What to Consider About Assisted Living in Miller

Miller is a small city of about 1,500 people, roughly 500 of whom are seniors, located in the east-central region of South Dakota. In spite of its small size, the city has a variety of amenities for seniors to enjoy, including a swimming pool, two city parks and a free campground. Local assisted living facilities may take field trips to summer entertainment in the park programs and the McWhorter House museum, which offers free admission.

In the Miller region, assisted living facilities are officially called assisted living centers, and they provide supportive services for the activities of daily living. These facilities are licensed by the South Dakota Department of Health. Miller has two assisted living facilities, both of which are located on 4th Street.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Miller

  • The Miller area is home to world-class medical facilities, including Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital, in the event of medical emergencies or illness.
  • Miller is a very affordable place to live, which may make it a financially appealing option for budget-conscious seniors. Miller's overall cost of living is 76.8, compared to the state average of 88.3 and the national average of 100.
  • Miller is a relatively safe city with property and violent crime rates that are well below those of the state and nation as a whole, which may provide peace of mind for seniors transitioning to assisted living here. On a 100-point scale on which the nation's violent crime rate is 22.7 and the property crime rate is 35.4, Miller's violent crime rate is 6.5 and property crime is 18.0.
  • Miller residents experience extreme seasonal temperatures with very warm summers and very cold winters. Over the course of the year, temperatures range between 6 degrees and 86 degrees, and the city gets about 35 inches of snowfall. Seniors may want to find an assisted living facility that offers indoor activities when it's unpleasant outside.
