I thought Amethyst Gardens was very nice, but my brother thought it was a little too high end for him. We saw the food, and it looked really good. The staff that took us around was very nice. They had a person singing while we were there.

Our first impression of Amethyst was good, and the promises were good, but what we got was NOT good. They put my stepfather in memory care, and my mom in assisted living, and they refused to let them live together. It was the only requirement that we had. The caregivers were good, and the salesperson was really good. The manager and the nurse at the Gardens were totally worthless. Because of their actions, they now have two empty apartments there. They cost me over $18,000. Worst money I have ever spent. It was a fine, two-bedroom apartment. We didn't have any problems with it. They had activities. I still don't understand why they wouldn't just put them together. I am very sorry I ever heard of Amethyst. The food in the Gardens was really good. The food in Amethyst Inn was terrible. The manager and the nurse Amy are both at Amethyst Gardens, and they both do not care for the people. I have no intention of ever going back, and I have no intention of ever recommending them.

My husband was at Amethyst Gardens for almost six months. It just wasn’t a good fit for him; he just didn’t want to be there, or maybe because it was his first time and we weren’t realistic about our expectations. It was too confining for him. When you’re used to living on your own, and then you go somewhere where there’s a lot of rules, it's very hard to adapt. It just didn’t work that well. For the most part, the staff was pretty good. I didn’t feel that the nurse was very sympathetic to his needs, but my husband’s not necessarily an easy person to get along with. He didn’t want to be told what to do, and she wasn’t used to not being listened to. I can’t really fault her completely. The grounds were very well-taken care of and really nice. They had a pool, and the only problem I had with that was that it was not heated. They try to have things for people to do, like shopping trips. The apartment was nice, the grounds were nice, and the food, most of the time, was good. I would recommend the place for other people. It just didn’t work out for my husband.

The Amethyst is a southwest-style place. It was very nice and kind of spread out. We didn’t see enough people out and about, which we were looking for to see how much social activity happened, but it was beautifully laid out. They had an enclosed garden area. Everybody was very friendly. They were having a wine-tasting party, and there were a large group sitting out on the patio. They had a nice pool. The residents seemed very happy and friendly toward the people that worked there.

We toured Amethyst Gardens. The staff didn’t seem to be too knowledgeable. Plus, they didn’t have any two-bedroom units at open. I think they had only four in the entire place. We waited around a lot, so the staff wasn’t as helpful as we found at the other places we visited.

Provider Response

Thank you for taking the time to not only consider and tour the Amethyst Gardens but to also create the time to give us your feedback. We are very sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. We would like the opportunity to find out more information in order to answer any remaining questions you have. We have four very experienced Sales Counselors on staff and there is always room for constructive feedback. We do have apartment availability in the Amethyst Gardens. Again, we would love the opportunity to discuss our apartment availability and any addition questions you may still have. Our top priority is to deliver the best quality services and care for our residents. Please contact me directly at 623-974-5848 or dgraf@seniorlifestyle.com.

At Amethyst, it seems like the caregivers are attentive. The facility is secure, so my mother can’t wander. The room that she has is facing a garden where they have many flowers, which is very pleasant. Their dining set up is fine, and the food is good. My mother said that she felt comfortable in this facility. She is very happy there, and I’m very happy with it. Also, it is the only place I found that has all-inclusive pricing.

The staff is very caring and the grounds are very attractive. Unfortunately the service and quality of food in the dining room has declined substantially. Unusually long waits for dirty tables to be bused and reset and for a waitress/waiter to take your order are normal. It is very challenging for seniors to spend an hour and a half to two hours at lunch and dinner. Breakfast is a madhouse and a 45 minute wait for a simple order is common. The quality of the food varies significantly. Don't choose this facility for your parent(s) until they commit to providing a better experience in the dining room.

Thank you for taking time to provide us with input from your experiences here. We were disappointed to learn you did not have a more positive experience, and would appreciate the chance to learn how we could become a five-star rating. At Amethyst, the staff was very friendly, the apartments looked nice, and there were lots of activities. The residents said they really like it there, so that was nice. We did look at the menu, which was really nice. They have a very nice dining room. The rooms were very well equipped and clean. It looked like they had been redecorated and repainted, and the carpet was new. I would urge people to go and tour the place and talk to the residents there, too.

I thought Amethyst was really nice. We had a tour and we had lunch there, but they sent a nurse to evaluate my mother and she did not like the nurse. The nurse was entirely inappropriate, so that kind of ruined the deal. The grounds were beautiful, and the cafeteria was clean. I would like to live there myself if I could. It was beautiful.

Provider Response

My name is Dennis Graf, Executive Director at the Amethyst, and I was very happy to read your thoughts and kind words about our community. It is a beautiful community with luscious landscaping and our residents really enjoy residing here. I certainly hope you enjoyed your lunch and the tour you had of the community. I am disappointed your experience with the nurse was not a positive one as all of our nurses are well trained both on the clinical and customer service sides of the house. Since you did not elaborate on what was the cause of the bad experience, I would like to encourage you to contact me personally at 623-974-5848, ext. 2211 so you could discuss the details with me. This would give me the opportunity to provide some additional training in the areas that were not favorable to you and help me to make sure we correct these problems, so we do not encounter them again in the future. You can also email me at dgraf@seniorlifestyle.com. I am looking forward t o hearing from you and once again I would like to apologize for your unfavorable experience.

Amethyst is just a beautiful community at a good price. If by some accident your money runs out, there are programs that could let you stay there. They have apartments and studios, and the apartments are amazing. The people are very nice.

Out of the places I've visited, the one I like the most is Amethyst Senior Living. What I liked about them was that they were very dog friendly and that the place was very light and bright. I liked the people who showed us around. We had a really good dinner there.

We were ready to move my mom into Amethyst. They had a beautiful studio apartment ready, and she was within four days of moving, but she had a terrible turn for the worst, and we decided that she was not moving; then, she suddenly became much better. They were wonderful. Caroline, the hospitality guest person, showed us a couple of different apartments. The place was beautiful and spacious with lots of skylights and indoor lights. It was beautiful. It was very well-appointed and affordable. My mom and five guests went for a luncheon, so we all had the food; you could order anything on the menu as part of the price of living there, and it was exceptional. I would not have hesitated if she had been more willing.

The positives I saw about Amethyst were that the staff was very friendly, and the residents seemed very happy. The rooms were a little dated, but they were nice and roomy. The grounds were very pretty, too.

Provider Response

Thank you for your positive comments and I am pleased your interactions with the staff were good. We pride ourselves with providing excellent customer service to everyone which includes our residents and visitors. Being that The Arbor is an older community the rooms are a bit dated but we ensure they are well kept, to include maintenance where needed, paint and new carpet and flooring when needed. The grounds are well kept as well as this a commodity we feel really contributes to our community. I am glad you had a good experience and please feel free to contact me to discuss any further concerns you may have. I can be reached at 623-974-5848, ext. 2211.

I did not like Amethyst at all. It was huge. They had 90 some rooms and they didn't have enough caregivers. They wouldn't come and get you for meals. If anybody had dementia, there's no way they would be able to find where they need to go for meals because it was huge. They had directed instructions, playing games, and an afternoon movie with popcorn.

Linda110566450 September 04, 2015

I visited this facility

I really liked Amethyst. I liked the surroundings, I liked that it was on one level; it was not a "go up an elevator, find my apartment, and get lost while I am trying to do it" atmosphere. And the gal was very helpful. She told me that when I am ready, if I was interested, I can even put a deposit down to save a place. None of the other places said that. It was get in here right now or else. They were much more caring and helpful than any of the other places that I have visited. I took the tour and saw the facilities, the lunch room, and everything. I saw the apartments, and they have the nicest assisted living apartments than any other places that I have seen. It was more than just one room; it was very nice. I didn't see anyone really doing activities basically at the time of day that I was there. My mother would not even join in to do any of the activities anyway. She can hardly see, so she is going to need more care than an assisted living.

The dining room was very open, and very bright with windows around, it was not a walled-in place, and it was right off of the main lobby. It was like going into a really nice restaurant. It was just very nice, very bright, and very cheery. It did not feel like just a room; it wasn't cafeteria style either. So many of these places are cafeteria style, but this was an actual sit down and order off the menu. Yes, somebody could go get their food and tray if they are in a walker or something, but you still have to know what is up in the cafeteria line. This was very nice. I guess she told me that they had two specials a day, and if they didn't want one of the specials that was being offered that day, they can order directly from the menu. And then, like I said, everything was ground level. It was all kind of in a great, big circle assisted living, and then people who didn't need the assisted part of it were on another side of the street. And there were lots of trees and grass. I've been to some of these places where you have to go up to the third floor in an elevator, then go find your apartment, look out the window, and see the parking lot. This one was like being at home almost. You had a little patio where you could go out to sit and have coffee, see the grass and trees, and you didn't see parking lots or parking covered roofs or get lost trying to find the elevator. This was a perfect place. I would recommend anybody going to see this place. And it was less expensive than some of the other ones. I was extremely impressed with it. The lobby was like walking into an exclusive hotel. It had a fireplace if needed for the winter; it was just beautiful.

The people were very nice at Amethyst. The staff answered all our questions, and they entertained us right away. I felt they were doing the best for us. Their dining room was very nice, elegant, and very inviting for someone that would be a resident there. We saw the food, and that looked very inviting as well. They have a long list of things that the residents can do.

Amethyst looked alright, but we just didn't see much of it. It was just a quick in and out because we were in a hurry. We went in for lunch, and then we came back out. The food was fine. It was good, and we didn't have any food that we didn't like. The dining setup was more like a restaurant than a cafeteria.

Provider Response

As the Executive Director, I am sorry you did not get to see our beautiful twenty-eight acres in its entirety along with our spacious apartments. Our campus is luscious as we have fully developed citrus trees, beautiful tall pines and many fountains which make a walk on the campus quite enjoyable. I am happy you found our food to be good and that our dining setting resembles a restaurant setting as this provides the atmosphere we want our residents to enjoy at meal times. It provides them with time to socialize and also gives the management team the opportunity to visit and check in with our residents. Since your visit was so short I would like to invite you back to take a tour of the campus, look at some of apartments and meet the management team. Please feel free to contact our Marketing Team or you can contact me personally at 623-974-5848. I will be glad to set up a tour for you. Thank you for the feedback and I look forward to seeing you back at The Amethyst.

I can never thank the staff enough for what you did for my Mother. The staff got my mother and I through a difficult time when my Mom first arrived. I truly never had to worry about my mother because the caregivers were always there for her and were always ready to respond to her needs. It was comforting knowing my mother was in good hands and safe. I highly recommend this facility.

I've looked at Amethyst Senior Living, and I love it. It's a very nice place, and it's kept very clean. All the staff knew the residents by name, and I was very impressed with it. The rooms are beautiful. My daughter went with me, they took her to the Alzheimer's section, and she told me it was very nice. I was very impressed with it. Pets are also allowed in this facility. They have a hairdresser and a cafe like a little Starbucks that is open from 10-2. They also do games.

I went to Amethyst and I don't like it. They seemed to be disorganized. I had an appointment to see them and the person I had an appointment with wasn't available. The person who gave me the tour was nice, but I don't think that is what she usually does and didn't know exactly what I was there for. They had a pool, but it is very small and you can only use it when you were approved by somebody there. The food was tasteless. It was a pretty, but I don't think the people that lived there gets to use the grounds.

Provider Response

As the Executive Director I would like to apologize for the unsatisfactory experience you had while visiting the Amethyst. We pride ourselves with making sure all visitors have a positive experience while visiting our community, that tours go well and if appointments are set we are there to meet you. Since I am unware of what day you visited, it is difficult for me to explain the mix up with the appointment however, I am glad our staff member was pleasant and at least attempted to tour you through our community. In regards to our pool, the pool is utilized by our residents and you have to be assessed by our Wellness Staff prior to using it while alone but this is done for our residents safety, as that is always our number one concern. Thank you for your comment about our nice grounds. We have twenty eight acres of beautiful property and our resident do enjoy taking walks on the pathways, walking their dogs or just sitting out on the back patio enjoying the weather. In regards to the food being tasteless, I am sorry you did not have a good dining experience while visiting. Our Dining Staff strives to put out quality meals every day and for the most part are quite successful. I would really like to encourage you to return to our community, meet with me personally to tour and to have lunch. I am quite sure you will find the experience enjoyable. Thanks, Dennis Graf, Executive Director. 623-974-5848, dgraf@seniorlifestyle.com

Amethyst was more like her home that she left. We chose this place as it would be easy access for us, and the floor plan was excellent. I know she takes part in several of the activities. But if I was going to say anything that they might improve would be with communication with us. If we have a problem we call them, we’ve only received like two calls from them about my mother-in-law, but other than it’s just been status quo.

Caring99270450 September 30, 2014

My case manager recommended The Amethyst. It had much more quality and it was a lot more expensive. I had her show me a patio apartment which had a den. I have access to a patio so I take my dog out and it could sit outside. The set up is is very comfortable because it had the access to the outside without walking forever. For me, that was a perfect floor plan.

They deliver your food to your apartment if you want. It’s less like an institution. The staff seemed helpful. They have a bus service because I’ve seen them driving around town. They did have covered parking which looked to me like it ran around the building so you didn’t have to go into a big parking lot. I thought that was nice. If I went to a place, that’s probably where I would go. It seemed top notch to me.

We visited and toured Amethyst Senior Living. We were able to see the rooms and got a briefing on the entire organization and how they are organized to keep the people with limited faculties and where they keep the normal people, that sort of thing. The rooms were very, very pleasant, very clean, and very good. We were very impressed. The staff was extremely friendly, and the residents looked busy.

I am/was a resident of this facility

It has been a year and a half since we moved in at Amethyst Gardens. The room that we are in is very spacious and very nice. It has a full kitchen facility so we can cook here. It overlooks a grassy area surrounded with a sidewalk were we could walk our dog. The facility is very nicely decorated. It's completely refurbished because it used to be a grand resort. The food has really gone downhill since we've moved in, but my wife and I rarely go down for breakfast. We also have plumbing and air-conditioning issues, but overall it's not a bad place.

I had to give one star to rate, or else I would have given 0 stars. My father moved in one month ago and as of today is out of there, thank heavens. He was promised care and what he got was neglect. He has a severe breathing problem and went here for the "assisted living" facility. The elevator was down twice in one month. Instead of having staff helping the residents, if needed, they told him to walk down a very long hall and get another elevator. It took him a half hour to get to his apartment, and his breathing was compromised. The bathroom has tubs made into showers, they are not wide enough for shower chairs and he had to bend over quite far to pull up the shower lever. For someone 97 years of age with a severe breathing problem, this can be dangerous. The food had fair to bad, the service in the dining hall was horrible. He often had to wait a half hour to 45 minutes to get waited on and then his order would be wrong, they ran out of food and the meals were not nutritious. They charged $60 for hospice, for what they called a consultation fee, even though the hospice workers said they never consulted. We talked with a woman who had fallen over the carpet strip 3 times, had complained each time and yet no one had even come to look at the problem. I could go on but I'm sure you can understand how bad this place is for care.

DO NOT MOVE HERE. Find another place so you or your loved one can have care, safety and some quality of life.

My Dad was able to move out after a month. They charge a $2500 up front fee so many people can not make that decision.

When was the last time you were blown away by good service? I said good service not bad service. Well, welcome to the Amethyst ! My dad has some physical limitations and cannot get around like he used to. We were looking for a place where he could do things for himself but assistance was there if he needed it. We were brought to the building called the gardens. This is a very large building and somewhat confusing to find your way around. My dad has always been a proud man who never depended on anyone else for anything. We visited 2 other places before the Amethyst and he had complaints at both. One he said people were just in their rooms waiting to die. The other he said felt like a hospital with carpeting. My dad can be a tough critic obviously. On this visit we were invited to lunch in the dining room. We were seated at a table reserved for us which is a nice touch. We were given a menu that looked like a menu you would get in a restaurant. The menu was full of choices. Anything you could want was there on the menu. My dad ordered fried chicken and I ordered the chef salad. My dad joked that I had finally brought him somewhere that did not feed him Swansons frozen dinner. He liked his meal as did I. The salad was very fresh and full of ingredients not just lettuce. Our waitress was a young lady named Sarah and she was excellent. She knew we were there as new people and took the time to make sure we were well taken care of. I did notice she was not doing this just for us but for everyone she was serving. In other words I did not feel like she was doing anything to woo us to move in. At the end of the meal Sarah offered us dessert and they had my dads all time favorite peach pie. He took this as a sign he had found his new home. We met the managers who were actually working in the dining room. They could not have been nicer. This really impressed me. The managers work with the rest of the people and not just bark orders. I do not recall seeing any mangers in the dining rooms at either of the other two places we visited. To me that shows commitment on the mangers part. Believe me it is rare in todays customer service ways. I did notice that it was an easy natural flow for the managers and staff. They were not giving us any special treatment because they wanted to get our business. I did ask a few questions of staff members to pry a little bit. They told me they loved what they do/ Another staff member said it was her second home. Another told me her managers were the best she ever worked for and being in the restaurant business it has never been her experience anywhere else. They probably thought I was a detective. A little background on me. I have worked for a firm that specializes in disaster damage control for corporate clients. I bill myself as a customer service expert. for nearly 30 years. Believe me the Amethyst is a top option if you are looking for a home for a senior family member.

My husband and I went to the Amethyst 2 weeks ago to see the environment before bringing my mother in law. The place is fine but we were so turned off by the woman giving the tour we just could not see our family member there. She was not unkept or anything like that she was just really really bad at her job and here is why. She had an attitude of elitism that was just horrid. She was extremely rude to other staff that was working. She talked to them like she was above them and they were her servants and at her beck and call with a snap of her fingers. I felt for the other people working. My husband looked at me and I just shrugged my shoulders. This behavior made us wonder what was really going on there. We finished the tour and on the way out were invited back with my mother in law to have lunch and tour again. We said we would. My husband asked if we could tour with a wheelchair and she said yes. Yesterday we went back for 2 reasons 1 to show my mother in law and 2 to see if it was just a bad day. In short, NO it was not just a bad day. My advice to the sales people is to treat the people you work with like you would like to be treated. People know when you are being nasty. We didn't get past your behaviors and condescending ways and we will not be moving in.

My wife's grandmother lives there and was hospitalized on Saturday night 4/19 and when she returned last night, 4/22. Her safe that contained everything of value and took 2 men to move in, was stolen from her apartment. Understand this is has locked doors from the outside unless you have a key. So what is the management doing about it? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. They don't want to believe it was an inside job but the other residents are seniors and are highly unlikely to move a safe not to mention who would know she wasn't in her room??? The staff that's who.

Provider Response

As the Executive Director I am deeply saddened by this event. I have and always been committed to the safety and security of our residents. In order to limit these types of occurrences we require background checks for any new hires in addition to enforcing a human resources policy for when these types of incidents are reported. Beyond conducting an internal investigation we also contact the authorities immediately in the case of a theft. We will continue to take the personal safety and the security of our residents seriously. If you have any feedback please bring it to our attention directly. I have been going on tours with my lifelong friend for about a month or so looking for a place with assisted living but still close enough to easily visit for family and friends. A lot of places look good from the start but when you really start to look deeper they fall apart somewhere along the line. A few weeks ago we went to visit the amethyst and we liked it. We got the usual tour and information that you get wherever you go...nothing special. UNTIL we watched the staff interact with each other and they did not know we were watching. That changed everything for us. We were sitting in a room near a small self service beverage area in the building. A staff member walked by and stopped to ask us if he could get anything for us and introduced himself as Jeff from the dining department. None of us asked for anything but it was so nice just to be offered. He invited us to lunch in a very upbeat and proud way. This left a great impression on us. Next we watched him and what we think was waiters and waitresses talk for a moment and saw the one thing that we never saw anyplace else. The staff was eager to do as asked and it was a very polite professional attitude from all of them. I nudged my friend and asked if she heard what I had just heard. Unfortunately she did not for whatever reason. When we returned the next week for a second tour and visit we ran into Jeff again. He remembered us and came over to see if we had moved in and we told him we had not as yet. He again was so nice and genuine and offered us a full explanation of how the food and dining room worked. He checked with us during our lunch and even walked us out to the room where we were the first time near the beverage area. We watched a lot of things while eating our lunch and we saw other staff in the dining room and they all seemed to be enjoying what they were doing. We noticed Jeff talking to some people in the dining rooms and taking care of things I really think he made the difference for us and we did choose the amethyst for the move. I think if any one is looking for a place like this they would be amiss if they do not look into the amethyst.

My parents chose The Amethyst for them. They did get two bedrooms, a living room with a little backyard for their pet, so they did like that. Their place is approximately 1000 square feet. It is big and that's why they like it. It was a little less expensive than some of the other places. I didn’t try their food, but my parents did and they liked it. Their dining room is very nice. I wasn’t able to observe any activities, but I know they have bingo. They have this horse racing that they talk about. They also have a van and a limousine that has taken my mother to several appointments. In the facility, there are a lot of things going on.

my grandma was placed at amethyst gardens about two years ago....she was 89 at the time....her caregivers were wonderful....but that all i can say about the place that is good....the med techs have no idea about dispensing medications.... they sent her to the hospital one night at 9.... and told her she needed to get a taxi home at the age of 91 at 11 o'clock....the director is rude wen he was confronted about this.... the nurse it sent her there should have never sent her there then mergency room didn't even know why she was there... the business department is also extremely rude and unable to do their jobs the way they should be done.... everything is always a fight to get it right there... if they treat my grandma this that it makes me wonder how the other residents are treated... that have no one to look out for them... luckily my grandma have family to look out to make sure she's taken care of... course all the stuff going to be nice to get her in there but watch once u do... the director is very unprofessional and so the entire staff except for the caregivers... I wouldn't wish this place on anyone!!!!!

The facilities at Amethyst Gardens are very nice and the food is good. The staff was very accommodating and very helpful. They have crafts and a lot of beads work to do.

Mom is at Amethyst November 16, 2013

I am a friend or relative of resident

We visited the Amethyst for the first time in August. My mom was living with us for about 6 months until we had to find another option. My wife and I looked at a few places then we brought my mom to see the Amethyst. She liked it right away. When we were on a tour with my mom it was very different then when my wife and I went on a tour without my mom being there. The first time we thought the people giving the tour were very nice and professional. This time around we were wondering why they were talking to my mom like she was a child. They were condescending and authoritative towards her. It screamed fake. It was extremely off putting. It was not only 1 but 2 of the people in their welcome department. My mom is 84 years old and they treated her like a child that was caught with a hand in the cookie jar. It reminded me of buying a used car and they were "explaining" things away. Again it screamed fake. My mom said afterwards that it was ok but to my wife and I it was not ok at all. I did not want to move her in after this but she wanted to so I kept quiet. After we decided to move her in we quickly found out that the treatment my mom got at first from the welcome department was NOT indicative of the rest of the people at the Amethyst. Everyone else seemed to be very cordial and professional. In particular the staff that cared for my mom was superb. We worked with the adjustment period with my mom by visiting often and this never changed. We always were made to feel welcome and more importantly my mom was happy there. On the excellent side of the experience, my mom wanted us to have dinner with her and we did not even know we could do that. When I asked if we could have dinner with her not only did they say yes but actually walked us over to the desk and took care of our meals for us rather then just saying yes and not helping us actually know how to go about the whole thing. It was a very nice touch to be given service like that. the food was really good as my mom said it was. Our server was Meaghan and all I can say about her was she was a delight. Our interaction with all of the staff and even other residents has been wonderful from the start. It is too bad that we had the start with their welcome department that we did. otherwise it has been great for my mom and us.

My mother has been at Amethyst Arbors for 5 months. The food is pretty good, a nice variety - and overall the staff is very friendly. My concerns are that they have a hard time retaining a nurse and care givers so my mother's medication was constantly wrong. This is SO important. The current nursing staff there is very disorganized. The place is clean for the most part - the entry way of course is very clean, but the building is old and showing signs of wear. Maintenance is lacking - it is not kept up very well. Communication seems to be another downfall of this place. No one seems to know what another person is doing - become VERY frustrating. People say things are taken care of, but then they are not, then you tell someone else, and it's not - communication is severely lacking. As far as retirement homes goes, I would say this one rates better than most - but if you place a loved one there just a couple of things to note: The sale people are your best friend until you move in - then try to get something done.....stay on top of the staff as far as medication goes. The grounds are nice, but watch out for the scorpions (they have a problem there) and don't worry about the food. The chef and dining hall is the nicest I have seen. One more thing - no smoking signs everywhere, yet the Executive Director and other staff members openly smoke in front of the building. Not good.

Provider Response

Thank you for your comments. We appreciate the positive recognition but take your constructive feedback very seriously. Quality care is always our top priority. Any additional insights that you can provide would be helpful to make sure that we deliver excellent services to our residents. We recognize that it is difficult to deliver on this commitment unless we are communicating effectively. It is my expectation that we will be timely and transparent in our communication. The no smoking policies have been reviewed and reinforced. It is important that we are respectful and professional for our many residents that call The Amethyst Home. Please do not hesitate to contact Dan Summers at 623-210-0648. Dan is the Regional Director of Operations responsible for oversight of The Amethyst and would be very interested in hearing from you directly to more specifically understand how we can improve the quality of services and care.

My mother is a resident at Amethyst. She has beginning Alzheimer's but still lives independently. We (her children) thought it was the most beautiful place we looked at, and our experience with Amethyst has been superlative. Although my mother didn't want to move anywhere from her home, she now tells me every time I talk to her how glad she is that "she" chose Amethyst. That's fine with us. The care and the food (!) are excellent.

CaringSon3 September 16, 2013

I visited this facility

The Amethyst has three facilities: the independent living, assisted living and memory care facility. The Arbor, which is their assisted living facility, is the one we visited. They have good staff there. The rooms that they have are not as quite as big as the ones in the other facility we saw. It is a nice place though. It seemed like it is spread out a little bit more and it is a lot bigger place than the other facility. It is not too bad though. They have different wings and each wing meets where the dining room and the assembly area are. My mom doesn't get around too well, so we were thinking that having the dining room and other facilities closer to her apartment would be better.

I do not understand some of these reviews here. My parents have lived at the Amethyst for about a year. My dad has recently been moved due to his advancing memory problems but still at the Amethyst. We would not dream of moving him anywhere else. I used to visit a few times per month but my husband and I recently relocated to Las Vegas area for a promotion at work. Part of the reason we were able to move is that we felt so confident with my parents being taken care of at the Amethyst. In their working years my mom and dad ran a country store business in the Midwest and they always took care of their customers when they came in. They gre accustomed to good service and they knew when it was and was not there. I will admit that at first we were really not too happy with what we were getting compared to what we were told we would get at the Amethyst. But that was about a year ago. There really is no comparison to then and now. Everything has improved immensely. I have watched the staff at the Amethyst care for my mom and dad..my dad can be tough at times but they were the ultimate professionals. The last few times I was there I think was in July and August and they are still getting better. I remember always refusing to eat in the dining rooms when I visited because the food was pretty much hospital food in all ways. That is so far from the case now. Over the last few months I have been very pleased with what I was served and the staff served it with care. It appears that the food and service has made a complete turn around. The nursing staff has been completely improved just keep going in the direction the nursing staff is going and you will have many happy families. My mom enjoys the Bingo and this thing she calls horse races no real horses but I do not really understand what she means by horse races. Anyway she enjoys them. It really is not fair to blame the newer staff members for mistakes of their predecessors. It is obvious they care and are doing sll they can to improve the Amethyst. A good point to show this is when my mom came home from a hospital stay a few months ago she was on a very strict diet per her Dr. I was worried about her remembering to stay on the diet because admittedly she is forgetful and sometimes just stubborn. I went to talk to Jeff the director of the food department and he could not have been more genuinely concerned for her welfare. He went over the options on the menu that would fit into my mothers situation and even offered to give us the nutritional information for those items. He had it to us the very next day. Our concerns were calories, sodium, sugar and saturated fat. It was all there for my mom to see in simple plain manner. It helped her recover as she was supposed to. It made a difference. Another show of real change came when the night care giver came to check on my mom and she was just not feeling herself. She was not ill just I would say depressed about my dad advancing with his memory loss. The care giver sat with my mom and just talked to her for probably longer than she was supposed to. I know she has other things to do but at that time my mom was her concern. My mom called to tell me what she did but did not remember her name. All she knew was she had a blue shirt and long dark hair. I called to try to thank her but who I spoke with could not figure out who it was. So please be fair to the great new staff at the Amethyst they are truly doing the right things on an ongoing basis. Also, remember they are doing the best they can in a difficult situation.

We went to check out Amethyst and we liked it. They were able to provide the things that my mom needed. The staff were caring and friendly. She got a really big room with a living room and bedroom for a good price. The dining room was nice too. There were a lot of everyday game activities like parties, bingo, movie night. They also took the residents shopping several times a week. There was also a swimming pool so it was very active. Although it would be better if they improved the communication.

Provider Response

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments about our community and I am so pleased that your mom has been receiving everything she needs. We always strive to make sure all of our residents receive quality services and remain as active as they want to be. Our Programming Director is highly motivated and works very well with all of our residents and plans events and activities that are exciting for our residents. We are always working on ways to improve communication and I would welcome any ideas you would have to share with me on how we can improve on this process. Please feel free to contact The Amethyst at 623-974-5848 and ask for Dennis Graf, Executive Director. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

if you have a relative here you must be very involved with their care. i have quite a list: My parents missed important appointments because they forgot to get them from their room Before admittance we were told Amethyst can accompany my folks to any appointments- we found out after the fact that they don't, another outside company does The RN, who appears quite nice and involved, was four hours late to our first appointment, never less than two hours late to any appointment and forgot our most recent appointment The food is not well done contrary to their promises to upgrade-very bland Food service is glacially slow-getting a cup of coffee, with the pot 20 feet from our table can take 10 minutes with reminders and even the simplest orders very often get mixed up by a generally confused staff A staff member showed up late one evening and was surprised to see family members there. When asked why she was there she made up a very poor excuse. I believe my folks were about to be ripped off. They say they like animals but really don't promote them therapeutically The residents have tried to get music pumped at meals and other times, like a little Sinatra or something but get phony excuses from management. That makes for a very quiet place devoid of energy. They have been trying for months. The first people you meet are pleasant but none are experts in senior living. They justs recite what Amethyst does. After my parents left Amethyst and I did some research I only then realized that I probably never met someone who understood Altsheimers or was clinically trained in the care of senior issues. There is more but I think you get it. As I stated at the beginning, if you have family at Amethyst that aren't great at advocating for themselves you must be actively involved in their care at a minimum on a weekly basis.

Provider Response

We appreciate this feedback immensely. As the Executive Director at The Amethyst I am disappointed that you did not have a better experience and I would like to share some of the recent improvements. Communication with residents and family members is a top priority. Clear and honest communication is paramount to a safe and fulfilling life at The Amethyst. While our transportation department is available to provide a safe and secure ride to and from medical appointments, our care staff unfortunately cannot leave the community to accompany residents to and from appointments. We rely on third party companion service providers in our local community to assist with these services if our residents require them. We have looked closely at those providers we utilize to make certain that they are consistently living up to our expectations and those of our residents. We have put great efforts into our dining services department in an effort to provide the highest quality food and most exceptional service possible. Our Executive Chef and his team have created a new menu program with greater variety. The menu is re-evaluated routinely based on feedback from the food committee. In addition we offer daily specials for lunch and dinner! The service staff is now under the leadership of an experienced Dining Room Manager. We at Senior Lifestyle and The Amethyst place great emphasis on employing dedicated team members and creating environments that enrich and fulfill to the lives of our residents. I would love the opportunity to further explain the programs that we have in place to do just that. Please feel free to contact Dennis Graf, Executive Director, to discuss these changes and how we could have delivered a better experience for you and your loved one.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I am currently at Amethyst Gardens. They provide transportation but they charge $10 if you don't have a schedule on their calendar. I don't think it's right. They charge that much even if I'm only going to go one or two miles away. Everything here is close by. They don't take you back to get your hair done because they have somebody to do it here. One of the reasons I moved here is because they said they would take residents anywhere within a 10-mile radius. They also said they would provide me proper diet management because my medical condition has to do with my ability to eat the right food at the right time. Just about everything they said they would give about accommodation is just not so. They changed managers about 6 times within the last year and a half. It also took a while for them to start changing the menu for it to have more options. I just want to get out of here.

Provider Response

We are very sorry to learn that you have not had a better experience to-date. We do our best to insure all transportation needs are met for all of our residents. We have reviewed our transportation policy and the $10.00 charge was recently eliminated. We have also updated our menu to offer greater variety for our residents. We are sorry for the delay in rolling out the new menu as we took our time to gather feedback from our resident food committee. If you have questions about your diet and our ability to accommodate your needs, please talk with Jeff Cantor, our Dining Services Director, he is always happy to assist our residents. In addition, you can also discuss your diet concerns with Carol Walczyk, Wellness Director. Amethyst Senior Living has been managed by Senior Lifestyle since January 2012. There were some initial changes in management but we are extremely pleased to have Dennis Graf as our Executive Director leading our dedicated team of professionals. Dennis has an open door policy and welcomes feedback from residents or family members! We appreciate your honest feedback and would be grateful if you would communicate with us on how we can make your experience more enjoyable.

My father lived in Amethyst Gardens for ten days. The rooms were spacious and fantastic. However, they were very inattentive in checking if he has taken his medications, they let him leave the facility to get his groceries and the food was not very good. I guess they were understaffed that they forgot to check my dad's medication for three days in his ten-day stay there.

When my mother first lived there it was a great place with great staff. She had to have several surgeries while she was there and when she was released back to Amethyst the staff always took great care of her. However, after about a year and a half of living there a lot of turnover in the staff started to occur and that was not a good thing. The level of attention and care she experienced went down because the staffing levels couldn't be maintained and many of the staff weren't as good as previous staff members. There were still staff members who did a great job, but, again, without enough staff to take care of the residents things took much longer to get done and there wasn't as much time spent with my mother as there had been. It's also very hard on residents, especially those like my mother who had some mental issues to get used to new staff members all the time. Eventually my mother had to move to a different location within the Amethyst that was for dementia and alzheimer's patients and she did receive great care there as they did really try to keep the same staff and the staff that did work there did a great job and really cared for and about the residents.

Amethyst gardens, although very nice on the outside has been less than satisfactory for my family. Incudents of theft from my grandma have occurred leaving our family void of precious heirloom jewelry. The front desk staff has been quite rude on occasion, one occurrence on my grandmothers 86th birthday. Finally most recently their medicane distribution service has fouled up doses, schedules, and staff are not following written directions. There needs to be some serious changes with the management of Amethyst before I will ever approve.
