My grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease around 15 years ago. Part of the blow to the family was the agony of knowing that she had to go to a nursing home, where we had to relinquish complete control of her situation. We decided on Lake Brook West. I remember visiting the facilities, which always seemed to smell like urine. I'm pretty sure all nursing homes smell like this, but I remember it being very jarring. She never smelled of urine before, so this seemed like more of a punishment. The staff always seemed friendly, but overworked. My grandmother eventually took a turn for the worse and started accusing everyone of stealing her clothes. The staff responded by writing her name on the backs of all her shirts, in giant black block letters, almost like a sports jersey. I'm not sure if it helped calm her at all, but I thought it was a kind, if not quirky touch. As far as assisted living facilities go, we chose this one because it was in the family's budget and it seemed to be the best we could do with what we had to work with.
