I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom has moved into The Oxford Grand Assisted Living & Memory Care. I like them. I had toured that place about a year ago, and it was my favorite, but I went to a different place. The nurse that was here then is still here now. To me, that means quite a bit because the place I had her at, just had a constantly rotating staff and people would quit all the time. That says something pretty good about them if they have the same people that were there over a year ago. They are in constant communication with me. These people call me all the time, and they give me updates on everything, I'm pretty happy so far. I think my mom likes it. In the other place, she was always back in her bed, all day, every day. Here, every time I've been in to see her, she's always out in the room with the other people. That makes me happy, and she seems to be happy. It's situated like the rooms are around the perimeter, then they have like a central area. It's not very big, so they're always close to the staff, which is very nice. Her room looks out onto the garden, I think all the rooms have a window, so her room looks out onto the garden and the bird feeders and everything, which is nice. She just has a studio room with her own bathroom. It's small because memory care is divided into two units. They just all sit around the same table and eat. They have a centralized kitchen area, kind of like a bar, where they can go sit there, too. It's just really kind of cozy. She's only been there a limited amount of time. I know they do outings, but she hasn't been on one yet. It's been below zero here, it's been freezing. They have trails all around it if somebody wants to go out and walk the trails, and they have their own garden. If I want to take her out of memory care, they have a nice central area with a piano, a kitchen, refrigerators, and stuff like that. I'm really happy, I think it's a beautiful spot. They have possibly a storm drain, but it looks like a creek and looks like a natural area just right beside it. We can go out there in the summer when it warms up.

I am concerned about the activity program. Oxford Grand used to offer a variety of fun and stimulating activities for their residents. However, this last month it seems to have fallen by the waste side. My aunt used to love to go to all of the activities but now they seem to only be offering Bingo or watching Nature Documentaries. My aunt loved going to their Happy Hours so she could visit and mingle with her friends. They are no longer serving wine. So, no Happy Hours. I believe this will eventually hurt the moral with the residents as they all seemed to enjoy this time together. I am curious why this has changed and if it is temporary or permanent. I understand things change but my aunt needs this stimulation and if they things don't change soon we may have to look at other options. Cathy

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My parents, now my mom, has been a resident for the past 1.5 years. It has been a terrific home for them. Very caring and thoughtful staff when my father became bedridden and the staff treated him with such dignity. The facility is very clean and aesthetically beautiful. Throughout the entire pandemic they kept the residents safe and entertained. I can't say enough about the activities director, Amanda, and how she is a voice of reason and rallies for the residents. these residents were only kept in rooms when absolutely necessary, not for a year as I have heard of other facilities. Amanda and her staff have kept everyone busy with daily and multiple, fun activities . She has taken them for car rides, have weekly team and solo challenges, like basketball and their own masters competition, which is now going on. The nursing staff are all hands on. It is a comfort to me knowing that my mother is loved, respected and highly cared for. I wish I had as much fun on a daily basis. If I am unable to transport my mother somewhere, a staff member is right there to get her where she needs to be. I am so at peace knowing that my mother is in a wonderful new home when she can't be in her home!!

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother stayed at The Oxford Grand in Kansas City for three months. It was truly lovely. I wish she was still there. The place was wonderful and immaculate. They were so helpful, caring and loving. The meals were good, and they did what they could with the COVID crisis. They tried really hard to make sure that people got together when they're able to before everything locked down for good. Medically, they took good care of them. I just love the community. I was very sad that my mom ended up having to go into a nursing home because she had a medical condition that happened acutely, so she had to leave. For activities, they had movie nights, church worship, exercises, sing-alongs, and "Wine Wednesdays." It was lovely until everything locked down.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Oxford Grande has a welcoming, homelike atmosphere. The food is excellent and the staff treats each resident with care and respect. The memory care section is designed to feel just like a home, with a living/dining room in the center and about a dozen bedrooms that open directly into the large living space. That way, the residents hear normal sounds of preparing dishes for meals, people talking, etc. They can sit in the living room area and watch TV together if they choose. Staff are always close at hand with the living room design. It's just the best. This is my mom's second facility. At this one, she has said more than once that she really likes it here. After returning from a doctor visit or hospitalization, she has said, it's good to be back! It's nice and quiet. If residents want to join in on group activities or the happy hours, they can do that in another part of the building. Quieter, calmer activities are in the large living area. Best of all for me as a caregiver, the nurses have a text line so that I can communicate with them 24/7 and they respond, usually right away. I don't have to leave voicemails and wait for a call back. They've been accommodating with my mom's dietary needs, (which I can't say about the previous facility). The one thing that they could do would be to offer an anti-inflammatory menu as an option (gluten, dairy, sugar free), which would lead to better health for those who choose it. They also don't use chemical-based air fresheners for the most part. The outside is also peaceful. It's not in a high traffic area. To the south off the dining room patio is a watershed that attracts geese. To the west is farmland. To the north is 152, but it's a block away so there's no traffic noise. To the east is an apartment complex. It's right off 435/152 exit or 435/Shoal Creek exit. They do have their fair share of turnover but a large percentage of the staff have been there for the 15 months that my mom has been there. They are quality, experienced staff who look out for my mom's best interests. My mom is not involved in the activities, but I know that they have quite a variety to offer. Parking is excellent. You don't have to walk a long way to get to the door. In the memory care area, you can park almost right at the door and walk in a separate, keypad-protected entrance. That way, when I'm bringing things in for her, it's not a long walk. The private entrance also offers a quiet spot to sit outside. As far as the fee, they were very straightforward with the base fee and an add-on fee for nursing services, and that hasn't changed. I'm very appreciative that we found Oxford Grande.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I guess the question should be, what can't I say about the Oxford Grand. My wife's aunt came here in June of 2018. She knew some of staff from a previous assisted living facility she had been in and they were as excited to see her as she was them. The staff included our family in their activities when ever we where their visiting her. The activities were varied and engaging, meant to keep the residents active and happy. She always had a smile on her face and always treated the staff with respect and they loved her for it. ( That goes a long way in this industry) She went into Hospice at the Oxford in April of 2019 when her cancer was declared terminal. The staff bent over backward to take care of her. It was challenging to watch her deteriorate and I often saw the staff come out of her room with tears in their eyes. I heartily endorse the Oxford Grand. The residents are the #1 priority and it shows. There is some turn over in the staff but that is the nature of the industry. It is not their fault. When that happens I have seen the administration staff helping out in the kitchen while the CNA's take care of the residents. During snow storms, the staff stays at the Oxford to take care of the patients and cover the short staff from others being told to stay home. Respect the staff and they will respect you. Smile at them and treat them as family, because they become part of your larger family. We love the Oxford Grand.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The Oxford Grand at Shoal Creek is very clean. The last senior place my dad was in smelled of urine, but this one does not and they are so very nice. The people are extremely nice as well. They have an activities director Monday through Friday, and just every day they do different little game type things. They have someone that does pedicures and it's wonderful. Right now my dad is in a room by himself and its fine. When he gets a room with someone else, it's going to be kind of small. But they have a really nice living area just right outside his door so they don't really need to spend a lot of time in his room. The staff is thorough, very attentive, and just really nice, so I have no complaints. He seems to like the food as well. He loves the activities, although he usually didn't participate in his last community.
