I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father moved into Rhodes Estates. I chose it because my best friend had her grandmother there, so I have an inside personal opinion of the place. I like the fact that there's just a small clientele, only 15 residents. The thing I don't like about it is that the common living areas are small, but that's just for me. I understand that they do keep them very close-knit. They need that closeness and security. So, for a memory care resident, that's quite perfect. My father is in a companion room. He essentially has his own room, but in between the two rooms is a shared bathroom. They have music and dance classes. They have game days, and they eat together in the dining room. The staff has been great. The facility is very well-maintained and clean.

I visited this facility

I visited Rhodes Estates and right away, I smelled something that was "off." When you go to some nursing homes, they don't have an odor, but this one had somewhat of an odor. It's the assisted living part that I went to visit. The carpeting needed replacing; it's just soiled carpeting. I actually expected worse when I went up there, and it was better than I thought. Of course, it's assisted living and I understand these things. I was shown a room; it was nice and good-sized. It seems to be about the standard design: probably about 350 square feet, clean, and nice. I didn't witness any activities. I just saw some people walking around in walkers and mingling around. It's in the same town where my mom lives, and it's probably a five-minute drive from her. It's handy if she would have visits with relatives and friends in our area. It's also close to a hospital.

I visited this facility

The tour I had with Rhodes Estates was OK. They were accommodating. They have a nice big open dining area and stuff like that. It's definitely an older facility. The rooms were a little bit outdated, like they had old air conditioners in the windows. Also, the carpeting needs to be replaced. If it was a lower price, then I could understand; but their price level was right up there, as high as the other places that we thought were a lot nicer. The staff was very friendly and polite. They basically had the same amenities as all the other places, like you have your food, your aide that would come in and help you bathe if you needed it, and a nurse to pass on meds. There were some residents that were in the dining hall (a few here and there), and they all seemed fine and happy.

I visited this facility

Rhodes Estates didn't impress me. It wasn't clean, and it wasn't as top notch as the other facility I saw. It was an old facility, the people were fine, and they seemed nice. The staff seemed very nice, and they were accommodating when answering our questions.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother in law stayed at Rhodes Estates for 6 years Received good care. Indoor activities were great. They also had short trips to go shopping or for dinner. Office helped with any questions we had. Would recommend Rhodes estates to anyone looking for assisted living While staying there my mother in law ate regularly, took her medicines correctly, and participated in activities.

I visited this facility

I have visited Rhodes Estates on many occasions and I found the facility to be very homey. The staff was very sweet and caring. The residents are well cared for and happy. There was a lot of activities for the residents to do. I was very impressed with the music program for the residents.

I visited this facility

Rhodes Estates is one of the nicest facilities in the area. The staff are so caring and treat the residents like family. Each time I visit, there is always some type of activity occurring. I have witnessed residents practicing playing the bell chimes and perform for other residents and families. What a treat! Not every place is perfect but I would not hesitate to recommend Rhodes Estates.

I visited this facility

Rhodes Estates was nice and clean. The staff who showed us around was very sweet. The rooms were all very clean, and some were really spacious, and some were normal rooms. They had little suites with their own bathroom and shower. When you walked in, it looked like a little hotel as opposed to homey. I talked to several friends with family there who had nothing bad to say.

Not a Modern Facility

I visited this facility

It is hard to rate an overall facility during a few visits. However, there are first impression indicators, which might lead one to believe other problems exist under the surface. One, upon entering the facility, the strong smell of urine was overwhelming. Looking at the existing carpeting, which appears to be old and outdated, one can’t help but believe the pads under the carpet have not been changed for some time. In today’s modern facilities, they don’t even use carpeting to eliminate odors like this. This is clearly not a modern facility. Two, the natural lighting is poor----very poor. This older facility gives off the impression of mood depression because of a lack of nature light. The facility, which was an old business school has never been updated from a construction standpoint and the losers are the patients. This lack of vision only adds to the depressed atmosphere enhanced by the smell once you enter the facility. Three, once you enter the room, which is not a welfare room, but a high paying customer. The smell was unbearable and so strong which only sadden me. Again, the room is wall to wall carpet and I can’t help but feel the carpet and pads have not been changed out or cleaned in a long time. The windows needed to be open immediately to minimize some of the smell, while the bathroom door needed to be closed b/c the smell there was overwhelming. It was sad to leave a friend and loved one at a facility which has not been updated and contains little to no modern immensities for are aging family members.

Other

My parents decided to move into Rhodes Estates Assisted Living facility in 2004. This proved to be a bad mistake. I am a registered nurse in PA and found it necessary to check on them daily to assure of their needs. This facility does not provide proper care on the elderly that need assistance. If you are independent go to an apartment. They are for profit and your money will quickly disappear. My mother stayed there ten years and when she developed end stage dementia went into the hospital they would not take her back nor would they assist into help provide care for her. It was as though she was never a resident there. They want you to believe that they take care of you like family. Such a farce. I found it necessary to report them to PA Dept. of Welfare who provides their licensure for violations. This facility profits off of family in my situation. I was not power of attorney and could not remove my mother. Do Not consider this facility for yourself or your loved ones.
