Vista Pointe Assisted Living

My mom moved into Vista Pointe Assisted Living. It's a small facility with just about 20 residents in that building, and it's run by a nurse who built it. We just had a real good feel for the smaller place. The building is very cute and decorated well. It's got a nice dining room. Everybody so far has been very nice. The staff that I've met has been very nice. My mom is enjoying the meals, which is a nice thing. They have a lot of activities like chair exercises every morning, arts and crafts, and bingo. Their price is a lot higher than most of the other places that we liked.

Vista Pointe Assisted Living was very nice. They had very nice accommodations and options. So, that's definitely in the running. The room looked similar to other places I visited. It just didn't have a kitchen. They weren't able to give us an official tour, just an unofficial tour, but I met two of the staff and they were very nice. They gave us the card of the person that we will need to speak with and when to call back. So, they were very helpful with what they could do. They had a very nice dining area, a hair salon, a workout room, and a spa that you could go into which was nice.

The manager and head nurse changed during the course of our mom's care at VP. The replacements were terrible. The staff seemed to lack understanding and training in dementia care (and this was a Memory Care unit!) When COVID hit ther was virtually no activities for the residents. Staff provided very little meaningful interactions. The care for her when she got COVID was substandard and she became very week when in isolation (we were not allowed to visit) No one was making sure that she ate during that time and she had no appetite and didn't eat. After a week of this, she became weak and unable to stand or bear weight. We called Hospice for help and to allow compassionate visitation. Vista Pointe resisted this and constantly questioned our motivation and desire for comfort care despite our family member's dementia, COVID infection and COPD and loss of mobility. This added tremendous stress to the already difficult situation of our mother dying. She lived only 6 weeks after her infection with COVID and the worst part was inadaquate and unsympathetic care by the med passer (Dineen) and the management. The bedside aides were mostly excellent and caring but staff turnover and chronic shortage were huge problem. One aide revealed that she left her other place because she was required to get vaccinated; Vista Pointe hired her. Another told me she was working a 16 hour shift because they were so short staffed. No mask requirements in early fall 2021 .Med passers often had wrong doses for her comfort meds.(we began asking to see the doses before they were given and witnessed wrong doses as did the very competent Hospice Nurses we engaged in the last 5 weeks of life.) Our family tried to be there as much as possible, 8-12 hours daily, to protect her. The staff was clearly irritated by our presence and our questions. End of life care was awful. They were not happy with our use of Hospice, and our choice of Hospise provider, because Hospice questions the care and tells them what to do. Many in her building died due to complications of Covid. New management never communicated with us and wouldn't meet with us, despite multiple emails and phone calls during the last 6 weeks of our mom's life. Staff nurse never visited her and never communicated with her. Terrible! If you love your family member, NEVER bring them to Vista Pointe. It made the last 2 months of our mother's life much worse then it could have been.

Thought it was great in the beginning. As mom's dementia progressed, care was lacking. Very little activities for residents. Very little meaningful interactions. Poor Covid care. Multiple lockdowns where residents were confined to their rooms and no visitors. Memory care patients don't understand this but are lonely and sad. Heard residents yelled at to return to their rooms if they wandered out. Many staff have no training/compassion for dementia patients. Staff turnover and understaffing were huge issue. Needed more

Facility was beautifully decorated and clean. Services provided to my relative were minimal however. Luckily, not much help was needed. Communication with the owner and staff was terribly difficult to receive. The only staff member who was an actual nurse, and showed knowledge and concern, was let go. When my relative suffered an on facility broken bone, the only response from the owner, after a week’s time, was to place blame on my relative. The facility experience was fine, but certainly not all we hoped it would be.

My aunt has moved into Vista Pointe Assisted Living. It's very nice and homey. They've got personable and very helpful staff. She seems very comfortable there, and I'm very happy with the service. She has a studio, and they have all sorts of things. They have movies, music, they play games, cards, a big variety of things, a beauty salon, and a therapy room. I have to call and make an appointment when I visit. I haven't tried the food, but she said it's OK.
