I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father is in Walker Methodist Health Center, and it looks clean. They're woefully understaffed and I have nothing against any immigrants coming here, but a lot of times the language barrier is there, and that's tough. He's in there for physical therapy, so they've been helping him with physical therapy, but he's reluctant to do much of it, so it's just not going well. Everybody I talked to there seemed good and they were all nice people. But, when I would call and stuff, I had a problem getting through because of the language barrier. And then I think I think everybody is short-staffed and we just need more people working there, and these people certainly need to be paid more money. They seem to park everybody in a circle so one person can watch them in front of the TV because of the short staffing, and then sometimes somebody will come in and play the piano, which is very nice. I think all the residents appreciate that. I think you pay a lot of money and unfortunately, it doesn't go to the right places. It goes right to the top and unfortunately, the elderly suffers.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

A friend of mine lives at the Minneapolis location. After discovering he tested positive for COVID he was asked to quarantine for 14 days. In that time, no one reached out and showed any concern. He called multiple people over two days to find out protocol once he was done with the quarantine and no one has returned his calls. This place is very unprofessional. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Walker Methodist Health Center was nice and very organized and I was amazed how well they did to my father. I couldn't have gotten him back walking. They knew what they're doing, they knew how to treat it and they accomplished the goal. The staff was very nice. They did the job they needed to do. The food was mostly good. They had some group activities like practicing and challenging him to try to remember things and for his memory skills.

Other

Room was dirty, dingy. Furniture was old and used. We reported dirt on serving tray for 5 weeks. Never cleaned. They never vacuumed under the bed entire stay. Staff needs more training on equipment usage. Equipment was often out of order and had to wait for availability of lift equipment. Wait times for call lights to be answered were often too long. Some staff are very good and they are over worked. Some of the staff do not speak English very clearly and they are hard to understand. That is frustrating for both the patient and the staff. Food was terrible, cold. Food service is unorganized. One person fixes one tray at a time and aids stand and watch and deliver one tray at a time. Takes forever while people wait for meals. Choose a different facility if you can. We do not recommend it. Complaints seemed to make things worse. I was there for re-hab so did not participate in activities.

My brother has been living in assisted living at Walker Place since August. It is perfect for him. It's a vibrant community with independent and assisted living. The staff is wonderful, caring, and supportive. I can go to them if I have any concerns about my brother, and they're taken care of right away. They have a fitness room, a chapel, a medical center next door, meals, metro mobility that can take residents to doctors' appointments, and outings where they use a van. They also have laundry and someone who does weekly cleaning. He has an apartment with a kitchenette, living room, bedroom, and bathroom.

I visited this facility

I really liked Walker Methodist. The location was great because it was right in the heart of Minneapolis. It had recently been redone and was beautiful. It was very comfortable, but the bathroom was small, and that was a deal breaker. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly.

My father was admitted to the Walker Methodist health center after we removed him from another facility in Bloomington. My sister-in-law was given a tour and was very impressed with the facility. I was there the day he was admitted and the staff was overwhelmingly courteous and helpful. I also stopped in once a week at different times of the day to check on my father. He was ALWAYS very well taken care of. He was clean, well fed and was happy. Our main goal was to get my father physical and speech therapy so he would be able to return to his own home. He received excellent physical and speech therapy from the staff. They were all on board and knew exactly what help he needed. When we admitted my father we were told that the food is not the best, but they were working on getting better tasting meals. I was very surprised by this because the food was good. The meals were very nutritious and good. My father is a great cook and he had nothing bad to say about any of his meals. They had several staff members bringing people their food and would always come by and ask if they needed more milk, coffee or anything. My father was never left alone or unattended at any time. The staff always knew where their patients were. I loved the fact that they called my dad by his first name and even knew a few things about him which made him feel more comfortable on his first day. This is the third health care facility that my father has been to over the past few years. I can tell you that are some poor facilities out there. The Walker outshines them all! My father was able to return to his home after 6 weeks of therapy. We were told that he may decline a bit after he returns to his home. This was so not the case. Dad is walking great, talking better and is a healthy and happy man. It takes a great team of staff working together to accomplish these things and I can't say enough good things about this facility. I just hope the Walker is still around when I need care.

My father in law was admitted to the memory care unit on the third floor. I was impressed by the website and took a tour of the facility so I would know exactly what care he would be receiving. I was really impressed when I first walked in. It was a clean and friendly environment. I noticed it was decorated in subdued soothing colors and the staff was friendly. I took a tour of all the floors and the patients all seemed to be happy. I viewed the rooms and also the main dining area. I noticed the staff called the patients by name and were very hands on when it came to their needs. The therapy he received was excellent. He is able to walk better then when he was first admitted. He agreed to speech therapy for the first time and tried to use the tools they gave him. It was the first time I had seen him smile and joke with the staff. I felt comfortable he was receiving three meals a day and was encouraged to eat in the main dining area. Not only did the staff take care of him but also was very aware of the well being of my mother in law who had been the main care giver. I would strongly recommend this facility to anyone. I visited several times during his stay and at different times during the day. Way to go Walker Staff! I can't say how wonderful you were and will be always grateful for the care he received there.

The facility itself (i.e. the building) is fine, and in fact the building is much nicer than some other long-term care buildings I have seen. However, I couldn't help but feel that the administration cares first and foremost about running a business, and doesn't truly care for the well-being of the residents. My personal experience is that, while my father was there before I could move him to a better place, the administrators at Walker-Methodist were much more interested in learning about his assets and the value of his house than in learning about him as a person. I urge you to show up unannounced and walk through the long-term care (i.e. nursing home) floors of the building, and I am fairly certain you will become shocked and frightened by what you see. Patients seem to be ignored and left without any engaging stimulation. In addition, I happened to overhear two staff workers in an elevator as they casually discussed a patient who had died--they talked about the deceased person as you would expect someone to talk about a dead goldfish or guppy. Cold, cold, cold. The administrators were, in my experience, all phoney people who I would not trust with the care of a loved one. This is all just my personal feelings and observations, so I urge you to go and see for yourself before you allow a loved one to end up at this particular place.

I am/was a resident of this facility

The staff at Walker Methodist Place has been very good. Mom has lived there for eleven years, and it has been a very good place for her for the most part. She started to need more care, and we have to add services such as the in-home caregivers we hire for her. For people who are really independent; it is a really good option. The staff are really good. The nursing staff has been great. The food is restaurant quality. Mom used to participate in Bridge, and Scrabble. They bring in people to do concerts. They do exercise classes. They have sing-alongs, Bible studies, and a lot of other things.

My Mother was in the memory care unit. While she was there, her dentures were lost. I have left messages with the nursing manager, social worker, and administrator. None will even return my calls. I guess that they are not responsible for anything except collecting the money

My Mom was there for short term rehab. Terribly gloomy, dark, smells of cigarrette smoke, generally looks dirty, dirty glasses, broken unsafe wheelchair, waited over an hr to have someone welcome her-just left her sitting in the broken wheelchair (brakes not working!) in her room the whole time waiting for check in. Elevators and furniture falling apart. Divider curtains ripped, dragging so they are trip hazards. Not updated since probably the 1980's. Never would have agreed to let her go there if I had known how awful it is. Hated to leave her there!!! 2 stars are only for a couple people on staff that were competent and kind.

My mother was in Walker Methodist for her rehab. I have a friend who works there, so I looked at their memory care. It is a very old building, and it is kind of depressing. I know the staff is wonderful, but I just figured that she needed to be in a bright and sunny place.

I visited Walker Methodist right down the street. There's no nursing home around that doesn't need improvements. Food would do for a nursing home.

Overall the facility is nice. It is kept up well and things always looked very clean. I never heard any complaints on bugs or the conditions. The staff was always friendly and helpful however many do not speak English as their first language and my grandmother stated always having trouble understanding likely due to the language barrier and also to her and the other residents depleting hearing. They have always been very flexible with my family regarding changes to my grandmother's needs and if she is a little late returning home for the evening after visits. Overall, my grandmother and my family are very happy with the continued experience we've had with Walker Methodist. When you hear lot's of stories about the poor treatment of the elderly you can only hope to find a place that lives up to your expectations.

Our grandmother choose this as the place she wanted to live in, after selling her home of 60 years. It was decorated well, there was new carpet and appliances in her apartment, and it was so convenient for her to either have her meals downstairs with her friends or to spend a quiet evening in her apartment. The laundry facility was next door to her apartment as well as the garbage chute. I was impressed with the security of the building, no one was allowed in or out with checking in and this was available 24 hours. The staff was friendly and helpful to her, when required. They definitely keep track of the residents, as when she had not picked up her mail one day, they first called her apartment and when they received no answer, they went into the apartment. This was a lifesaver as she had fallen and broken her hip a few hours earlier and was unable to reach the phone nor cry for help. They saved her life, in my opinion. She was a resident there for 12 years.
