The 10 Best Assisted Living Facilities in Oshkosh, WI for 2024

Oshkosh is located between Lake Winnebago and Lake Butte des Morts. It’s home to 67,000 people, of whom 14.1% are in the 65+ age group. The city is popular with seniors who enjoy its diversity of outdoor activities, such as fishing on the lakes and wandering in the gardens at the Paine Art Center. Oshkosh is also a city of museums, with the EAA Aviation Museum and the Oshkosh Public Museum being particular favorites.

For some seniors, the aging process makes everyday tasks, such as preparing meals, more challenging. It can also be difficult for seniors to relinquish independence, which is why assisted living communities can be a good compromise. They offer secure environments where staff handle the everyday tasks, leaving seniors to get on with their lives, knowing help is near. Costs for assisted living in Oshkosh, according to the 2020 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, average at $4,908 per month. This is almost 11% more than the state average and 13% more than the national average.

This guide covers senior living costs in more detail. It also discusses the pros and cons of living in Oshkosh and lists some resources for families considering assisted living.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Oshkosh

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has overall responsibility for ensuring assisted living facilities in the state adhere to its standards. The department issues licenses to high-quality assisted living communities and revokes them from facilities that violate standards. Some monitoring work is conducted at a local level by the Long-Term Care Ombudsman who can influence licensing decisions.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Oshkosh

  • According to Sperling’s Best Places, the cost of living in Oshkosh is very favorable when compared to the national average of 100. The city’s score is 81.7, which is also better than the state average of 90.9, indicating that seniors’ incomes can go further in Oshkosh. The exception is health costs, which are above average. However, other categories, such as transportation, are significantly less costly when compared to the state and country averages.
  • Although there aren’t many hospitals in and around Oshkosh, the primary medical facility, Aurora Medical Center, is rated as high-performing in treating Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disease and knee replacement surgery by U.S. News & World Report. Oshkosh is also less than 90 minutes from the state’s best hospitals in Green Bay, Madison and Milwaukee.
  • Seniors should expect the winters to be very cold in this part of the world, with lows of 10 degrees Fahrenheit in January being common. However, temperatures in the spring can be very pleasant, and highs of 81 degrees in the summer months aren’t unusual. There can be a significant amount of snowfall between December and March, so seniors will need to be prepared for this.
  • One of the many reasons seniors choose to live in Oshkosh is its below-average crime rates. According to Neighborhood Scout, violent crime in the city is 2.91 per 1,000 residents, compared to the U.S. average of 4. The figures for property crime also make more comfortable reading at 16.37 compared to 21. It’s worth noting that crime is usually associated with specific areas. In Oshkosh, these tend to be the city center and some neighborhoods bordering Lake Winnebago.
  • There are several low-cost transportation solutions that can help seniors get around Winnebago County. These include free transportation in wheelchair-accessible vehicles provided to Medicaid beneficiaries by MTM Inc. and the reduced cab fares offered to adults aged 60 and over who qualify for the services provided by Oshkosh Senior Dial-A-Ride.
