Reviews of AgeSong Hayes Valley

I am a friend or relative of a resident
My brother lives in AgeSong Hayes Valley Care. It's an OK facility and fairly priced for San Francisco. The rooms need some sprucing up and modernizing a little bit. The furnishing could be upgraded and could be repainted with brighter colors. I think they have a game room and a community room where they have activities, and a nurses' station. According to my brother, the food is not that good. The dining area could use a more welcoming atmosphere. They have a bunch of tables that could be round instead of rectangle and small groups rather than one big, long table where everyone sits.

I visited this facility
AgeSong has two communities on Octavia, near the Opera House, across the street from each other. This is an assisted living facility with all dementia care, and residents usually go in at the beginning stage. Both buildings are beautiful: new, architecturally designed, and very nice. It's the sort of place where you see flowers everywhere. The rooms are average size, with nice appointments--very pleasing to both residents and guests.
It's a good location--near bus lines in a mixed use neighborhood. I've usually been able to find non-metered parking on the street, since people are coming and going all the time.
The staff is very good, caring, knowledgeable, and skilled with dementia care. They're sometimes not as responsive as I'd like to see, but otherwise they're terrific.
I'd give the food an A+. They have an excellent chef, and there's lots of variety.
One of the nice things about AgeSong is that they bring in psych students who are getting PhDs to do internships. And the students contribute a lot to the activities program. There are so many activities--dancing, music, art, outings of all kinds--that the residents sometimes have a hard times choosing what to do.
The only negative: I sometimes see residents with an unkempt appearance: uncombed hair, a stain on clothes. It's a small thing, given that there's so much good engagement between the staff and residents. But it's just a little bothersome.
All in all, I'd rate them a 4.5 if I could. But forced to choose between a 4 and 5, I have to go with a 4.
From AgeSong Hayes Valley
AgeSong Hayes Valley is set in an expansive 1907 Victorian, fully remodeled in 1998. Located in the vibrant Hayes Valley neighborhood, it beautifully preserves the feel of old San Francisco while serving the current needs of its elders. Blending handsome historic elements with color, light and natural materials, it creates an enlivening, therapeutic environment for up to 45 elders.
The building and its public cafe provide common areas designed to support the elders’ engagement within the AgeSong community. An essential aspect of AgeSong living, is daily interaction is vital to well-being and sense of home. AgeSong Hayes Valley provides many inviting spaces to gather, from our welcoming lobby, with its grand piano and family of finches, to the charming Forget-Me-Not Cafe, where residents of both Hayes Valley and Laguna Grove join for meals and activities.
The first floor offers a men’s-only wing, while the upper floor is home to both male and female elders. On both floors, the rooms highlight Victorian accents throughout and most are comfortably designed for two. The upper floor sports two graceful rotundas, with large windows that fill the curved rooms with natural light and offer a view to the neighborhood below. Our second-floor garden patio provides a secure, attractive space for residents to enjoy the outdoors and is a popular spot for barbecues.
On the first floor, our colorful Cafe serves as one of AgeSong Hayes Valley’s most open, vital links to the surrounding community. In welcoming both the public and elders, it invites social interaction and provides customers a window into AgeSong’s reverent approach to our elder community. An ideal spot for coffee or a light meal, it also provides the focal point for residents’ daily activities such as yoga, dance and music events.
