What to Consider About Assisted Living in Las Vegas

The Division of Health’s Bureau of Health Care Quality and Compliance is responsible for regulating, monitoring and licensing assisted living facilities in Nevada. Its tasks include investigating the legal and financial backgrounds of license applicants and carrying out regular inspections of approved facilities to ensure they continue to uphold standards. The Bureau also has the power to revoke licenses.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Las Vegas

  • Las Vegas has an average cost of living index of 111.6, which is a little above the state figure of 110.5 and the national index of 100. Transportation and housing costs appear to be major factors, although the latter is unlikely to concern seniors in assisted living too much. They may be more interested in the health care index, which, at 92.3, is below the national mark and slightly lower than normal for Nevada.
  • Helping Hands of Vegas Valley is a charity that provides free transportation for Nevada residents aged 60 and older. It can transport seniors throughout Vegas Valley in vehicles suitable for all passengers, including wheelchair users. Rides can be for medical appointments, grocery shopping and general errands. Although frail seniors have priority, the charity welcomes all residents who qualify.
  • The dry, sunny climate in Las Vegas is popular with retirees, particularly those with respiratory conditions that may be affected by humid heat. Rainfall is low — typically 5 inches per year — and temperatures range from an average of 37 degrees Fahrenheit in January to 104 degrees Fahrenheit in July. There are almost 300 days of sunshine, which, along with the absence of hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes, makes the city one of the most popular retirement locations in the Southwest.
  • Property and violent crime in Las Vegas is slightly more common than average for Nevada. However, data shows much of the city’s crime occurs in specific areas, such as The Strip and neighborhoods in and around West Las Vegas. Generally speaking, residential locations further from the tourist hotspots tend to have lower levels of crime. One of the benefits of assisted living communities is that they typically include surveillance and security systems.
  • Las Vegas and neighboring cities are home to many health care facilities offering the full spectrum of medical care. Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center specializes in cardiology, burn care and urology, Summerlin Hospital has a cancer center and rehabilitation unit, and the Valley Hospital Medical Center has neurologists, orthopedic surgeons and stroke specialists.
