I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident
My mother was just beginning hospice and nearing the end of her long battle with dementia. It just so happened that she needed to be moved from one of the Irvine Cottages to another. This was an appropriate move for her and we agreed it was in her best interest, but I was still worried about how it would affect her quality of life and well-being. I had learned that change is not handled well by those with dementia.
I had nothing to worry about.
My mother had been a resident of Irvine Cottages for several years. She had been on hospice before and had been taken off because she had improved to the point where it was no longer needed. The care at Irvine Cottages combined with the hospice service enhanced her life and spirit in such a way that her health improved and hospice was no longer needed.
Now she was going back on hospice again. She was beginning to fade away from this life.
When she moved into the Cottage that Tess and Ben managed, she was received as an honored guest. She was welcomed with hugs and warm smiles and excellent care from the very first moment. She laughed and enjoyed the activities they offered. She was embraced by a loving circle of care that came naturally from her caregivers, Tess and Ben. No matter what time I came by she was enjoying an activity or entertainment that they provided. It was as if they had a secret arrangement between my mother and the two of them that kept a smile on my mother’s lips. Laughter often.
They asked me many questions about her likes and dislikes in order to make her life the very best it could be. They catered to her tastes and lifestyle and provided tender care at every hour of the day.
When it was her time to pass from this earth, they gently and lovingly embraced her as she slowly took her last breaths. They worked in tandem with the attentive hospice staff from Care Choices and helped my mother make a peaceful passing. They were respectful and professional in every aspect of their very personal care for my mother. Our family has been left with beautiful memories of her last months, weeks, days and hours because of the calm and supportive care that Tess and Ben provided for my mother.
I am delighted when I read about the Residents under Dr DuPont's care and guidance of her watchful eyes. She has an incredible way of selecting caregivers that really care about their people and trains them all to really understand how to fulfill the needs and wants of the Residents.

I am a friend or relative of resident
It is only with my heart that I can speak for the comfort I have experienced for my mom and I in the Irvine Cottages. Earlier this year, an inspired voice encouraged the longing for me to bring my mom back home from AZ. Since the very first moments upon arrival at Cottage 12, the family of caregivers, Ben, Tess, and Dan, have shown very attentive, comforting, and supportive care for her. Their concern and care so genuine not only for her needs, but for mine as a single daughter walking alone through my mom's life transitions. I am always welcomed there! Communications with owner Jacqueline, nurse Alex, director Linda, and all Cottage Team support staff has always been positive with great respect for my concerns and honored with supportive recommendations or solutions. The philosophy of healthy fresh planned meals, a safe comforting home environment, and supportive enrichment therapies promote a comforting feel to this home and are always modified with the needs of individual residents in mind. I should only Hope to have such great care for myself when needed someday. Thank you all….Especially Ben, Tess, and Dan for Caring for us Both! Trisha

What Sets Irvine Cottages Apart?
There are many choices for a family to consider when looking for assisted living, and especially memory care. Irvine Cottages is a strong supporter of the idea, "Smaller is better." We believe that the intimacy we offer, along with the consistency of staffing in a small environment (no more than six residents maximum), makes Irvine Cottages feel like a familiar place for your loved ones -- just like the home they grew up in. A large or hotel-like facility may overwhelm a person with memory loss and lead to more confusion due to overstimulation. We find older adults with memory loss adapt quickly to the new, loving environment in our Cottages.
In everything we do one question is always on our minds, "How do we make life comfortable, safe and enjoyable for those whose care has been entrusted to us?" Safety, security, appropriate-level cognitive care and a comprehensive activities program all improve the day-to-day lives of our residents. We are the only facility in the State of California to have a comprehensive camera monitoring program in all bedrooms of the facility. Your loved one's safety and your peace of mind are our main concerns.
Currently we have two nurses on staff who visit residents daily. We also have medication technicians, social service directors, maintenance staff, and other professionals who give the best care possible. We have the lowest caregiver staff turnover reported in the area. On average the House Managers have been employed for five years or more. Our caregivers provide compassionate and intelligent care for all.
Boredom in a small board and care can be an issue, but not at the Cottages. We provide: Music Therapy two to three days a week, Art Therapy once a week, daily Karaoke, game time, outings, gardening, massage therapy, and even aromatherapy. Group or individual exercise activities occur at 10:00 am every day, so all of our residents know what to expect.
An older adult with memory loss has a lot to deal with during their transition to a new home, such as experiencing a new environment, meeting new people, or finding the bathroom. Therefore, for the first three days, we offer a "friend," a caregiver assigned to give extra help at night or during the day to ease their settling comfortably into a new environment. The new "friend" will answer questions, provide reassurance, and give additional cues to their new surroundings.
We do our best to group our care for older adults into three levels, from mild memory loss, to moderate, and for those who need a lot of extra care. Every Cottage has programs tailored to meet each population's specific needs and concerns. For example, some Cottages have extra night care, while some have more music therapy. In order to truly know what level of care or which Cottage will be a good fit for your loved one, a tour with one of our Family Service Directors will assist you in making the right choice!
By providing excellent memory care, we decrease your levels of stress and time spent worrying. You will be able to relax because you know your loved ones are in highly-skilled and compassionate hands. You will be able to enjoy quality visits with your family members, rather than doing the myriad of caregiving tasks on your "To Do" list. That's what we're here for - to make your life easier and your caregiving journey smoother from now on!
