I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I don't know how to begin this but by saying excellent. The service and care that the staff provided for my sister was huge! The staff called me and gave me updates on my sister and gave her so much warmth. The faciality called me during Hurricane Ida with daily updates telling they had Food, Water & Power -- plenty of air conditioning. I never needed to worry. If you need help they are a great people to have along with you. St Catherine's provided hospice there for my sister and made her very comfortable. In her final hours even in the middle of the night they called to inform me that it was getting close to the end. I went and they comforted me as well. I held my big sisters hand to her last breath, I love her so much. It pains me that i lost her. But, she is in a better place. Thank you Colonial Oaks for everything you did for Lori rest in peace "sisterwoman" I love you. from your baby "brotherman"

WORST HORROR STORY

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

This facility should be shut down immediately. My mother was sent here by the social worker at east Jefferson hospital after a fall and hip surgery. I was not even given the opportunity to visit or investigate other options first. My mother’s experience their was the worst experience beyond belief. She was left in a wheel chair all day and was dripping in urine from her chair because the help was more concerned about their cell phone activities and watching tv than patient care. The food was horrible Each day I came twice to bring food. My mother had a serious urine tract infection due to total neglect and the aids there would forget to give her the medications prescribed to treat the urinary tract infections. They woke her up at 6 am and forced her to sit at a table all by herself with no newspaper or food until hours later. They screamed at her and argued with her and never treated her with respect. The rooms do not have telephones. Not once in over 40 days was I consulted on her progress or her condition. The aide there was insisting that ,y mother remain and never even come home. It was the worst smelly filthy place and it should be shut down. They stole my mother’s clothes and when you report it nothing is done. Do not ever go there you will be sickened by the odors. I saw my mother’s records and they had on her records that she was black and my mother is white . I reported it and they ignored it. They do not answer their phones and the management never returns calls. It is a horror and I am still trying to figure out how to have this horrible place shut down. The staff was horrible . The staff turns off all of the lights at7pm and expect the people to go to sleep so they will be bothered. I complained that my mother’s clothes were being stolen and was totally ignored by the social worker there who is very rude and mean spirited. The social worker mocked me constantly and insulted my mother and I to our faces. This facility should be shut down immediately. It deserves a zero star rating . They forced my mother to wear diapers and would mishandle her roughly and talk around her like she was not even present in the room like she did not even exist as a person . The social worker told ,e that I was not allowed to use the toilet in my mother’s room when I was visiting so I had to walk down the hall at least 200 feet away and get a key and wait in line to use a public toilet there that was never flushed and the toilet seat was always up and smelled like strong urine. The head administrator never even introduced himself to me once nor did he ever visit my mom one time to oversee the horror that is ongoing there. When you press the red button for help to get to the bathroom ; you are ignored for at least an hour and told that your aid was on break or at lunch. When you go in the hall she is standing around gossiping with other employees and mocking me and rudely imitating the way I walk or talk. When you call to get information about my mom , I am screamed at and told they are doing rounds and are too busy to talk to me. DO NOT ever go there. My mom had two doctors appointments to go to out of the facility for her eyes and they had been given notice to get her transportation and when the date arrived they all acted totally clueless and no one knew anything about the arrangements that I had confirmed over and over the days before. I told them my mom did not eat fried food or red meat so they totally ignore this . I had to bring food twice a day and find my mom over drugged and sitting in a wheel chair dripping with urine and cold because they would not offer her a blanket.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My Mom started out in Skilled Nursing after falling and breaking several things. We were so satisfied with Colonial Oaks that we wanted her to become a resident. She was able to get in and after settling down, not without some anxiety she is now very content. She loves her new friends n the employees. My mom is very sweet n easy going n in return that is how she is treated. She loves playing bingo n getting her hair done every Tuesday. The highlight of her week. We visit often because my mom had 11 children n we feel she did her best with us n that’s how we should treat her. We were very scared at first, that she maybe mistreated or not taken care of like we would take care of her. My mom has a roommate n they get along fine but my mom only stays in her room to sleep. My mom is 86. It’s always clean, there’s a man always sweeping n mopping, they always answer the phone when I call n they have always addressed any issues we had. If my mom has a problem she lets them know and they take care of it. I want to thank Cindy, Clem, Don, Sasha, Renee, Ms Jenny, n Angela many others that I have left out for making my mom feel like she has a family at Colonial Oaks.

My Aunt was in Colonial Oaks only two months. Our entire family was very disappointed in her care. She was having trouble breathing & ask to be taken to the hospital. She was told by a nurse that she wasn’t sick enough to go to the hospital. She called her brother who then called Colonial Oaks & addressed the problem. She was only then taken to the hospital where she was told that she had pneumonia. She stayed in the hospital for (9) days. My Aunt deserves much better care than she was provided. She has recently moved to Sunrise of Metairie. So far things are looking good.

I like it there. I go a few times a year to visit somebody who is 96. The places she was in before were below her needs. She arrived in a wheelchair with a broken hip, and I saw how she was tethered with an alarm that would go off if she tried to rise out of it. The staff person came over at the sound of the alarm, and helped her. Her hip healed over time, so the gadget worked for her. I've never noticed any odors. I like the strong cement block walls, emergency lighting, sign-in sheet for visitors, parking area, her room, the hallways, bookcase, menu postings, activity calendar, visiting tables and chairs, staff and residents. The building looks safe during a hurricane. Being next door to East Jefferson Hospital means they're on a power grid that will be the first to be attended to if the electric lines go down. That's how it works where I live, so I assume same here. She greets the staff in a friendly manner, and they all say hello and even stop and talk to her when they walk past us. She has a few plants in her room, and a window, and a curtain between her bed and her roommate's bed. She reads books in her room. She eats in a communal dining hall, and a staff member sits at the table with her, encouraging her to eat. She would tend to isolate herself without this dining-out-in-the-open opportunity, so I am glad they do that. I like the covered patio social area--lots of shade with a wall mural and potted plants on shelves. If I ever have to live in a facility like this, I hope I get a roommate like her. Her family visits every week and takes her out to eat, so they know more about it than I do. I would recommend more security (e.g., a tricky gadget) on perimeter gates, to make it harder for the residents to open from their side, in case their judgement is in decline.

Colonial Oaks Living Center is fair. Sometimes, there's paper and stuff on the floor, and they're understaffed. My mother cannot do things for herself and we're waiting right now. Sometimes you have to wait 45 minutes to get some help to get her changed. They need to have more assistants. The food is pretty good, and she enjoys it. The dining area is OK. They have Bingo and listen to music and she enjoys that. She had to go to the hospital and Colonial Oaks is right behind it, so it's very close, and that is a big decision factor.

I witnessed nurses handing prescription drugs to residents and walking aways. By law they are suppose to stay with the resident until they take the medication. I complained to the head nurse and she said she just spoke to the nurses the day before. That practice continued. Residents have to wait long periods of time to be changed or assisted to the restroom. The cafeteria doesn't know hot to cook meat it is always overcooked and tough. The general manager doesn't walk around to see what is going on and allows the employees to run the operations. There are a few good, competent employees....just a few.

If you care for your loved one, DO NOT place in Colonial Oaks. The smell is horrendous, and that should be the first clue. My mother was there for about a month, and it was a blessing they would not admit her as a pending Medicaid patient. Although this facility is very close to me, I gladly make the trip across the lake to provide her with a tenfold better environment.

My mother was in skilled nursing for five weeks. We chose Colonial because it was right behind the hopital and came highly recommended. It was horrible. The nurses, only a very few, were sarcastic and acted like you were beneath them. One nurse got mad because my 93 year old mother soiled her bed two nights in a row. She told my mother that all the workers had kids and they were going to get sick. Well, why did she take this job? Was my mother the only person that this happened to? Further, they rarely came in a timely manner when she needed to go to the bathroom. They woke her up at 6 in the morning only to sit at the table for her meals for one hour and then one hour to get her back to her. There is one day aid that is very sarcastic and told my mother she needed to stay there instead of going home with me. Colonial was a disappointment on so many level. The physical therapy, people were great, the hair dresser was great, the event co -ordinator was good. I think most nursing homes are like this. Be careful when choosing one for your family member.

My husband is staying right now at Colonial Oaks. I don’t recommend this place to anyone. They told me that they only have 15 beds, and I don’t think so. They have more than that, and I thought that he would get the attention that he needed, and it takes an act of Congress to get them to do the things that I needed the most for him. The supervisor was nice. There was one time that I got the chance to talk to her because he wasn’t getting any response when he calls. The bathroom is spacious, but the rooms could be a little larger because they accommodate 2 people.

I visited this facility

I looked at Colonial Oaks for my husband. It is a nursing home/rehab. I didn't get very far, because they were booked. I have since learned that they are the very best place. They have 10-person waiting list. The facility was very clean. The rehab area might be a 3, but everything else seemed to be at least a 4. They have a very bright, helpful staff, and they seemed to be a 5. The rooms seemed nice. They seemed to have nice furniture. It was much more cheerful. It had a more homey atmosphere, but not like old home atmosphere. The facility is in a good location. It is very visitor-friendly.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I know my mother-in-law has fallen twice when they tried to get her up to go to the bathroom, and they sent her over to the hospital and had her checked over there. And another time, she tried to get up -- she shouldn't be getting up because she has fallen and hit her head a couple of times -- and they sent her to the hospital. She got upset with the people because they were trying to manhandle her, put her back in her chair or something, and she hit one and punched one, so they sent her to the mental hospital for a week. I don't know if that is normal with somebody with dementia or not. She is in a room with two other people. As far as I know, yes, I would recommend it. The only thing that I have found -- which I guess most of them are like that anywhere -- is that when she would buzz them to come help her to the bathroom, they are very slow to get to her, and that's really the only complaint that I would have about Colonial Oaks.

I visited this facility

I visit this facility a number of times through the year to bring or pickup a relative volunteer who has worked there for a number of years. My experience with this facility is favorable. My relative loves working with the patients, and visiting them. There are always a fair share of them enjoying the cool weather in the courtyard on grounds, and the staff is always more than willing to be helpful and efficient in facilitating requests. The staff organizes events and activities for the patients, and sees to their nourishment and comfort. As with all nursing homes there's a particular scent that may cause one to wrinkle their noses, but it's otherwise easily overlooked when it comes to the stellar care of the facilities and patients. The living center is also across the street from the major hospital of that area, so patients' relatives are rest assured that should anything happen their elderly relatives will be well cared for.
