Reviews of Shenandoah Place

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident
Shenandoah Place is a very clean, nice place. They do not offer physical therapy nor a selection of food or many activities. This is where my mother is living in right now. They are extremely understaffed. They have 22 beds and a lot of times there are only two aides, and their shower days are seven days a week. Trying to get these folks up for their meals and showered, answering bells, helping people get dressed, and taking them to the bathroom is a bit trying. She will go out when they have movie time, but they show old movies. My mother is 83 years old, but she watches new movies that come out on TV. They play bingo, which she loves. A church just came in the other day and had a small service and singing. They play physical therapy games where they have balloons and bounce them around for hand-eye coordination. They need more staff to help the residents. The staff is unhappy and when the staff is unhappy, the residents are unhappy because of the level of care that they are given. The food is so-so. There are some things that my mom doesn’t eat. They definitely need to do something about their activities. Most of the time, they all go to their rooms and some of the women said they go to sleep at 7 or 7:30 because there is nothing to do. They don’t need to have a lot of night-time activities, but maybe one evening a week, something should go on.

I visited this facility
Shenandoah Place was wonderful. The leaders of the place, director, and the assistant director were fabulous people and very detailed. The place itself is dynamically nice. The rooms were huge, they are like living rooms, and people can decorate them anyway they want. The facility itself is large, airy, and very pleasant. It’s a regular assisted living room with no other things in it -- no kitchenette -- but the rooms were very large and attractive, and you can put your own stuff in it. They were doing some Halloween decorations when I was there, every week they have musicians coming in, and they have a chapel service once a week if anybody wants to attend.

I visited this facility
The facility was beautiful, partially thanks to the amazing view (miles and miles of green fields and forest), and partially thanks to the warm antique interior. It didn't feel like a hospital, it felt like a home. From what we were shown, the food was homecooked by a talented chef, there was plenty of entertainment (performers, such as musicians and dancers, visited at least 3 times a week), and everything, especially the individual rooms, looked cozy and comfortable. We were impressed, but the reason why we couldn't use Shenandoah Place, and the reason why I've rated it 4 stars, is because the location is so distant. There is a small town next to it, but anybody coming from any reasonable location in Virginia would have to drive a considerable distance to reach the facility. Also, there was something lonely about it being in the middle of such a wide, unpopulated expanse. We weren't sure if father would like it, so we passed. It's easy to imagine someone finding a home there, though.
