frustrated in Richland

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother was at this facility for two and a half weeks. Her family is very frustrated with her care or the lack thereof. While the nurses and therapists are very friendly and kind, there were a lot of things not being taken care of. In those 2 1/2 weeks she only showered once. She ran out of clean clothes as they take them to be laundered and didn't bring them back. They won't let the family take care of the laundry so we can't help with the clothing problem. When she left the facility many of her clothes couldn't be found. We are still waiting to see if they found any of them. She had been prescribed powder for her skin folds to be applied twice a day and they had only helped her twice. When we got her home she was so red and blistered and in pain due to the lack of powdering. Since she needed help getting to the bathroom she would push the call button for help. By the time they came (once it was an hour and ten minutes later) she was often wet and had to be changed. We called often to try and get an update on her condition and rarely got a call back until we had called a half dozen times. Due to COVID-19 we weren't allowed to visit her in person, nor would they allow her to open her window so we could visit through the screen. So we would sit outside her window and talk to her via the phone. They then moved her to an inside room so we couldn't see her at all. She was never shown where the physical therapy room was so she could go to gain strength. Her diet restrictions weren't followed very closely which resulted in very consistently high blood glucose levels, some at dangerous levels. I tried to explain that they weren't giving her enough insulin. I even took over the paperwork from her endocrinologist which they ignored until they finally decided to call him themselves (something I had asked them to do the day she was admitted). When we told them we wanted my mother released so that we could care for her better at home they told us that if we took her out early that Medicare wouldn't cover any of the expenses already incurred. So we tried to hang in there longer. Finally I had to call Medicare myself and find out if that was true, which it was not. I felt that they were a little dishonest with us when discussing trying to get her released. We felt like they would trick my mother into saying she would stay another day so that we couldn't get her out. Finally we asked them if we could conference call with them and my mother at the same time as my mother would tell us she wanted to come home and the care center would say that she said she wanted to stay. Finally at this conference call (which they said they couldn't do) we all heard her tell them that she wanted to go home at the same time and they finally allowed us to go pick her up. We will never use this facility again. I should say that the nurses and therapists and receptionists were very friendly and kind. They just weren't able to give my mother the care she needed.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother was a resident of Life Care Center of Richland. She started out in physical therapy. The staff was wonderful. However, sometimes the call time to get to her to go to the bathroom wasn't as quick as we would have liked it, so my mother would get up and go by herself; she shouldn't have, but she did. Everything was great, but the only thing that pulled the wool over our eyes was when she was no longer able to get physical therapy. Medicare stopped paying, so she had to start paying out of pocket, but we weren't really notified. We knew they had stopped physical therapy and that at some point she was going to be paying out of pocket, but we didn't know it was going to double in price. My brother was getting prepared as to how much we were going to have to start paying out of pocket, so when he was there visiting he asked how much it cost per day and they said $171. However, we got a bill for two weeks that totaled $6,000, and that's not $171 a day! That's what Medicare cost and not their cost for out-of-pocket. We got blindsided. That lack of communication about how much she was going to be paying out-of-pocket was troublesome to us.

For the most part nursing has been great. My poppa was taken care of. His pain management could have been better. One of the nurses Mary C. went above and beyond her call. She was awesome and has an exceptional bedside manner! Your the best Mary! Rooms are clean. Loose the carpet. He didn't stay long enough to do activities. Maybe separate long term from rehab. Food wasn't so great

Donna's time at Life Care of Richland has been very helpful. The staff has set a plan for each individual to help then get the treatment they need for a safe and fast release. Donna has made friends with the staff and had many laughs and good time during recovery.

My husband was at Life Care, and I was not pleased with them at all. He didn’t get the attention he needed. He had knee surgery, and they did not keep track of him close enough.

I visited this facility

We visited Life Care Center, but my mom didn't go there. We saw a room with two beds in them. It was a big room, and the beds were clean. They had crafts, and it was kind of like a party. But we weren't there long enough to see what they are actually doing. The dining area was big, and it had round tables in it. It was fine.

I visited this facility

The place was clean and the residents appeared to be well taken care of, but the staff lacked personal awareness or professionalism in the way they interacted with the residents while family members were there and most likely while they weren't there. I wouldn't 'not' recommend Richland Life Care, but with all organizations taking care of family members (i.e. nursing homes, daycares, school), you have to be involved and be active in communicating what's working and what's not. My mother in-law received good care, was rehabilitated and then returned home --- the only think I would've liked to have seen is a more positive atmosphere for these rehab patients. Rather than making them walk/wheel through the entire facility in order to get to the rehab section, I'd like to see a more prominent/accessible entry point just for rehab residents --- going through the whole facility at their age is a bit daunting and a morale killer.
