I am a friend or relative of resident

My father was a resident in the dementia unit until shortly before his death. There were many positives about his stay, but also some serious negatives. On the plus side, my father enjoyed the friendly, caring staff, the many activities, and the pleasant atmosphere. However, the dementia care left a lot to be desired. My father had a bad bed sore for over a week before the family was informed of the situation and he was offered medical care for it. At that point, he had to be hospitalized, and never returned to Aegis. There was inadequate supervision of dementia patients, and signs of their decline were not well observed, understood, or managed. Also, we had a problem with ongoing theft of his clothing, particularly from the laundry. Although we reported this to the management, no action was taken. In sum, I would recommend Aegis for those who are mentally alert and able to get around the facility without assistance. I would not recommend it for dementia care.

The people were sincere and nice and that is why we picked Aegis of Pleasant Hill for my father. For the most part the facility is clean, but I think they could keep the bathroom of my father a little cleaner. The food is okay and the staff are all very nice.

They say they will engage your family member in activities, but nobody comes to the room unless they're delivering medication. We even had to call the manager's cell number, because when we used the service button (on a weekend) for some help in the room, nobody came. The manager got on the staff's case about it at the time, but how often does that happen? When we decided the assisted living area was insufficient for my father-in-law, and moved him to the memory unit, the quality of the food noticeably declined. They didn't seem to have enough staff to see my father-in-law to the bathroom during an exercise class. First, the teacher told my father-in-law he may not leave the clase, then he stopped the class to walk him to the toilet. Shouldn't he have called someone else to do that? I think the way to go is a small house set up as an elder foster care home. My mother-in-law calls them board & care. My father-in-law is moving to one of those this week. He should get much more individualized attention with just 4 elders to care for - and better food!

Staff are very caring and answer any questions regarding my mother's care. Staff have provided family support during difficult transition period and provided education regarding her condition.
