I visited this facility
Aegis was a nice community. They offered comfortable services, but it just they didn’t appeal to me as much. A lot of those impressions have to do with first impressions. When you walk in, you see a bunch of people sitting around even, though I understand that’s the nature of the community. It’s not a match for mom. Their accommodations were very nice but we didn’t like them for mom because she didn’t like dark rooms and all they have available were rooms that were a little too dark. There’s nothing wrong with it. The people were all great, it’s clean, and inviting.

I am a friend or relative of resident
My dad has been at Aegis for the last couple of years and this year we moved him to another ALF for the following reasons.
1) We kept getting charged for services that were not needed or provided and management refused to adjust the bill. 2) There “points” system is VERY confusing. 3) Though management has been in place for many years there is a HIGH turnover for those staff that actually care for your loved one. 4) They charge a $10,000 deposit, which is the highest in the Bay Area for any ALF’s. 5) Aegis monthly rent is also sustainably higher then other ALF but our experience was that they do offer anything other ALF offer and the services that are different did not make up for the above issues.
In summery I was willing to pay $$$ because I was told Aegis was the best (this mostly from the placement agency….go figure) but we slowly learned that was simply not the case and I could get similar if not better service elsewhere for much less money.

I am a current client of this provider
Aegis of Moraga was chosen by my son for us. The rooms are very nice. They go all out when they have events, renting tables and chairs. If anyone is bored here, it’s not the fault of the agency; it’s the fault of the individual. The staff is very good, management keeps on top of them, and if changes need to be made, they don’t hesitate to do what is best for the clientele. If I have to be somewhere I would say this is a very nice place to be; the weather is nice and it is beautiful setting. There are complaints but nothing of anything major. They work very hard, the interior and the gardens are beautiful, and Moraga California is a very lovely town.

I visited this facility
Aegis of Moraga is a part of a network, so they have other facilities within the San Francisco bay area. It's in the town that I live. I met one of the coordinators and she went over my mom's background, what her current status both medically and emotionally. We talked about the differences between assisted living and skilled nursing, and then she gave me a tour of the facility. She showed me what's available, what they have and what they didn't have. They also have a program for people with limited income. If my mom met that criteria, then she would qualify for some of their least expensive rates. That was really helpful. She provided the forms for us to fill out. I was very impressed with their system in general.

Aegis of Moraga offers both assisted living and dementia care. The assisted living part is good. I have no complaints. The food is excellent, the activities are very good, with a lot going on. But the dementia care, which is what I'm focusing on here, is badly flawed. I give that just one star. I've had residents there and moved every one of them out.
This is a stunning, gorgeous facility. It looks and functions like a beautiful country club. Families of the residents love the ambiance. But my dementia patients were left in their rooms for long periods. And the staff, which seemed to have little experience or skill in handling dementia, had little interaction with them. They didn't notice the changes in mental or physical function that turn into crises. My experience has been that the dementia patients end up spending a lot of time in the ER. I'm not the only one with complaints about the dementia care, either. The doctors we work with also complain that they can't get the staff to follow their instructions.
