I visited this facility

Sunrise of Mercer Island was a fabulous place. It would be my number one pick. Kim, our tour guide, was fabulous. She did a brilliant job. This facility is established. It's been there for a score or more, but very well maintained. So, they're well-settled and it's clear that they're taking care of their facility very nicely. The staff was wonderful and the residents were incredible. They were very, very friendly and welcoming. They had a lovely studio room, and then they had 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments as well. They had lots of activities and they were very well organized with lots of things going on, so that was very cool. They also had a lovely outdoor space.

Provider Response

Hi Michael, Thank you for the wonderful things you said about Sunrise and the physical space. Our residents are part of the Sunrise family and we take enormous pride in having the privilege to take care of them.

We went to Sunrise of Mercer Island. They're very professional. It's very nice and almost brand new. The price is reasonable enough, but the other place is more reasonable for us. If we can afford it, I would like to go to Sunrise of Mercer Island. However, once you run out of money, you have to leave and look for another place. It's close to us because we live on Mercer Island and I can visit my sister there. We weren't able to see the memory care unit because, at that time, they had cases of COVID. We looked at the assisted living, and the people there were very friendly. It's like a family and I could see that. I have nothing to complain about. The lady who works in the kitchen speaks our language. She even recommended us to see her and she's also very friendly.

I visited this facility

I toured Sunrise of Mercer Island. Everything was very good, very well maintained, clean, smelled nice, and the atmosphere was inviting. It had beautiful views for residents who want to look out the window to see the view of Mercer Island. The rooms are very, very nice in the sense that the residents can decorate and bring their own home furniture from their home to the apartment they rent or the place they get, so that could be nice for certain people. For me, it was a disadvantage because then I would have to buy a special bed for my dad, which I didn't want to go through that process because his bed is not going to fit in the room size that they had, it would have been too big, probably. It would have been more money out of pocket for me to buy some of the things that would be needed to fill the room. The staff was excellent. They were very caring and very thoughtful. I noticed that they were engaging with the memory care residents, so that was a very positive attribute for them because you want these people to be having a social engagement, which is what they need. Other than the dining room, I saw the living area where the TV is on, and there are puzzles and other tables with activities that the residents can participate in or utilize. They had a center desk in the middle that's focused on when people come off an elevator or up the stairs, and that person was there to answer any questions the residents may have like if they lost their way to their room or need help. That's nice that there's a person physically stationed at that site always to help the residents with memory issues. They had a person also who was there for activities, and she was helping those who wanted to participate in flower arrangements, so they were making flower arrangements, which was very cheerful and engaging for some of the residents who wanted to do that. So that was another little area separate from the TV room. They have an open area with chairs and sofas and then it's got windows looking out over the city. Other than watching TV, you can look out the window, so that's very beautiful. They have another little alcove around the corner, which is another section where you can sit and relax. There's a view outside, so you can see the sky, the trees, the city, and the grounds. It's separate from the other area. If you don't want to watch TV, you can have another quiet, secluded area there to do things. They have a table there and so you can do activities if you wanted to. I saw the rooms, and they were very clean and nice. The one I saw that was available had an ensuite bathroom shower thing. The cost is high. There would have been incremental additions of costs that would be added up and be higher than the others, so that would have been more of a cost-prohibitive issue for my dad. I also think that they should have devoted time every day (if the weather prevails) that they should take the memory care, people, down in groups to be outside where they don't have an area that they can be outside from their top floor. They would have to be taken out by their family to be able to go outside to get fresh air. The access outside is the ground floor, and they're up on the top floor, so they can't go down the top floor just willy nilly because they're memory care, and they have to have a person with them to guide them and be there in case they get lost.

My mom will be moving into Sunrise of Mercer Island. It was good and a pretty nice area. It has a great view. The law of nature. The staff was excellent and very thorough. They were doing an exercise class while I was there. When I was leaving, they were coming back from a visit. The rooms looked nice and really spacious.

I am/was a resident of this facility

A pretty location and nice building but their nursing staff needs to be overhauled. Our parent was very close to being diagnosed with sepsis (life threatening/rapid death) while in their care from an undiagnosed UTI (and would have been if we were not there to take them to a doctor). Come on people you know the signs of an UTI (or at least you should). There are other options on Mercer now. We moved our parent out of Sunrise Mercer Island.

I liked Sunrise of Mercer Island. It's a beautiful facility, but we wanted more of a home setting. It's in a beautiful suburbia. Mercer Island is where Paul Allen lives, so it's going to be a nice neighborhood. The apartment was beautiful, clean, and modern, but could use a remodel. It was a little worn, but it was still beautiful. It reminded me of a school dormitory. There were a lot of activities going on. They keep them busy all the time. The staff was friendly, upbeat, and very attentive. The kitchen was homey, but it was old country style.

We looked at Sunrise of Mercer Island. They are mostly memory care and my mom and dad don't need memory care. The staff was great and the lady that we talked to gave us all kinds of information. She was very good and so was the rest of the staff. If you ask them anything, they always offer to help you. It was very nice. The residents all seemed happy. When she told us they were mostly memory care, we didn't look at the rooms. She said that it just wouldn't be appropriate for them, but they were wonderful. I didn't see a lot of the facility but what I saw was very nice. The food looked good. We were there at lunchtime.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

The care at Sunrise of Mercer Island was fantastic. The nurses who came out and evaluated Dad were very attentive. I probably got a phone call from them at least every other day. The people who were taking care of him did a great job. It was a very positive experience for us. I didn't see anything negative about the place. They were all accommodating, quite professional, and made the process very easy.

The people at Sunrise of Mercer Island did not really follow up with us. It seemed clean. The apartment we looked at was a one-bedroom, and it was a little bit dark. I thought the tour was very nice. We just walked in, and the staff was very nice.

Sunrise had a different building style to it. It looked adequate. It was neat and clean. However, they didn't have any facility for dementia patients. The staff was helpful in showing me what they had, but I didn't really deal with the personnel that were handling the patients. So, I don't have a real comment on that. The rooms looked adequate. There were some big enough for a couple. but most of them seemed to be for one person.

I visited this facility

I toured the facility when looking for an Assisted Living Facility that had a good Memory Care center for my Grandmother, who had been recently diagnosed with Stage 1 Alzheimers. I enjoyed that the facility looks like a very large home, and that it is located very close to where I live. However, it felt a bit claustrophobic due to it's lack of size, and that it appeared that most residents were not engaged in anything beyond sitting. While I am confident that it is a great place for those who in Stage 2 or 3 of Alzheimers, it would have been too confining for someone with Stage 1 Alzheimers. However, the staff members I met were friendly and welcoming. The Director who took me on the tour, assured me that there would be a personalized activity calender for my Grandmother so that she would be engaged. The Director did not ask about my Grandmother's interests, though, and I had difficulty seeing how she would be engaged at this facility.
