, attentive, knowledgeable. And the dementia care is excellent. They have two programs: One floor is for those who are still fairly independent and another that offers more structured activity. It's a nice program. It recently changed hands--there's new ownership--and I haven't had a lot of recent experience. But I've heard good things from people who've been there. They say the staff is still very good and attentive. The good is also very good, with lots of menu choices. I'd give it an A-. Activities are also good. There's a focus on music. They bring a lot of music and musicians in. There's also Bridge, poetry reading, and a van for outings.

Other

This is a large facility well located in central San Francisco on Sutter Street, in the lower part of Pacific Heights. They have one dedicated locked dementia floor, one floor dedicated to enhanced memory care, and traditional assisted living floors. They used to be the go-to assisted living facility with a long-standing, reliable team and a number of gems on the staff--and they might be again. But they're in the middle of a transition. About a year ago, they had an ownership change, and things have been somewhat questionable since then. Two clients of mine have moved out (only in part because of the management issues). Traditionally, they've done a really good job at caring for residents at various points along the continuum: from the point where someone might first need help with things like transfers from a bed or wheelchair, to mild or moderate dementia, and then advanced dementia. And they still have more than their fair share of gems on the staff, who are bright and cheerful and keep residents happy. It's also moderately priced compared to other assisted living facilities in the city. One quick note on the food: The residents say the desserts are good; the rest is average.

Friend or relative of resident

I have visited this place many times, as I have several friends who have lived here. One of them recently moved to the memory care wing of the place, which offers a very sophisticated set-up and services"”including circular hallways in the living and common areas, which makes residents less confused. There are also a few sunny places for residents to sit outside, but locked, so there is no fear of wandering. There are also lots of activities offered throughout the day geared to people with different level of functioning, and people who live there are encouraged to participate rather than stay in their rooms. In the place my friend stayed before this, she was just left alone in her room most of the time"”and she told me that made her lonely and sad. The food is pretty good"”and there are nice places to dine in which people can choose to sit together or alone, depending on their moods. Alert: The ownership recently changed hands, and several of the former staff members left or were forced out. There is some concern that the new owner, Vintage, has not always provided top quality care in some of the other places it owns, and some feel it has sacrificed residents' care needs to the concern for making money. So before you or someone you know considers moving in, it might be a good idea to talk with a few longtime residents and find out whether the quality of care has changed.
