What to Consider About Assisted Living in Richmond

The city of Richmond is not only the Virginia state capital, but one of the oldest major cities in America. It is home to a number of historic landmarks and has a population of around 227,000. Of these residents, 12.1 percent are aged 65 and older, and may require some degree of assistance with daily tasks and activities.

In Richmond, as in the entire state of Virginia, there are two levels of Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) available, depending on the level of care a senior requires: residential living care and assisted living care. A total of 50 of these facilities are available in Richmond and its surrounding communities.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Richmond

  • Residents of Richmond enjoy a pleasant year-round climate. Winter temperatures only fall to around 28 degrees, and summer days can reach a high of 90. Overall, the city scores a 60 out of 100 in terms of overall comfort.
  • Richmond has a considerably low air quality, which may be an important point of consideration for seniors who suffer from certain cancers or lung diseases.
  • For Virginia seniors on a tight budget, Richmond may be a good option. While just above the U.S. national average of 100, at a score of 102.5, the cost of living in Richmond is quite a bit lower than the statewide average of 114. This difference is largely due to low grocery, health and transportation costs.
  • Rates of property crime in Richmond are very high, scoring 55.9 on a scale out of 100, with 100 representing high crime, compared to the U.S. national average of 35.4. Violent crime rates are much closer to the national average, scoring 24.6, compared to 22.7.
  • Seniors can navigate the city with the transportation services provided by the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC), and adults age 65 and older are eligible for reduced fares. The GRTC also offers a specialized transportation division with four different curb-to-curb service options for seniors with disabilities or mobility issues.
  • Well known for its arts scene, the city is home the Richmond Symphony and Richmond Ballet, as well as a host of theaters and art museums, some of which offer senior discounts.
