I visited this facility

Friendship Village Kalamazoo was very nice. They had a lot of amenities. They just were very helpful, and it looked like a nice place. It was a big facility, so the people in memory care, obviously, would be more restricted to what they can do. I have a friend, and her mother lives there. She is in independent living, so she can make use of many of the things there. They have a lot of nice things for people that are able, but the facility in general is very nice. The staff was very helpful and very knowledgeable. It was kept very clean, and the grounds were nice. The staff that I saw when walking around looked very friendly, so I was pleased with that.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I went to Friendship Village. It was a little bit older, but they seemed to have the amenities one would need. However, they were expensive. Parking was difficult when I went to visit. It was hard to find the right facility because they separated memory care as a whole, a separate building from assisted care, which was a whole separate building from independent living. They offer all services, step up and step down, but their independent living was extremely expensive. I looked at assisted living, and they felt like my dad with this feeding tube would not qualify for assisted living because they didn't have trained staff. They said that he probably needed skilled care but he didn't need skilled care. They just couldn't provide him with the services he needed. At least they were honest about it upfront. I do have a friend who lives there, and she seems to like it. She was able to sell her house and buy into their $50,000 plan. They have very nice breakout meeting rooms, and they have a good exercise room, physical therapy. They were able to do drug or medication management, but they weren't able to do the feeding tube. I noticed that they offer a rider van that takes them shopping or can take them around to medical appointments.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Great place! My mother was a resident in independent living abd then in memory care until her passing in 2019. My father resides in their comfortable apartment in independent living. The staff is great, his fellow residents are friendly and interesting. Good is very good. We all are thrilled with FV.

Make certain you get written verification of what is "pitched" to you during your visit. I had a visit cancelled at the last minute and then when I attended the re-scheduled visit, the person I went to see could not be located ANYWHERE either on the office phone or his cell phone. I waited over 15 minutes past my appointment time before I bothered the front desk; then finally and very briefly saw someone after waiting over 30 minutes. She spoke about other facilities in Kalamazoo and sought information from me about them; she took my financial information and said you don't qualify but did not explain exactly why I did not qualify, how much more might be needed. Quickly ushered me away in less than an hour. Extremely upsetting!

I am a friend or relative of a resident

We were very happy with the care that my grandmother received at Friendship Village. She was there for her recovery and the staff are very professional. She didn’t like their food, but I don’t think there was wrong with it. It was pretty basic and they had options for the residents. They had a lot of activities for their residents like they had music people come in and a magician come in. They also had crafts and they did daily exercises, trivia, movie nights, bingo; they actually did a lot of things.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I was surprised how accommodating Friendship Village was. The staff was very helpful, warm, friendly and personal. I like their little kitchen. It's convenient. The food was very good. I was surprised how good it was. The dining area was nice. I think they have two, where the residents need assistance with their eating, and the one that I was in was a regular type dining room. There was a place where they could walk in the woods. I thought that was charming.

I visited this facility

As I walked into Friendship Village I noticed it was very clean and very wall taken care of. There seemed to be plenty of staff, and they were all extremely friendly. As I walked down the hallway to her room, it was neat and didn't have the normal nursing home smell. She was able to have her own room, and it was a decent size with a decent bathroom. The dining area was kept clean and was huge. She always seemed comfortable and always talked about how the staff was taking wonderful care of her.

I visited this facility

The experience with Friendship Village was less than ideal. My grandfather stayed there for a couple months after a series of surgeries. Certain members of the staff were incompetent. The physical therapist pushed my grandfather too quickly and the nurse practitioner heavily overmedicated him. The physical therapist was not responsive to his individual needs and as a result of pushing him too quickly his progress actually slowed down. When the physical therapist was asked about this he blamed my grandfather rather than owning up to his mistake. He was overmedicated to the point of being psychotic. He was delusional and hallucinating, which is completely abnormal behavior for him. I must say the direct care staff was great however. The facilities were adequate but nothing more or less. The amenities of Friendship Village had decent food and good activities for residents. Residents could attend movie nights, live music, exercise, board games, and full television service. Overall, Friendship village has decent amenities, good facilities, and a nice location but the professional staff does not allow me to recommend it to others. They simply were not responsive to my grandfathers needs.
